  1. I have an update courtesy of Deadline regarding Yellowstone, it seems that Kevin Costner is going to star and direct his own multi-part western called ‘Horizon, which he co wrote with John Baird, for Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line.
Kevin wanted to reduce his time making the Yellowstone show from 50 days to one week so that he can concentrate his efforts making Horizon. Paramount declined Costner’s recent proposal and will now move on to another franchise extension with Matthew McConaughey, who will co-write the new show with Sheridan. How Costner’s role in Yellowstone will end is uncertain, as is whether McConaughey’s show will be set at Yellowstone or elsewhere, but it may be possible that the other main stars could become part of this new show. Apparently Costner was happy to still be involved, but this was causing issues with the series other stars because of his lack of time on set.

  2. I know the next “planned” spin-off is centred on the 4-Sixes. Not saying that 1953 and 1983 can’t happen, but I don’t currently see the dramatic purpose they serve given that the majority of flashbacks of “Young John III” are ~late 1990s. And this is just me expressing an opinion, we don’t really know enough about Dabney Coleman’s character to warrant an entire spin-off and he really is only fleetingly in one episode.

  3. I could have this completely wrong (or speaking slightly out of turn) but wasn’t 1923 pitched as 2 seasons of 8 episodes broadcast in 4-episode blocks? Not complaining, if it’s to the quality of Yellowstone, I’ll be happy. I’m yet to start the series cos my Yellowstone itch is sufficiently scratched atm. I’ll likely get to both the prequels before the second half of season 5 kicks off.

    1. 1923 should be similar to 1883 which ended after 10 episodes, though having said that the 1883 screenplay was self contained enough to allow the shows main characters to play out their story to a satisfactory conclusion, I suspect that 1923 originally had similar creative prospects and the producers used the first series hiatus to test viewer reactions for season 2 which will develop the origins of John Dutton senior post the Korean war. The creative issue for Taylor Sheridan is that his creative success story Yellowstone must remain the franchises main focal point because of its high ratings, if so the prequels must remain supplementary to the contemporary Dutton saga which will probably have at least another two more seasons with Kevin Costner in the main role (assuming his health is okay), for this reason 1923 will become 1953 then 1983, both with limited seasons. Maybe with both Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren on board, a second season renewal was considered too good to miss.
