Better Homes & Gardens: Aug 25

A visit to Featherston House in Ivanhoe plus Sled Dog Racing in tropical Queensland.

This week on Better Homes & Gardens Johanna & pete visit Featherston House in Ivanoe, designed by Australian architect Robin Boyd.

Johanna + Pete – Amazing Homes: Featherston House
The Featherston House is a national treasure. Designed by famous Australian architect Robin Boyd and owned by renowned furniture designer Grant Featherston, it combines inspiration from a warehouse and loft, with “floating” levels and an interior garden. It also features a transparent roof and a large glass wall. Joh and Pete visit the Featherston family’s remarkable home and see how the spectacular 2018 update – the “granny flat” for Mary Featherston – with the aim of keeping three generations of the family under one roof – echoes the themes from the ‘60s adventure, with a modern-day twist.

Dr Harry – Sled Dog Racing – Queensland
Tropical Queensland doesn’t seem like the right place for sled dog racing but tell that to the dozens of dogs and mushers who have gathered at dawn for the Red Mile Muster. With no snow on the ground, mushers race in purpose-built rigs, bikes, scooters or even just run with their dog. While most people may associate the sport with Arctic breeds like Huskies and Malamutes, the sport is open to everyone to enjoy including any dog breed that simply loves to run. Dr Harry meets the participants… and dogs… that make up this exhilarating sport.

Charlie – Peninsula Garden Mornington Walkaround
Charlie often visits homes designed by renowned architects and landscape designers but rarely the home of a renowned architect and landscape designer. For designer Steve Taylor not only is this his living space but also his creative refuge. The house has a green heart with a stunning spiral staircase built around a massive, recycled timber beam from Sydney’s Darling Harbour! While the garden is well suited to Australian conditions; filled with tough, drought and salt tolerant plants, it’s also remarkably soft and romantic.

Adam + Juliet – Classy Storage & Organisation
Home entryways often get cluttered with all sorts of stuff from your adventures outside. So, Juliet and Adam combine forces to build clever storage and organisation for a family’s home entry area. But to come up with a solution for everyone, they’ll need to think outside the box – or just the entryway – for solutions that will fit neatly into the home. By installing floor to ceiling storage with a design element through the centre, they’ll elevate this home entry from purely practical to a stylish space the family can be proud of.

Fast Ed – Better Basics: Simple Vegetable Soup
While we’re getting to the end of Winter, it’s still time to indulge in the last of the warming comfort foods and Fast Ed has you sorted with a simple vegetable soup. It’s full of fresh vegies and is lighter than heavy creamy soups, but it doesn’t lack flavour. Ed teaches you how to use those vegies you still have sitting in the crisper that may normally go to waste and along with a few staples from the pantry to hit the spot. This is an easy but delicious midweek meal.

Fast Ed – Better Basics: Creamy Fish Pie
For a bit of indulgence and comfort the humble fish pie is a great option and Fast Ed will show you how to master it! Get that creamy sauce texture without overcooking the fish and vegies, topped off with a beautiful pattern of crispy pastry goodness and this will have you longing for more cold winter nights!

Graham – Long Lasting Winter Colour & Much More
It’s been a long cold winter but it’s also the perfect chance to check out some long-lasting winter colour and Graham is keen to show you some of his favourites. Between Camelias Begonias and even some garden art, this place will be colourful all through winter and beyond. Established gardens provide so much inspiration and are in fact good calendar reminders of a few projects that need doing this weekend.
