Returning: Neighbours gets new timeslot on 10

Updated: Ramsay Street's "new chapter" is returning to 10's primary channel on Sept. 18 as part of a bigger soapie shuffle.

EXCLUSIVE:

TV Tonight can reveal Neighbours is getting a brand new timeslot when it returns to Channel 10.

The soap’s very own “New Chapter” will screen Monday to Thursdays at 4:30pm on 10 from Monday September 18, followed by a 6:30pm replay on 10 Peach.

The new slot should help lift numbers for 10 News First.

Aside from the 2022 finale, this will mark the first time since 2010 the show has had a home on 10’s primary channel.

It will also be available on 10 Play.

Prime Video in Australia and New Zealand will also screen seven days later, on September 25.

The new slot will see The Bold And The Beautiful move to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday on 10. On Fridays, however, it will air at 4:30pm.

  1. Clearly I would never be a programmer as this decision makes no sense to me. Neighbours is a prime time offering that should be given a guaranteed to win timeslot. People have been screaming for some kind of alternative to the wall to wall news offerings in the 6.00pm to 7.00pm timeslot and if it was shown at 6.00pm it would almost certainly overwhelm the Seven and Nine news broadcasts. At the very least put it at 7.00pm as a lead in to their reality shows (I note the Home and Away conflict but drama against drama is not a problem.)
4.30pm is really a dumping ground and suggests they are embarrassed by it.

  2. What an Emperor’s New Clothes/ Barbie style beatup –

for a show only good enough to air on the lowest rating major commercial network in 2023 at 430 pm.

    1. I would watch that….I currently watch 7 afternoon news @ 4PM…..but I like when things are in a block and I do not have to touch the remote 👌

    2. Sounds perfect. P*ssed that the Bold is being shunted out of its perfect timeslot again. Didn’t work last time they tried that. Rather 5 than 4.

  3. Given how poorly the 6 to 6.30 component of 10 News does, I thought they might have given Neighbours a run at 6pm – I don’t see that it could have done much worse!

  4. For those calling for a 6PM slot….do you really think it would stand up against 7 and 9 news….both well established…I certainly do not.

    1. Well, no. Of course it would get thrashed by the 6pn news broadcasts. But it would at least be an alternative to news in the timeslot and would it really do any worse than that 6pm to 6.30pm portion of the news on 10 currently does?

  5. Whilst surprising, considering the current performance of 6-730, I actually think a good move. This will make a strong hour of soap operas in a time slot which has opportunity for neighbours to grow.

Putting it at 6 or 630, might be good in terms of tens numbers, but would simply fall terribly against the competition – it would be destined to fail.
Also having the repeat on the multi channel, will help with overall network share too. So smart business move.

With four eps a week, albeit it, disappointing, financially makes sense. Assuming it runs for 52 weeks a year, a cost saving is huge on that and allows for higher production – better location shoots, guest stars such as Guy Pearce and Misha Barton, some better camera shots (some drone footage in preview looks like an improvement/ hopefully not stock footage), hopefully some good music in post production etc.

Would rather have it back four days a week than not at all…

  6. What’s wrong with just 6 pm on 10? How do they not see this? 10 deserves to be the #4 network half the year. They finally have a show with a bit of buzz and they make this decision. 10 might have had better ratings at 6 (almost a guarantee) to lead into primetime. I grew up watching Ten and the network has no identity, no direction and barely any audience.

  7. Surely the first week at least they will air in primetime?
Could have kickstarted with a 90 min ep at 7:30pm and the rest of the week at the same time then move it???

  8. I’m not sure Neighbours has the same kind of following at the Bold and the Beautiful. A lot of grans or mums watch this after getting home from the school run. Might cause a rukus if the show moves up half an hour. Though there is 10Play where you can stream the show whenever you want.

Getting Neighbours back on the main channel will give it greater exposure and a new lease of life.

    1. Friday episodes have always been the lowest rating episode of the week as the younger audience generally goes out to restaurants, bars and clubs.

  9. I agree with Ryan that the time slot is ridiculous and it’s not going to get any new viewers at the 4.30 pm and I also agree with a few people in here that why they are still doing the 4 episodes a week instead of five episodes.

  10. It’s pretty much back at 6.30pm on peach as 4.30pm isn’t really a prime time slot. You’d think 10 look more at 6pm-7.30pm where they could make some changes for the better.

  11. Neighbours is G rated so they making use of that to target the old audience in it’s old slot, and target school children, along with the Bold And The Beautiful, from 4-5pm, as a lead-in to their extended news. It was school and university students who made it a hit on the BBC. Seven and Nine have dominated 6-7pm with their newses. The ABC moved their news back to 7pm after the failure of the National and Ten started The Project after their failure to challenge them. Neighbours serves a counter programming to news and hopefully then feeds viewers into Ten’s 7pm shows.

    1. Maybe they wanted to keep it at 6.30pm on 10Peach and having it at 6pm on 10 and then 6.30pm on 10Peach didn’t seem that suitable. I think having a soapie hour 4-5pm makes sense. It would lead into the News. Probably the 90 minute news bulletin is working well.

  12. Back in 2000s, they used to have neighbours in 630pm timeslot on 10, but why would you have to air neighbours at 4:30pm? I think it’s too early as Many people are coming home from work.

    1. There will still be the 6.30pm replay on 10Peach. Making a soapie hour leading into the news, makes sense. Get the Bold fans watching Neighbours as well one after the other.

      1. Neighbours moving to 4:30pm would mean that the soap show will have to go up against 7 & 9 Arvo News. Nevertheless, it’s a good way to have the soap back on main channel. At least Neighbours is an alternate from watching Arvo News.

        1. I find the afternoon news to be a “teaser” to the 6pm bulletins these days. It’s always to find out more about this story watch us at 6pm tonight. Not the product it once was sadly.

  13. Interesting choice there. I didn’t expect the 4.30pm slot for the new episodes. I understand the 10Peach replay at 6.30 though.

Bold gets “bumped” to 4pm Monday to Thursdays, and oddly at 4.30pm on Fridays. Not consistent.

    1. I would guess that they wouldn’t want Judge Judy or Everyday Goument going into the News. It makes sense having a soapie hour (30 mins on Friday) just before the news. Otherwise it would be soapie, then Judge Judy or Everyday Gourmet or something else leading into the News. This way they have a soapie 5 nights a week before the news.

  14. How ridiculous when the 6pm slot is causing them so many problems. And airing Bold in one timeslot for four days and then another slot tor one day is also silly

    1. Looks like I will be watching on 10Peach. Like others I thought the 6pm slot on 10 would be ideal or even 5pm with News back to an hour fro 5.30.
I don’t know anyone who watches 10 News in Brisbane anymore. It’s too painful watching Sandra trying to hoodwink us that this is our own special bulletin & not the Sydney version with ‘local stories’ prerecorded and dropped in.

    2. Why is the 6pm slot causing them problems? It seems like a 90 minute news bulletin is working well for them and they don’t want to mess with it. A soapie double 4-5pm Monday to Thursday and then keeping a soapie at 4.30pm on Friday to lead into the news for people who will watch both shows to still have something on at 4.30pm, makes sense. Then lead into the news.

      1. Ten’s 90 minute news bulletin performs appalling no matter how you look at it. The Chase and Hot Seat obliterate it and Seven/Nine News at 6pm do too. They need something at 6pm that can offer an alternative to news and current affairs content on Seven/Nine/ABC primary channels in my opinion. A soap would be the best option. I know they’ve had no luck in the past with game shows but I don’t believe the current status quo is sufficient for them either.

  15. I am glad Neighbours is getting a channel 10 spot but why does it have to stuff Bold and the beautiful up
I understand moving Bold to 4pm but make it like that all week then not just Monday to thursday bet heaps of viewers will miss Friday show of Bold

    1. But keeping a soapie 5 nights a week at 4.30pm makes sense. They can have a soapie hour 4-5pm, Monday to Thursday and then keep a soapie at 4.30pm on Friday to lead into the New with. Otherwise they would go from soapie to something like Everyday Gourment or Judge Judy at 4.30 and not have a popular lead in to the news at 5pm.
