2.465m watch nail-biting AFL Grand Final

Updated: Collingwood victory over Brisbane Lions delivers one of the biggest audiences of the year.

2.465m metro viewers watched Collingwood defeat Brisbane Lions in a nail biting AFL Grand Final.

Only overshadowed by Matildas matches at the FIFA World Cup this year, that number rises to 3.855m in Total TV (with regional and BVOD audience).

There were 1.15m in Melbourne alone, plus 414,000 in Brisbane and 324,000 in Sydney.

There were 443,000 watching on 7Plus a record for an AFL match.

It eclipses 2022’s 2.18m metro when Geelong defeated Sydney Swans.

Played out of primetime, Seven nevertheless won Saturday with a 37.0% share easily overshadowing Nine’s 24.4%.

  1. it would be interesting to know how the half time entertainment rated, but obviously they do not split the 1st half/half time break/2nd half for ratings purposes.

  2. … “It eclipses 2022’s 2.18m metro” … KISS probably made the difference … it was the parents, aunties, uncles, school mates, etc of all those kids tuning in …

    1. To be fair, Border and Free Guy (especially Melbourne) ended up doing well, the latter a first run and both were the top two programs (outside the AFL GF programs) in the lucrative and hard to reach 16-39s demographic. Not sure what else they have available would’ve rated much better, especially in younger viewers (which a lot of dramas and repeats skew older if not very old look at 7Two). Unless they have an ‘event’ like when they showed a cricket match after the GF in 2018 (their first cricket telecast when they got the rights).

      1. Anything would have done well there. My point is they could have strategically exposed some of their shows to bigger or newer audiences and they wasted that opportunity on a Ryan Reynolds movie.

  3. Didn’t watch the AFLGF but Ch 7 should be extremely proud. With Lions reaching the GF, it has helped Brisbane market’s ratings (due to NrL stranglehold.) as well, good to see that AFL GF beamed live on 7+ on all devices. I didn’t see the GF as I was in China but who was the commentators for that match?

    1. Brian Taylor, James Brayshaw, Matthew Richardson and Luke Hodge with Abby Holmes and Patrick Dangerfield on the boundary.
I miss Dennis Cometti more and more with each passing game.

  4. Big stuff. But am surprised it didn’t push 3m metro, given the contest and finish, as well as Queensland’s large turn-out (one of the biggest ever for AFL matching the four from 20 years ago) and we saw the COVID prime time GFs do those figures (even though not as close games – perhaps suggesting James Warburton is correct in an eventual push to prime time permanently) as well as Matildas. Apart from regional, Seven and AFL will be hoping that 7Plus (first proper GF live stream ever) really delivered.

  5. No surprises with the big numbers for the AFL Grand Final. The biggest show of the week.

No surprises that viewers remained on Seven (after the match) and into primetime.

Good to see this Saturday ratings post too
