In Drama, Cliff Curtis stars in Swift Street, while the turbulent marriage of two young Indian lovers is explored in Four Years. There’s also a wealth of international dramas including returning seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, Rogue Heroes, DI Ray and a Free to Air screening of Dopesick.

SBS has secured full broadcast rights of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Excitingly, NITV will upgrade to High Definition by December 5 and in 2024 premieres Eddie’s Lil’ Homies, more Our Law and a doco on the late David Gulpilil, Journey Home: David Gulpilil.

In 2024 Dateline also marks its 40th anniversary.

SBS on Demand will also improve personalisation & recommendations, start introducing FAST channels, launch an audio description feature in 2024 for people who are blind or have low vision and, in an industry first, offer and opt-out of the advertising categories of wagering, alcoholic beverages and quick service restaurants from Q1 2024.

Managing Director James Taylor said, “Our theme this year is: Demand Different. This in an invitation to you, and to our audiences to have high expectations of us and the Australian media sector. To demand world-class content and digital user experience. To demand that businesses act responsibly. To that end I’m delighted to announce two Australian media-industry firsts today. I’ll begin with sustainability in media. According to Nielsen’s latest Sustainability Rankings, SBS ranks number one among media and telco brands when it comes to social and environmental good. I’m proud to announce that SBS is the first Australian broadcaster to have already reached Net Zero on its Direct Emissions. And while there’s more to be done on our indirect emissions, today I can also announce that we have a Net Zero Target date of 2045 – the most ambitious of any Australian broadcaster. We’ll do this in collaboration with our production partners and SBS is also the first Australian network to begin carbon measurement on key TV franchises.

“The second Australian first we are announcing today relates to responsible advertising. SBS On Demand stands alone as being a premium video destination with lower ad loads and world class UX. We already take significant steps to ensure we’re meeting the responsible advertising expectations audiences have of us. For example we enforce age restrictions on SBS On Demand. We also remove certain ad categories from particular programming, especially shows that deal with difficult or sensitive topics, such as Addicted Australia and Asking for it. Today we go further, as we are about to put greater control into the audiences’ hands… In 2024 SBS will introduce a new opt-out feature for SBS On Demand in specific advertising categories, starting with wagering, alcoholic beverages and QSR. This will allow audiences to opt out of ads for gambling or alcoholic beverages meaning the’ll not receive ads in those categories. Audiences have always had complete control of what they watch on SBS On Demand. Now they will have control over the ads they see as well.”

SBS will also screen the Eurovision Song Contest from Malmo, but is still in negotiations around Australia competing.

An SBS spokesperson told TV Tonight, “Eurovision is a cherished part of the SBS family, our intention is for Australia to remain in the competition and we are currently in discussions. We’ll confirm details as soon as we are able.”

…and no sign of Michael Portillo!

  1. If SBS were simply deciding, as they did with Viceland, to assign the bitrate allocated for an MPEG-2 SD channel to an MPEG-4 HD one, that would be the case. But they are reportedly retaining an SD NITV!

It would make no sense to have both SD and HD MPEG-4 versions of the same channel, and if the SD channel is to be MPEG-2, it’s bitrate would have to be unwatchable. (The current NITV bitrate is very low as it is).

  2. For the Slow TV, I wonder if this documentary has zero narration? Because I have seen some Slow TV on SBS on Demand including the likes of The Ghan, Indian Pacific, The Kimberley Cruise last year. At least the Slow TV will contains some citations during the trip. Hopefully, they will have like train and boat journeys as well as trips to various Forgotten wonders of the World.

  3. I’m a bit surprised that “Great Australian Walks with Julia Zemiro” has been renewed. We watched the 1st season & I found that Julia’s commentary rather “grating” at times. Julia certainly didn’t walk that far or very hard, it was rather a lightweight travel show. However, we did like reading all of the historical facts, etc. broadcast about the location of the walk. Not entirely sure we would watch S2.

“Alone Australia” … rubbish it needs to be called Alone New Zealand. Ridiculous that SBS cannot find a location in Australia, even the same location as S1, to film S2.

    1. GAW did very well by SBS standards, so a renewal was expected. From memory these were over 10km, so not sure how long you were expecting. ALone UK also just filmed in Canada….. the show prefers cold.

      1. Many of the walks were over 10km, some well over, but there was no footage to show that Julia actually walked the full length of any of the walks. Julia simply “jumped” from 1 walk highlight or feature to the next … fair enough, 1 objective of the show, I’m sure, was to encourage us to get off our collective backsides. As a result all of the walks were reasonably close to 1 of our major cities. I’m also aware that a show such as this can’t show everything. Nor was I expecting a show such as this for Julia or whomever to walk through the Tasmanian southwest wilderness for example.

      2. Just because other countries have filmed Alone outside of their own countries doesn’t mean SBS should do the same. Australia is the largest island on the planet, there would have to be many thousands of sites around Australia suitable to film “Alone”. To be honest, even the UK would also have hundreds, if not, thousands of sites. I’m guessing that its cheaper for SBS to film Alone in NZ than it is do so in AU.

  4. It won’t be difficult for them, but SBS also need to lobby the federal government to put the Aus women’s soccer league (if there is one) and the FIFA women’s World Cup on the anti-siphoning list. So they can bid for the 2027 WC in South Africa, although 10, 9 & 7 will probably outbid them. It was a joke it went to Optus this year.

  5. Dopesick was outstanding, absolutely deserved acclaim and awards. Interesting Fox (Disney) are licencing to SBS and a streaming-series, wonder if this is the earliest rights were available and if Seven passed on it. Glad FTA viewers can have a chance to see it. Keaton might’ve won the main Emmy and Golden Globe gong and been the cast lead as the prescriber becomes addict small-town doctor, however Dawson was amazing as the lead detective, Sarsgaard excellent as a federal prosecutor (one of my favourite actors), also special mentions to big pharma antagonist Stulberg and pharma rep in the talented young Poulter.

  6. True Colours was a one season story, couldn’t see it continuing. Kin S2 isn’t a surprise as it aired in Ireland back in March before they aired S1. The On Demand ads you can opt out are gambling, alcohol and junk food. The gambling and junk food as are no brainers to block as they are annoying and highly repeated.

  7. Oh please not more Michael Mosely. Wont be watching that. So glad Little J and Big Cuz has been picked up for another series. So glad to see The Good Ship Murder being picked up so quickly in Australia it has just started in the UK. Shayne Ward and Catherine Tyldesley are the leads and are brilliant. The show is in the same style as Death In Paradise. Please can we get new hosts for eurovision love Myff but can’t stand Joel
