SBS and NITV have unveiled a wealth of local and international content for 2024 at a lunchtime Upfront at Sydney Town Hall today. The theme was “Demand Different.”

Amongst the programming highlights, hit series Alone Australia is headed for the South Island of New Zealand, Who Do You Think You Are? profiles Miranda Otto, Wayne Blair and Pat Rafter, while Shaun Micallef is on an Origin Odyssey with fellow comedians.

Melissa Leong, Sam Johnson and Costa Georgiadis go behind the scenes of the public health system in The Hospital: In the Deep End, Ray Martin plans his own funeral in Ray Martin: The Last Goodbye and Julia Zemiro is joined by Susie Youssef and Gina Chick for more Great Australian Walks.

In Drama, Cliff Curtis stars in Swift Street, while the turbulent marriage of two young Indian lovers is explored in Four Years. There’s also a wealth of international dramas including returning seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, Rogue Heroes, DI Ray and a Free to Air screening of Dopesick.

SBS has secured full broadcast rights of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Excitingly, NITV will upgrade to High Definition by December 5 and in 2024 premieres Eddie’s Lil’ Homies, more Our Law and a doco on the late David Gulpilil, Journey Home: David Gulpilil.

In 2024 Dateline also marks its 40th anniversary.

SBS on Demand will also improve personalisation & recommendations, start introducing FAST channels, launch an audio description feature in 2024 for people who are blind or have low vision and, in an industry first, offer and opt-out of the advertising categories of wagering, alcoholic beverages and quick service restaurants from Q1 2024.

Managing Director James Taylor said, “Our theme this year is: Demand Different. This in an invitation to you, and to our audiences to have high expectations of us and the Australian media sector. To demand world-class content and digital user experience. To demand that businesses act responsibly. To that end I’m delighted to announce two Australian media-industry firsts today. I’ll begin with sustainability in media. According to Nielsen’s latest Sustainability Rankings, SBS ranks number one among media and telco brands when it comes to social and environmental good. I’m proud to announce that SBS is the first Australian broadcaster to have already reached Net Zero on its Direct Emissions. And while there’s more to be done on our indirect emissions, today I can also announce that we have a Net Zero Target date of 2045 – the most ambitious of any Australian broadcaster. We’ll do this in collaboration with our production partners and SBS is also the first Australian network to begin carbon measurement on key TV franchises.

“The second Australian first we are announcing today relates to responsible advertising. SBS On Demand stands alone as being a premium video destination with lower ad loads and world class UX. We already take significant steps to ensure we’re meeting the responsible advertising expectations audiences have of us. For example we enforce age restrictions on SBS On Demand. We also remove certain ad categories from particular programming, especially shows that deal with difficult or sensitive topics, such as Addicted Australia and Asking for it. Today we go further, as we are about to put greater control into the audiences’ hands… In 2024 SBS will introduce a new opt-out feature for SBS On Demand in specific advertising categories, starting with wagering, alcoholic beverages and QSR. This will allow audiences to opt out of ads for gambling or alcoholic beverages meaning the’ll not receive ads in those categories. Audiences have always had complete control of what they watch on SBS On Demand. Now they will have control over the ads they see as well.”

SBS will also screen the Eurovision Song Contest from Malmo, but is still in negotiations around Australia competing.

An SBS spokesperson told TV Tonight, “Eurovision is a cherished part of the SBS family, our intention is for Australia to remain in the competition and we are currently in discussions. We’ll confirm details as soon as we are able.”

FIFA World Cup 2026

SBS will remain the home of the World Game with the hybrid national broadcaster today confirming it has secured the exclusive rights to the FIFA World Cup 2026. The deal will see SBS, SBS Viceland and SBS On Demand be the home of the world’s biggest sporting event which will be held in June and July of 2026 and feature 104 matches, after FIFA confirmed it will expand the competition to have 48 different national teams compete in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

In 2024, SBS will deliver coverage of World Athletics, Indoor Volleyball, Badminton, World Table Tennis, International Gymnastics and Figure Skating and a raft of Motorsport events including the jewel in the crown: the Dakar Rally.

SBS’s Director of Indigenous Content, and proud Birri and Guugu Yimidhirr woman, Tanya Denning-Orman, announced the upcoming HD launch on free-to-air channel 34 from 5 December, and SBS will launch channel 36 as NITV available in standard definition.

It comes following what has been a major year – we marked a decade of being available to all Australians as a free-to-air channel and part of the SBS network; we introduced our 12-market broadcast signal; and we continued to elevate First Nations voices for a growing audience of Australians wanting to connect and understand more about 65,000 years of culture, history and knowledge in this country.”

Eddie’s Lil’ Homies

Inspired by former AFL star Eddie Betts’ popular book series, Eddie’s Lil’ Homies is ananimated children’s comedy series that follows eight-year-old Eddie and his two bestfriends Lottie and Tal as they navigate the complex and often fantastical waters of childhood. In 1925 Australia’s Census declared Aboriginal people a ‘dying race’. The Australian Museum commissioned three statues of ‘full blood’ Aboriginal people: a child, a manand a woman, exhibited as nameless objects to be studied. The woman was Nellie Walker, Irene Walker’s great grandmother and director Daniel King’s great, greatgrandmother. Now Irene is on a journey to retrace Nellie’s life and understand her times. But first she must find the other statue’s descendants, tell them of their ancestors’ statues. In this way Irene will honour these ancestors. This is a timely story by one of Australia’s most exciting directors; Ngarigo and Awabakal man Daniel King, documenting his mother’s search. Journey Home: David Gulpilil

David Gulpilil, a Yolŋu man of the Mandhalpuyngu clan, was one of Australia’s mostoutstanding Indigenous actors. Since his 1971 debut in Nicholas Roeg’s film ‘Walkabout’ he mesmerised audiences, appearing in over eighteen films. With a career spanning over 50 years, Gulpilil’s contribution to the Australian film industry is part ofthe history of both the Australian cinema and its representation of Indigenous Australians. This is the story of David Gulpilil’s journey home after his passing in 2021, back to his birthplace, the centrepiece of which is his Bäpurru ceremony in Marayuwu near the Arafura Swamp and the remote community of Ramingining, Eastern Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. This is a rare insight into a powerful ceremony of renewal and regeneration and is told completely from the Yolŋu perspective, from the perspective of his family. This remarkable event, marking Gulpilil’s return to the earth, the completion of his lifecycle, draws a direct line between the contemporary world of international fame and 60,000 years of Indigenous culture. The Green Veil

Garma Festival

NITV will once again deliver comprehensive coverage from the 24th annual Garma Festival, held in Gulkula, North-east Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. Each year, the Yothu Yindi Foundation brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, non-Indigenous Australians and international visitors, incorporating visual art, ancient storytelling, craft, dance and music, as well as economic, education, governance and youth forums.

Dance Rites

The Point is also back following a momentous year, connecting with communities across the nation to understand the issues that matter. In 2024, John Paul Janke and Narelda Jacobs will be joined by key commentators and high-profile personalities each week, discussing the stories you need to know through a unique Indigenous perspective. Throughout the year, our dedicated team of NITV journalists will continue to deliver breaking news from across the country, covering the big stories and exploring the issues that matter most to First Nations communities. Natalie Ahmat and the team of First Nations journalists return to screens six days a week with regular editions of NITV News and our Friday national wrap program Nula.
