SBS unveiled locally-produced Food series, acquired documentaries and hit box office movies for 2024.

More new and returning titles on multichannels were announced at yesterday’s Upfront presentation.

Malcolm X: Justice By Any Means

Mothering Sunday

Joyland

Corsage
This BAFTA-nominated fictional drama chronicles the later years of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Vicky Krieps). On Christmas Eve 1877, Elisabeth turns 40 and is officially deemed an old woman and starts trying to maintain her public image, once idolised for her beauty. Also starring Colin Morgan as George “Bay” Middleton.

The Worst Person in The World
This Norwegian romantic comedy was nominated for countless awards all over the world, including the Oscars, and winner of Best International Independent Film at the BIFAs in 2022. Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World chronicles four years in the life of Julie (Renate Reinsve), a young woman who navigates the troubled waters ofher love life and struggles to find her career path, leading her to take a realistic look at who she really is.

Ali & Ava
Ali & Ava, both lonely for different reasons, meet and sparks fly. Crimes of the Future
From famed director David Cronenberg and nominated for the Cannes Palme d’Or.’ As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.

Petite Maman

Language Lessons
When Adam’s (Mark Duplass, who is also the director) husband surprises him with weekly Spanish lessons, he’s unsure about where or how this new element will fit into his already structured life. However, when tragedy strikes, his Spanish teacher, Cariño (Natalie Morales, who also wrote the screenplay), becomes a lifeline he didn’t know he needed. Adam develops an unexpected and complicated emotional bond with Cariño—but do you really know someone just because you’ve experienced a traumatic moment with them? Bittersweet, honest, and at times darkly funny, Language Lessons is a disarmingly moving exploration of platonic love.

Emily
Emily delves into the imagined life of one of the world’s most famous authors, Emily Brontë. The film stars Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Death on the Nile) as Emily, a rebel and misfit, as she finds her voice and writes the literary classic ‘Wuthering Heights’. Delicious
At the dawn of the French Revolution, a chef who has been sacked by his noble master finds the strength to free himself from his position as a servant and opens the first ever restaurant with the help of a talented young woman. Starring Grégory Gadebois, Isabelle Carré and Benjamin Lavernhe.

Official Competition
When a billionaire entrepreneur impulsively decides to create an iconic movie, he demands the best. Renowned filmmaker Lola Cuevas ( Penélope Cruz) is recruited to mastermind this ambitious endeavour. Completing the all-star team are two actor swith massive talent but even bigger egos: Hollywood heartthrob Félix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) and radical theatre actor Iván Torres (Oscar Martínez). Through a series of increasingly eccentric trials set by Lola, Félix and Iván must confront not only each other, but also their own legacies.

The Lost King
Directed by Stephen Frears (Philomena, Florence Foster Jenkins), starring Sally Hawkins, Steve Coogan, In 2012, having been lost for over 500 years, the remains of King Richard III were discovered beneath a car park in Leicester. The search had been orchestrated by an amateur historian, Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins, nominated for a BAFTA for this role), whose unrelenting research had been met with in comprehension by her friends and family and with scepticism by experts and academics. The Lost King is the life-affirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history.

The Son
Golden Globe nominated drama centring on Peter (Hugh Jackman), whose hectic life with his infant and new partner Beth (Vanessa Kirby) is upended when his ex-wife Kate (Laura Dern) appears with their son Nicholas (Zen McGrath), who is now a teenager.The young man has been missing from school for months and is troubled, distant, and angry. Peter strives to take care of Nicholas as he would have liked his own father to have taken care of him while juggling work, his and Beth’s new son, and the offer of his dream position in Washington. However, by reaching for the past to correct its mistakes, he loses sight of how to hold onto the Nicholas in the present.

  1. Really disappointed with the Jeopardy news (though not at all unexpected). I have no interest in the series post-Trebek. I’d rather watch more classic episodes, if they would air them, even if that means digging further into the vault.

    Looks like I’ll be sticking with The Chase Australia going forward (a series that I had absolutely zero interest in while the intolerable O’Keefe was at the helm).
