Better Homes & Gardens: Nov 10

This week Johanna meets Joost Bakker, a florist-turned-activist who wants to save the world.

This Friday on Better Homes & Gardens, Joh Griggs meets the man behind a Future Food System House, Pete finds a Modern Mediterranea in Miami Beach and Melissa is in the Hunter Valley.

Johanna – Build Better With Joost Bakker
Joost Bakker is the poster boy for zero-waste living. The florist-turned-activist wants to save the world and that includes inspiring us all to build our homes sustainably. Joost is the man behind the world famous and attention-grabbing installations such as the Future Food System House in Fed Square. He takes Joh on a tour of his own home – a place he built himself using reclaimed and eco-friendly materials. But his next building project, his mum’s new home, will take his eco-ideas to the next level. With Joost’s concepts, we don’t have to be anxious about the future, we just have to be proactive.

Adam – Candle Towers
If you’re looking for a simple, yet stylish Christmas gift for your loved ones, you could try Adam’s candle holders. Using only Tasmanian Oak timber and just a few tools, these items will not only light up your life, but your DIY skills too.

Karen – Sushi Baubles
Different cultures like to celebrate through food in their own way and the Japanese have a highly decorated form of sushi called Temari sushi. the basis for sushi is rice, so Karen will show you how to make specialised sushi rice before getting to the fun decorating bit. With fresh fish, vegetables and avocado, these balls will not only taste delicious, but look impressive too.

Pete – Miami Style
The golden rule of real estate is location, location, location, but you still need a nice house to go on that location and Pete may have just found the perfect one. Not only is it right by Miami beach on the sunny Gold Coast, but the Modern Mediterranean design evokes images of holidays in exotic locales. Over three levels this house all about fun and family. Flipping the regular layout, most of the bedrooms sit at ground level, while the living spaces
are on the upper floors to make use of the views of the beach. And with a beautiful pool, you’ll feel like you’re on holiday every day.

Fast Ed – Traditional Christmas Pudding
If you’re the cook in your household, Christmas Day doesn’t mean a day off. But you can make it easier by getting organised in advance and a traditional Christmas pudding is perfect for that. A traditional pudding is all about the fruit, so you can either make your own mix or just keep it simple with a pre-made bag of mixed fruit. Puddings are hardy desserts so you can make it up to a month before Christmas and just serve it up on the day!

Fast Ed – No-Waste Fruit Salad
What’s better than mango fruit salad? More mango of course. Ed will show you how to make perfect summer snack, using the hollowed-out mango as a tasty bowl. And the best part is there’s a super easy method for taking out the mango pit.

Charlie – Don’t Get Bogged
Successful gardening comes down a few factors, but possibly most important is water. Obviously too little is bad, but so is too much. If you have a patch of lawn that rainwater pools into, Charlie has a simple, effective and ancient solution. With Charlie’s help, you’ll learn everything you need to install one at your place and give your garden the opportunity to be its best.

Melissa – Hunter Valley Gardens Walkaround
The Hunter Valley is well-known for its wine region, but the natural beauty of the areas is also a fantastic reason to visit. Situated within that natural beauty is the stunning Hunter Valley Gardens. With dedicated ‘garden rooms’ inspired by styles from around the world and set on over 35 acres, this oasis took over 4 years to construct. As Melissa tours the gardens she experiences the majesty and grandeur of the biggest display garden in the southern hemisphere.

Juliet – Eclectic ‘Up’ Cycle Cabinet
Nothing can quite beat the and craftsmanship of vintage furniture. But as fashions come and go, they often look dated. With just such a chest of drawers, Juliet’s going to give them an update that will keep the classic design but updating it for modern times. Adding a backing board not only creates some functionality but drama as well, while chalk paint gives it an effortlessly sophisticated look, making it the focal point of any room.

Dr Harry – Dip Your Paw In The Water
All dogs can swim, right? I mean they even have ‘doggy paddle’ named after them. But that’s not actually true. Some dogs need to be taught, so Dr Harry’s found a specially designed pool just for this activity. The pool isn’t just to teach dogs to swim though, it’s also used as hydrotherapy for injured dogs to do their rehabilitation in. The centre also has an underwater treadmill which is really helpful to dogs who have had injuries to their knees, amongst other things. So, the next time your best friends needs a bit of help, a bit of hydrotherapy might just do the trick!
