Freed journalist Cheng Lei, who spent three years imprisoned in China, will join SKY News as a presenter.
She will begin hosting duties from SKY’s Melbourne studio in the early hours of Wednesday morning before she takes a break over the Christmas and New Year period.
“If you asked me two months ago (whether) I’d be making a redebut and getting back behind the desk in the studio and doing my old job again, I would have said you were crazy,” she told The Australian.
“I thought I would be back to being a soccer mum and, at best, get a few translation or interpreting gigs if I was lucky.”
Cheng was detained in August 2020 by the Chinese Ministry of State Security in August 2020 after being charged with providing state secrets to foreign organisations. She was released on October 11.
SKY News secured the first interview with Ms. Lei after her three years behind bars.

Every time I have seen Ms. Lei on TV since her release, I’ve been close to tears with how composed and strong she is; by her kindness and dignity despite the horrors she faced for so long. She is a remarkable human being.
Congrats to Sky for doing something good for once…hope she goes well!
