AIDC 2024: Third season for Muster Dogs

It's Kelpies & Border Collies in a third season of hit ABC series.

Hit ABC series Muster Dogs has been renewed for a third season… now set to test Kelpies & Border Collies.

Season 3 will expand to 6 episodes -two more than S1- with 6 puppies (3 Kelpies and 3 Border Collies).

While the series will test Kelpies & Collies it isn’t designed to determine which breed is superior, but rather which best suits the specifics of the farmers personality, stock, and conditions.

Speaking at the Australian International Documentary Conference, Monica O’Brien producer at Ambience Entertainment said, “We’ve only growing the episodes where there’s been a natural and authentic driver to grow the episodes. We haven’t just randomly said, ‘Let’s do 12 episodes!’ Because it needs to remain authentic to the audience, in particular the regional audience. The metro audiences are still coming for the puppies, picking a team that they want to follow for the discovery and the joy that is in the show.

“But the regional people are coming to see the growth of their representation on screen.”

When Season One was impacted by COVID, producers asked farmers to try and shoot footage using their phones while the puppies were growing.

Jo Chichester, Commissioning Editor ABC Factual added, “No one who is in Muster Dogs is an Instagram influencer who wants to be famous. They all care very deeply about the issues the show addresses.

“In Series One only one participant really leaned into filming her dog and that’s because she lives alone in the middle of nowhere with 20 dogs, so she had a bit more time on her hands. And so once the first series had gone to air, the second series participants saw the value of shooting with their phones.”

An airdate for Season 3 is yet to be announced.

Amended.

  1. Fantastic. We aren’t into ‘Reality TV’ as such but we have enjoyed the 1st 2 seasons of Muster Dogs very much.

When I read this, I immediately “Googled” to see if I can find an official press release but alias not. What I did find though, was the casting announcement; now closed, back in July 2023 for the next group of dog trainers:

    ambienceentertainment.com/news-1/2023/7/5/want-to-be-on-muster-dogs

which suggests that filming will start in the 2nd half of 2024, presumably for a 2025 broadcast … sounds about right to me.

My only concern is why a “battle” between Kelpies & Border Collies?

Both breeds make great “muster” dogs but each have different talents and abilities, etc. that tend to say 1 breed is better for cattle & other larger livestock. While the other tends to be better for sheep and similar smaller livestock.

    Seems unnecessary to me.

      1. OK, so perhaps not a “battle” as such, but Kelpies are still better as muster dogs for larger livestock & Border Collies for smaller livestock … which isn’t to say that either can’t do the other. So it would then depend on the test in the final episode. In any event, we’ll be watching S3 whenever it gets a broadcast.

If filming is currently underway, why no announcement of renewal for S3? At least, I can’t find one. A search of TV Tonight doesn’t return a post/article, nor good old Professor Google. Given that this show rates well for the ABC, I would have presumed they would be keen to announce a 3rd season even if they haven’t decided on a broadcast date, etc.

          1. David, I wasn’t trying to suggest that you can, do or otherwise. I’m simply saying that if a show rates well, why not tell the viewing audience that another season is coming even if its not until late 2024 or perhaps even January 2025 or whatever.

Anyway, as you say, it’s up to them to do so.

          2. All good, sometimes they like to make splashy content announces of multiple titles. I suspect it is for 2025 so maybe they want to hold a formal announce until closer.

  2. So glad that this wonderful documentary is heading into a 3rd series. Its a great opportunity for everyone to have a insiders glance of this part of working on the land. As much as I enjoyed the 2nd season did find it harder to become as familiar with the participants as I was with season 1. So having more episodes with next season hopefully we the audience will get to know them better.
