Airdate: The Reckoning

Steve Coogan stars as disgraced UK star Jimmy Savile, who used his celebrity to hide in plain sight.

2023 mini-series The Reckoning which depicts the career and sexual crimes of British media personality Jimmy Savile, will screen on BBC First later this month.

Steve Coogan stars in the lead role while the cast also features Gemma Jones, Mark Stanley and Siobhan Finneran.

This four-part series traces the life of Jimmy Savile, a man who, for decades, became one of the UK’s most influential celebrities, but in death has become one of the most reviled figures of modern history following revelations of extensive and horrific abuse. Savile used his involvement in multiple organisations, such as the BBC, hospitals, prisons, and charities, to legitimise himself, forging friendships in showbusiness, politics, journalism, the Catholic Church and even the Royal family to cement his position.

Using drama’s unique ability to place events in their emotional and historical context, the series explores how Savile used his celebrity and powerful connections to conceal his crimes and exploit institutional failings. Showing how he was able to hide in plain sight to evade justice. The drama aims to highlight the importance of confronting the horrors of the past and talking openly about abuse.

Wednesdays at 8.30pm from March 20 on BBC First / Binge.

  1. Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends did a story on Jimmy Saville many years ago and a follow up story after Jimmy’s guilt was known. It was kind of creepy looking back at some of Jimmy’s responses to Louis’ question when watching the follow up story. This could be fascinating, but very sad at the same time.
