Airdate: Horizon: An American Saga

Chapter 1 of Kevin Costner's epic western film series to screen in September.

Epic western drama Horizon: An American Saga, starring Kevin Costner, will screen on Stan in September.

Chapter 1, a feature film from a cinematic series, covers the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. It recently made its world premiere debut at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, receiving an eleven-minute standing ovation, but mixed reviews.

A labor of love for Costner, who  is also director, producer and co-writer, the film features Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington and Giovanni Ribisi.

Costner said: “I have a giant love for my movies and what they can be. I was interested in the story that I wanted to tell. I put on the hat of being a financier, using my own money, mortgaging my own property, taking that risk to follow my own dream.”

Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Costner, Sienna Miller (Alfie), Sam Worthington (Stan Original Film Transfusion) and Giovanni Ribisi, (Saving Private Ryan) star alongside an impressive ensemble cast which includes Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road), Will Patton (Stan Exclusive series Yellowstone), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy), Danny Huston (The Aviator), Luke Wilson (The Royal Tenenbaums), Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice), Ella Hunt (Lady Chatterley’s Lover), Owen Crow Shoe (The Revenant), Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon), Tim Guinee (Iron Man), Scott Haze (Jurassic World Dominion), Tom Payne (The Walking Dead), Alejandro Edda (American Made) and Jaime Campbell Bower (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones).

Horizon: An American Saga marks the Oscar winner’s return to directing for the first time since his 2003 critically acclaimed hit Open Range and revisits Civil War-era America, the setting for his 1990 blockbuster and directorial debut, Dances with Wolves, which won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Costner co-writes with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures. Costner produces alongside Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard, with Danny Peykoff, Robert Scannell, Armyan Bernstein, Charlie Lyons, Barry Berg and Rod Lake executive producing.

Thursday September 26 on Stan.

  1. What about Chapter 2 as that will have already been released elsewhere by that date in September? The main criticism I have heard of chapter 1 is that it’s all build up for the next film. I was hoping to see this in the cinema.
