Airdate: Loch Ness: They Created A Monster

This doco focuses on the Loch Ness Monster hunters themselves, described as "the unbelievable story, behind the unbelievable story."

Well this looks fascinating…

Next week SBS VICELAND screens a doco special Loch Ness: They Created A Monster.

Rumours and sightings of a dinosaur-like creature have persisted at Loch Ness for decades, and the 1970s was the peak decade of Monster Hunting. No qualifications were required to join the hunt – just a sense of wonder. Anyone could roll up at the banks of Loch Ness, take out their camera, and declare they were joining the hunt for Nessie. But the deeper they looked…the darker it got.

Monster egos, fakes and frustrations, rivalries and ridicule mean that Loch Ness quickly became home to a very different type of beast. As picture after picture were exposed as fakes – or at least dubious – the scene at Loch Ness became fraught. Loch Ness: They Created a Monster is the unbelievable story, behind the unbelievable story. A new take on Loch Ness, it’s affectionate, funny, shocking and wonderous.

10:50pm Wednesday, 26 June on SBS VICELAND.

  1. Looks far more interesting than recent docos about the LNM.

In 1984 at 19 years of age i travelled to Loch Ness after reading Frank Searles book in the school library (all his photos turned out to be fake).

My conclusions were: 1. Its a huge body of water, 2. Its bloody cold, especially camping in a tent, 3. Its a stunningly beautiful place and 4. I was no monster hunter and couldnt wait to go home after a couple of days!
