Renewed: The Back Side of Television, The Last Year of Television.

Biting small screen reviewer Mitch McTaggart is dusting off his VCR for more snark on the archives of Australian television.

EXCLUSIVE:

Exciting news for TV addicts everywhere with more seasons from Mitch McTaggart for his addictive review shows The Back Side of Television and annual special The Last Year of Television.on Binge / Foxtel.

The Back Side of Television looks at a myriad of Australian television from the 1950s to today, exploring “all the ridiculous, depressing and outright shameful moments in the wild history of Australian television.”

It is curated and presented by McTaggart in his acerbic, snarky style which has quickly gained him infamy fame in the industry inluding an AWGIE Award.

I am so ready to get stuck into the third series of The Back Side of Television. Sorry for the delay everyone, I was pretty busy playing Nintendo,” he told TV Tonight.

“I’m once again agonising over what the episodes will be about – each time we trawl through the archives we accidentally find another 100 stories. Theoretically, the show can go forever. And I want the show to go on forever. Get AI to do it. When the earth is engulfed by the sun, the show can still be making jokes about Spotlight.”

The show is tipped to screen in 2025.

The Last Year of Television, a warts-and-all look at the 2024 year in television, is expected for December.

“We’ve also got the go ahead for another Last Year for 2024, and that just fills my heart with both love and rage – it’s only June and there’s a lot to unpack already. I’d better hop to it and watch Gladiators.”

  1. So glad Mitch will be back soon, my only disappointment is that Foxtel/Binge didn’t renew it quickly enough to show it this year. Bring it on!

  2. Potentially controversial opinion: Mitch McTaggart’s work is overrated. From the limited I’ve seen (most of his “Year in Review” special on SBS VICELAND a few years ago), the concept is basically a lame rip-off of what Charlie Brooker was doing in the UK years ago with various “Wipe” programs/specials.

VHS Revue with David M Green on the other hand…now something like it deserves to become a TV show!

    1. I get tired of the ‘I know so much better than them, shame on them for doing that’ attitude he gives throughout an ep. It’s boring for an entire ep if it for me. It doesn’t celebrate tv for me, just showcases someone who rips it apart and without piecing it together

  3. Fantastic news. Makes Binge worth subscribing to. The fact that it could go on forever means that the last person standing as the world implodes will have something decent to watch (and a good last laugh!).

  4. This is excellent news, I just recently re-watched season one and two on Foxtel. The time and effort for the research and obtaining footage, then editing it all together would not be an easy task, let alone the hilarious and insightful commentary.
