Comedy Channel goin’ widescreen, no foolin’

By David Knox on March 15, 2010 / Filed Under Pay TV 28

The Comedy Channel will switch to widescreen on April Fool’s Day, April 1st.

“Mark it in your diaries and rev up your blogs – The Comedy Channel is set to commence 16.9 widscreen transmission from Thursday April 1 at 5.30am. And no, it’s not an April Fools joke. Promise. Unless something goes horribly wrong. Nahhhh, she’ll be appples. Wider apples,” says its website.

This week the channel also gets into the spirit of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, of which it is a Festival Partner.

At 9pm on Thursday the channel screens Australia’s Funniest, a one hour guide to the picks the festival, and at 10pm anarchic Canadian comedian Tom Green selects his festival favourites in Tom Green’s Best Of the Fest.

About damn time. This is way to long in the making. I mean 80% or so of their programming is in widescreen. These channels have made a mockery of the time its taken to get into widescreen. Same with Arena and TV1. Two of the biggest Pay TV channels and still not in widescreen. At least Comedy has joined the party a few years late.

It seems at this point it would have made more economic sense to go to HD, which will eventually happen in the next few years.
The cost difference between upgrading broadcast facilities to 16×9 SD and 16×9 HD is now negligible. And Foxtel (owner of Comedy) already has some equipment and facilities in place. A lot of Comedy’s programming like all the stuff from Comedy Central in the US and US talk shows is now in HD too.
Odd move to not go HD.

@Reubot – I’ll have to check that, last time I looked it was still side black bars, but that could have been the program.

Either way they all should be 16:9, this is 2010 isn’t it?

  11. Reubot March 15, 2010 at 3:56 pm -

Craig, I thought History went widescreen in the past week or two?
(Only going off what others have said though – I don’t have it)

  12. Knowfirst March 15, 2010 at 3:37 pm -

TV1 and Hallmark will be 16:9 in mid year, Arena confirmed for June 1.

I’m still waiting for Arena, TV1, Discovery (not the HD one), History, Hallmark and a few others.

All widescreen content that comes from the US is also available in HD because for some reason over there 16×9 is hd only. It’s time for The HD Comedy Channel.

  19. Craig March 15, 2010 at 10:58 am -

    Yes about time!

As for HD well there is no point for those of us without a HD tunes but I guess it means they will now be able to add a HD version in the future?

again a mention of blogs what they have been reading perhaps and if not the pressure maybe they wouldn’t have given advanced notice. Good news all the same also good they mentioned a specific time.

Finally! Welcome to the widescreen age Comedy.

  24. tomothy March 15, 2010 at 8:47 am -

Hopefully they air all their 16:9 shows in true format then, and not have a 4:3 version still running. When Will and Grace went to 111 Hits, rather than showing it in true 16:9 for the final few seasons, it was played at 14:9 on a widescreen channel.

  25. Neon Kitten March 15, 2010 at 7:47 am -

As someone who last subscribed to Foxtel well over a decade ago, I have to marvel… they weren’t 16:9 already??? Wow. I guess while the source broadcasters for the majority of their material have pretty much all gone HD, Comedy Channel viewers can hope for that to happen sometime in the year 2525.

  26. Dan Ilic March 15, 2010 at 7:10 am -

    Very exciting… about time!

  27. Russell March 15, 2010 at 6:07 am -

Why didn’t they just take the plunge and go HD?
Most of their US content is avail in HD now.

    It’s about freakin’ time.
