Pop-tastic Eurovision ready to wow

Only one week to go before the first semi final of Eurovision 2008: Confluence of Sound.

Readers of this site will remember Ireland is sending a puppet to the contest, Dustin the Turkey (he reckons he’s actually 10% vulture) with his outrageous EV send-up. Here he is once more just to refresh your memory….

At a media conference this week, Dustin said he had his eye on Isis Gee (below), the leggy, blonde entrant for Poland. She’s actually American, but demonstrates a powerful voice.

This year Azerbaijan makes its debut, and damn if they haven’t thrown everything at their song. It’s heaven v hell popera style.

Sweden’s Charlotte Perrilli has a typically Euro pop-tastic song and put in a strong showing at rehearsals.

SBS screens both semi-finals and the big night. Terry Wogan once again returns for the final, and as previously mentioned, Julia Zemiro will welcome Aussie viewers to the telecast. Julia was brilliant when she appeared in Eurobeat The Musical as the Hugnagian hostess Bronya.

This year only the UK, Spain, France, Germany and Serbia (host nation) automatically qualify for the final. All others must battle it out in the semis. The “Big 4” of course, are the biggest financial contributors to the European Broadcasting Union, which conducts the contest.

For 2008 the official Eurovision site is very comprehensive, and once again ABC Perth’s Alistair Birch is on the ground in Serbia, and blogging at his eurotragic site. So far Ireland is winning his site’s poll followed by Malta, Finland, Iceland and Serbia. Well worth a look!

Oh… and yours truly is also writing on EV for the SBS Eurovision blog.
