Bumped: Dexter

TEN moves Dexter back to Sundays, replacing it with NCIS repeats.

dexter61TEN has moved on the low figures for Dexter on Monday nights.

Instead it will move the show to double episodes late on Sundays, where the show was airing last year.

Monday nights it will add repeats of NCIS -its most popular show.

Dexter is out from March 9th and returns Sunday March 15 at 10:40pm. Anyone who has seen Series 2 knows it is a deftly-plotted season.

On Monday the show took 506,000 viewers. Part of the problem is it has already screened on pay television, exacerbated by the lengthy issues related to So You Think You Can Dance on Mondays (ten minutes stretched to forty). It’s also already out on DVD.

Based on these two series, it’s unlikely TEN will commit to the third.

  1. Indeed Craig, people here just forget we are way behind the US when it comes to Cable/Sat TV and some people think everyone deserves to see shows that don’t rate on mainstream networks. Well that’s not the case.

It’s a business and these types of shows do very well on Cable Networks, like Showcase. Where they are also far more appreciated than on Mainstream Television.

  2. @hmmm the US is not much different, look at their FTA network stuff compared to cable which Dexter is on.

At least we now have new quality drama like Satisfaction on Showcase

  3. Prime example of Australian tastes. This is why we’re forced to make utter BS as shows like Dexter and The Sopranos etc etc etc don’t work on network television. This is what spawns crap like Packed To The Rafters.

Unfortunately we’re a sad, dumb little country when it comes to good tv.

  4. I’d agree, Season 2 was quite possibly my favourite, not that any were bad.

With Showcase, cheapish DVD release and illegal downloads I’d say their figures for Dexter are to be expected.

  5. Shame, but i’ve seen season 2 on DVD. Actually bought the DVD’s after a couple of eps on ten in Season 1. Hoped it would work because it’s top television

  6. I know it’s a bummer to have it an hour later on a different night but it’s still on, which is more than can be said for shows like Fringe and Flashpoint which ch9 has pulled. But please ch10 show Burn Notice or Supernatural and not a NCIS re-run!

  7. I absolutely love Dexter, but like many have already seen Season 2 (the DVD came out mid-08) and Season 3 (Internet).

Ten can’t seriously expect a show that has already aired on Showtime and been out on DVD for months to rate well, even one as brilliant as Dexter.

  8. I gotta agree. NCIS is now on three times weekly! Ten have found a show people are willing to watch, and it seems its gonna slide it in where ever it can. Hopefully this doesnt backfire on em, and impact on the ratings for the new episodes.doesnt really matter what they put on a monday night though. Almost all of australia seem to tune into nine and seven for the night

  9. This is a great series so it’s a shame it gets bumped around… But its not really a surprise. The series was made for cable in the US, which attract/target a different audience – they’re not great ratings pullers… theyre not meant to be. They’re no Two and a Half Men. :-S
Look at other US series that were made for cable. Weeds is one of my faves but also pushed around on late night 9 then 9HD.

  10. Noooo I just started watching it this season (will have to rent out the previous one) and I’m really enjoying it and I don’t have showtime!! C’mon I’m sick of NCIS!!

  11. what a shame, i love this show but i guess with it’s ratings you had to expect a change, i’ll still watch on sundays. but an even bigger shame is this opens up a spot for supernatural and all they are doing is putting in NCIS repeats, yuk, i hope the ratings don’t improve too significantly, then maybe they’ll give the slot back to supernatural.

  12. Yes as David said Showtime/Showcase got the right because no FTA wanted it. FTA normally gets first refusal on most shows and sports.

Doesn’t bother me what it clashes with as 24 has lost me and I’ve seen S3 already.

BTW moving Dexter to 10:40 on Sunday is a bad move which will likely see less viewers.

  13. good move on ten’s behalf! its bout time they moved dexter, the show is pretty boring and obviously doesnt have a big enough fan base in aus

  14. god damnit! was enjoying it on monday nights at a reasonable hour! well i will finish watching season 2 on Ten then download from then on. thanks for the update david

  15. More NCIS repeats?!?!?!
I would have seen this as a perfect place to put Supernatural. I don’t get TEN anymore. They’re going to end up over-showing NCIS and people will get sick of it.
