Airdate: Second Chance

Deborah Hutton hosts a special designed to help a family struggling in the financial crisis.

huttonNine has a special aimed at Australian families struggling with the financial crisis.

Airing at 6:30pm Sunday April 26th, Second Chance is hosted by Deborah Hutton who surprises a family on the verge of bankruptcy and offers them ‘a life line.’

Joined by money expert Paul Clitheroe, builder James Bawden and Real Estate Guru John McGrath they offer advice and practical tips on family finances.

Nine has slated the series in the same timeslot as Domestic Blitz was screening, which also surprised families with generosity through makeovers. It has one more episode in the can and maintains the show will return to production later in the year.

Wonder if Nine will revisit the family in this special in six months and see if it turned their lives around at all?

  1. Another on on the VW what was the real cost of that car,
    $33,000 cost sell $22,000 = $11,000
    plus repayments ~ $6,000
Plus insurance and running costs $ 3,000
    plus payout $2,000
so the real cost was probabably double that indicated in the show.
a table showing what the real cost of a new car is including
everything would help people who can’t budget.

  2. “I agree with Toughen up’s and Sue Seivers’ comments.
I was looking forward (as a practitioner in the real world) to see how a couple (and there many of these and singles too! around Australia) would get out of their predicament with practical tips (particularly from Paul Clitheroe). They could have saved paypackets on Deb Hutton and the builder – stuck with Paul and the agent with helpful real-life suggestions that are affordable (again the TV advertising is not what the normal person would do!)
The show was a let down!
The show did not go far enough – I tell people I see across my desk to go without things like Foxtel (a want, not a need), cut up your credit card and pay everything by cash (ensure you spend less than you earn) and I’ve even gone so far as to tell clients to take a second job, repair clothes, buy second hand to save money when desperate measures are required.

I note this morning I could not find a feedback to Channel 9 for this show – they don’t want to hear the reality either! To some people it’s too much of a come-down – too much of “keeping up with the Jones’”

  3. I have just watched the 1st episode on ‘second chance’….All you people on here complaining about the show you really need open your eyes & realise that there’s so many of us here that are in the same situation as the couple on tv, some of us far too embarrassed to admit it maybe, but cmon no-one’s perfect…Were in the same position as this other couple & you know what hurts??? They’ve had someone there to help them through it….Were about to have the bank forclose on us, we have 2 mortgages, both properties on the market, one already sold actually, just the banks wont let us settle…If l’d had Debra Hutton & her crew offer my husband & l the support they gave this other couple, we’d be thrilled as there’s nothing worst than waking up every morning wandering is this the day we lose everything & go Bankrupt????And to all you selfish people…Not everything is the buyer/owners fault,it sure wasn’t a case of we had the money lets spend it…we had to work hard for it….Keep up the great episodes on this series…I say show everybody ‘there not alone’

  4. Interesting show, you were a bit gentle on them. We did not see the true figures of where the money went. We heard about the 120k deposit on an the 370k loan so they probably paid $490k for the house, it sold for $375 with a $50k for free make over, would have sold for $300k 40% less.
What was the value they added to the unfortunate couple $100k?
How much super went into the property?
How much did the banks make in interest and fees?
Why did they pay so much for the house in the 1st place?
There is lots more that could have been covered.
2 stars, Deb and the guys did a good job, I have never seen a relestate agent work so hard before, he was too good to be true.
I would like to see another show, it has potential to really help people with the real problems that are happening out there, a much better concept than domestic blitz.

  5. waste of time. wil be shelved… channel 9 trying to wave their magic wand again.
i was really disappointed in the content.. being irresponsible pays.. just live beyond your means and eventually a tv show will bail you out. what a joke.
i wasnt particularly fond of the hour long info-mercial…
gee, how about everyone who is in debt, spend more money upgrading their home… isnt that how we got into some of this trouble in the first place?
how does this ‘series’ help those in dire straits? how many people where involved to help this couple avoid bankruptcy? reality tv- i dont think so…
i saw a severe lack of the couple ‘digging deep’ to sell off their possessions to better their circumstances. not a very good example to others… it just goes to show how materialistic we are.. shame job channel 9.

  6. I had been looking forward to your show all week, in the hope that you might be able to give my mum some advice, she has three children with chronic illness, she lost her husband last year after battling a long illness, through no fault of his own he had worked hard all his life and still tried to work and support themselves and our family instead of relying on government payments to the stage that they actually lost their home, Now mum has had to go back to work, she has ended up with nothing and has medical bills she can’t jump over, i can’t see anyone putting up their hand to help her, she just battles on, I have never heard her complain, there are weeks they can hardly afford food let alone vw cars. who is going to give her a second chance.

  7. i think this situation is more common than people think. they had the money to begin with with things going well then with husband getting sick and having to take lower paying strainfull job things went bad. seems he did the correct thing of trying to keep employment even moved away to get a job that suits.
they made a problem by not taking a look in the unforseen future and while at the time they could pay for it when shit the fan they could not.
many people do this. a car lone and house is very much what alot of people in aus have and they tryed to keep head above water when things hit the fan.
i guess the mistake is they tryed to hang onto what they had but at the end it got to deep.
remember they lost 120k in the process and tryed to do what every one tells us to do, “go invest money in a house” but when the loss of a job and having to take up a lighter duty job . i would not call buying a moderate price house and car spending big when you have a good job and 120k invested.
i beleive this is so shocking to all to see because it does show what people dont see and what people dont talk about in their lives, you will find this is a very common problem and very confronting so i can see why people wont liek the show or pay out on people who had a bad situation and handled it badly which is very easy to do in a scary situation, it is all about pullign people into line and giving them a reality check,
    good show

  8. Saw it tonight, at least they are on the right track. Some great ideas amongst it. It is so frustrating though to see them showered in 10s of 1000s of dollars worth of improvements when good practical advise is what people are watching it for.

The follow up should be even more interesting, their appreciation of the incredible bail out they got would want to be reflected in how they set themselves up otherwise I think they will lose a lot of ratings along the way. I hope that couple truly appreciate it & apply themselves wholly & soley to living very differently. I hope they do similar shows with 14-24 years olds who have huge phone plans, live at home & are totally non-viable..

  9. I think the show was actually fantastic. It’s about time the network made some job cuts and help those who are in need. This poor woman had 120k of her own money invested in this house. It’s not her fault that her husband had to leave his work due to health issues, and it’s not her fault that she suffers the same issues. Things do happen. Anyway I can’t wait to see other outcomes.

  10. Why did they give away free stuff, sell their car back to lose $11,000K + pack up their belongings to decluter as to stay in a motel whilst tradies galore fix up the home for free. Then they advertise their home in every media and papers possible.( Real world this doesn’t happen). Get to the real world and give people sensible advise – this show was such a huge let down. The bank was on their heels, they had approx ninety days, group collections together, Ebay as much as possible, including the car, buy some paint, use basic ideas (thousands of people would of being looking for answers not fairies). Give Real Advise not Unreal Handouts!
Make do with what you have. Do you want it or do you need it. Stop behaving like a kid in a candy shop.Get another job, one that suits you better. Change your Doctor. Write your shopping list and stick to it. Never buy groceries on an empty stomach. Look after your family unit, don’t worry about what other people have.
I have never heard of any one knocking on someones door to say, “Oh I was just passing by to see what brand you such en such is!”
Show people the basic cold hard truths. I grew up in a family of nine children, always had used clothes etc, but learnt how to cook sew garden renovate save you name it I learnt quickly to do it . Thats what the show should teach.
I am so very disappointed with Second chance!!!!!

  11. Second chance what a load of garbage. What about the people who will never get a first chance.Who will never own their own home ,will never be able to afford a brand new car I feel so sorry for these stupid people who get them selfs in to so much debt when their living the highlife (yeah right). They deserve all they get.I work part time I have numerous health issues ,as many other people do ,I recieve a health card from centerlink, but I work and some daysI feel s**t but i still workhard.I do not spend out of my cash comfort zone ,have no credit cards ,if I dont have the cash as in saving up for ,putting a little away each fortnight .Then I do not get it, Its that simple ,Why should you give these stupid greedy people a second chance when all I want is one,

  12. Second chance I watched this show it just made me mad, there are a lot of people doing it very tough through no fault of there own. These people spent up big and get bailed out. It seems that the message here is spend up big cry out loud enough and get bailed out. Not very fair to those of us doing it tough and be responsible.

  13. Just watched “second Chance” thought it was great. It actually saves people from a situation of bankruptcy. All other makeovers seem more concerned with “outdoing the jones” within their own TV World ranks.
Second Chance gets my vote for smart programming in this economic climate.

  14. pathetic show , utter waste of resources on febble people who could not budget or even take on another job, utterly appalling and degrading to any struggling family holding onto their dignity, of course the usual suspects popped up with their usual dribble, rubish TV.

  15. this sghow is absolutely terrible, the people are so stupid and spend up on home renovations with interest rate’s of upto 27%, stupid, i mean it would be acceptable if they helped them out and got them out of debt, but noooo they had to give them home renovations, absolute sh!t 0/10

  16. terrible tripe, the usual suspects helping two feeble, fumbling, New VW driving idiots who can’t work or even budget, makes a mockery of every single family struggling and keeping their dignity, take this crap off quickly please.

  17. This show sounds like it will help many people facing the same situation as this brave family are – foreclosure on their home. This is not a vomit show this is about a real family in a real predicament that will not only help them but help many others who will just take the time to watch it.
Paul Clitheroe is fantastic and his words of advice no doubt will be worth listening too. Remember there are many people hurting out there and this type of show is needed to help them – maybe that person is you. I know it is me.
    Cheers
    Kathy

  18. I get the feeling this is a one-off show, not a series. But it wouldn’t surprise me if this was Nine’s attempt at a Secret Millionare-ish series to milk the blue-sky-factual-crap-train as much as it can

  20. well if DB doesn’t rate i can’t see this doing much better. but DB was obviously part of a long term plan from 9 so they are going to need to experiment with replacements.
