Nine rewards Scammers

It's pretty disappointing to see that Nine has reportedly given Clare Werbeloff an on-air role for a new show called Scammers.

cwIt’s pretty disappointing to see that Nine has reportedly given Clare Werbeloff an on-air role for a new show called Scammers.

The show is based on a UK format that warns people about scams or confidence tricks. A bit like network programming.

Werbeloff had 15 minutes of infamy after creating a false account of a street violence incident in Kings Cross and it became a YouTube hit.

Never mind that such incidents often involve innocent victims. Instead the media turned its attention to somebody who fabricated the events purely for media gain. And it’s been rewarded. So the best we can do is ignore the show altogether.

The move arguably follows TEN signing ‘MySpace partyboy’ Corey Worthington for 2008’s Big Brother.

But where will this lead to next? Actually committing a crime just to get a role on Funniest Home Videos?

Inmates. Asylum. You know the rest.

  1. @ Reubot: “She didn’t waste police time, as she only gave her report to the media.”

Which the Police acted on and the Police on the case called her in for an Interview, at which time she fessed up about making it up:

“Detectives told The Sun-Herald last night Ms Werbeloff’s account of the shooting of Justin Kallu, 27, was made up.We have interviewed her and she has not witnessed the shooting,” said acting Kings Cross Police crime manager, Detective Inspector Matt McQueen. “She has admitted to making it all up and has not witnessed the shooting.”

So they interviewed her when they could have been following other leads on the case, so there time was wasted chasing this fabrication up.

  2. @Rod.

“….some of you have demonstrated your stupidity comparing her with criminals and bombers, wake up to yourselves.”

Now, I don’t think it’s stupidity we’re speaking. It’s a prime example of how far television, in the present times, is willing to go. It’s mindless on their behalf for making us digest this drivel.

So far over the past 10 years we’ve had reality shows, left right and centre, depicting society as a subject of desperation. A bunch of low class people chucked into a house filled with cameras, being watched for 3 months, since then it’s extended out to other areas like sport, music, food, and kids for crying out loud! And now idiots like this woman, are getting publicity for no reason whatsoever, when there is real talent out there waiting to be known.

  3. Frankly I have no problem if they use her in television – let’s face it – it’s trash TV anyway so may as well have a suitable host.

I say “good on you Claire” for setting up Nine’s crew with your false account of what happened, and letting them run with it. By doing so she has exposed, even just a little bit, how Nine’s news and journalism really lacks a great deal of creditability. Well done.

  4. why do they networks keep doing this, they are saying that if you so something stupid that you will be on tv and makes lots of money, how anyoyed must the guy who got shot be! your right david all we can do is ignore it and im sure most will.

  5. Disappointing is too mild.
    Disgusting.
Take note Channel Nine – I will not be watching and furthermore I will tell others not to watch too.
Instead of giving money to a “attention seeker” why not listen to your viewers and try to bring back the glory days of Nine.

@steve, I doubt if ou felt same way if you knew someone or were involved in the Kings Cross shooting.
This girl (clare) should be charged with wasting police and public time.

  6. Even though I am not a fan of Warbeloff, some of you have demonstrated your stupidity comparing her with criminals and bombers, wake up to yourselves.

  7. Yep, agree and will do David, though how I’m going to spread the word to ignore the program while ignoring the program I’m not entirely sure. Mind you, based on recent events, the public doesn’t seem to need encouragement to ignore new Nine programs.

Shameless. Another case study for the media ethics classes…

  8. Yeah, what comes next? Killers in cars blowing each other up, in a prison yard?

It’s funny how the media reward the fools, and knocks down the people actually work hard to get where they are. I’d be pretty irate if some nobody came in and stole my credibility.

  9. i think you’re being a bit harsh..

‘fabricated the events purely for media gain.’ – it was a saturday night and she saw a news camera. not exactly a calculated deception..

i’m sure many people’s rise to fame as had less than honourable kickstarts (australian idol flings to mind). maybe just give her a bit of a go now?
