Reality check for Nine

The Block premieres to half the figures it once enjoyed in its glory days, while The Boss is Coming to Dinner also lands third.

It’s been plugged as the highest rating series in OzTAM ever, but last night the new series of The Block had to settle for third place, netting 1.13m.

The revived reality series was defeated by new episodes of Border Security on 1.46m and fastracked Glee with 1.23m.

The Block’s 1.1m is just half the average of its first season. While nobody would have expected it to repeat its glory days, Austalia’s fascination with renovations has clearly shifted in the six years it has been off air.

Once again The Gruen Transfer (1.44m) an Spicks and Specks (1.42m) were unstoppable, both winning their timeslots for the ABC.

The Force also returned with 1.4m, helping City Homicide to cross the 1m barrier.

New reality series The Boss is Coming to Dinner was served a cold meal of 788,000, in third place behind new House on 905,000.

The margin between Sunrise and Today is widening -432,000 to 299,000 in Seven’s favour.

Seven won the night.

  1. @ Vinny I am shocked that people still like Border (racism) Security
@ Bobby, I like to see the Renovations as do othwer Aussies
@ gerry. I too enjoyed it, it was the first epsidoe launching the characters and the renos. If the preview is anything to go by, it will heat up!
@ k, I too loved the pie warmer, those blokes are great!

  2. ten should have waited intil today to announce their millions of dollars invested in “The Renovators” which sounds extremely similar to The Block only they live in seperate houses instead of the one Block and there will be eliminations.

great news for city homicide and 7’s drama slate of the 8 commercial aussie dramas at the moment looks like ch7 could finish the week wih the top 3. CH is still getting axable numbers but alteast now if it is axed it can be with some dignity of going out while rating better than so many others.

  3. I think Wednesday is a tough day as there’s so many steady rating shows to compete against. I think if they move it to another day it may rate well. I watched The Boss is Coming to Dinner and quite liked it. It was interesting to see how people are in interviews. Though I’ll probably catch up with the Sunday repeat of The Block on 9 at 3pm (in Perth).

  4. @ Russell…. So the Block was Number #3 in 25-54… they better watch their back, Glee was No.4, and Border Security was Number 5.
Glee was only 3thousand ppl behind them in 25-54 … and it’s not even aimed at the 25-54 demo.

I’m all for twisting demos mate, but yours is a big stretch for a claim of victory.

  5. That would mean The Boss Is Coming To Dinner landed fourth in the 9pm timeslot. Not very good at all.

Why is TEN’s share so low today? They came second in almost every timeslot and won the 9.30pm timeslot.

  6. Yer, I enjoyed Boss also, hopefully it stays there although it’s getting very low numbers compared to Farmers on the same time slot… Unfortunately, Boss has pulled the numbers down for RPA 🙁

  7. PD: The Boss Is Coming To Dinner is based on a British concept. Still, that does not mean it will be saved. Hopefully this will send a clear message to the FTA networks: cooking does not = instant ratings winner

  8. Nine does not programme for Total people wins. They programme to 25-54.

In 25-54, it scored 644,000 and was the night’s #3 show. It also beat Glee and Seven’s factuals, and is so far Nine’s #2 show for the week behind Top Gear.

  9. I actually quite liked The Block 2010 last night, but yeah it just didn’t have the spark that the 03/04 seasons had. I don’t know what it is though, but something’s missing. But I think it will get better as the season goes on, as we get to know the “true” characters of the contestants, and obviously the renovations. Just have to wait and see. 🙂

  10. The Block was dull but The Boss Is Coming To Dinner failed on almost every level as a television show. Somebody thought up a clever title for a show and decided not to develop the idea any further than the title.

  11. The person who said “Let’s do The Block again” should be fired.

Australians are over these renovation shows – surely Nine would have seen this with Homemade in 2009.
