“You. Will. Never. Forget.”

Seriously, who is producing the promos for Rush?

Seriously, who is producing the promos for Rush?

Ads for tonight’s episode go overboard with the hype.

They allude to a plotline that is so wrapped in secrecy they just can’t bring themselves to show you, or even tell you, what it entails.

But apparently once you’ve seen it ….You. Will. Never. Forget.

I’ve seen the episode, and don’t get me wrong, I’m always entertained by Rush. But I forgot this supposed moment in about ten minutes.

Sure, if it actually happened to me I would never forget it.

But the promos give the impression it’s a moment of TV drama that isn’t easily forgotten. Sorry. That’s reserved for finales like Six Feet Under or the closing scenes of last season’s Dexter. The bomb from Number 96 or the death of Molly in A Country Practice. This isn’t even on the radar.

If they keep making out every episode is Gob. Smacking. Telly. then all it really does is Diminish. The. Impact.

Producers of Rush are regular readers of this site. A quiet word with TEN promos might be in order?

  1. Channel Ten’s male/female voiceovers for their drama ads are the main reason I hate watching anything on that station. I will change channels just so I don’t have to listen to them. I would rather be in a locked room with a 1000 screaming babies!

  2. I agree David –
The promo this week was so stupid. It was just plain stupid. I love Rush – if it gets cancelled I’ll probably go insane but they need to start making suitable promos for it. I hope the producers read this – theres nothing worse than misleading a viewer, and that promo did exactly that.

  3. @tony I agree that the Rush promos are bad, as are Channel Ten’s promos for their other dramas, but when it comes to comedy and light entertainment the promos from Ten are above and beyond anything see on the other networks-think Good News Week and TAYG at the start of the year, and the one for the start of this years ratings season featuring all the network personalities

  4. That. Is. So. True. I completely agree with Woody and Trix about the promos being counter-productive and having the opposite effect of what was presumably intended. You’d have to feel let down and ripped off if you tuned in for the earth-shattering moment only to find that it’s really quite mundane.

I am one of those people who was turned away from Rush (and other shows), primarily because the promos jarred with the content and irritated me so much. I watch a lot less on Ten than I used to (TBYG and Burn Notice is all now) and their awful promos have a lot to do with that. I really can’t stand to hear that woman’s voice with it’s ominous tone telling me that (yet again) I’m not going to believe what will happen.

This has bugged me for some time and I wondered whether many others thought the same. Thanks for writing about this David.

  5. Haven’t seen this episode yet, but the promos for Rush this year have all been terrible and completely deceptive. I love the show, but the ads have not shown anything exciting in the episodes, they’ve just picked an irrelevant situation and made some comment that doesn’t even make sense after viewing the episode. The one where Josh is attacked for example, the ads showed nothing of that, when it was an incident that had me gripped. Instead they had ads saying you will never guess who is behind this….well it was the guy the cops had as part of a sting, so why wouldn’t we believe and its a character we don’t know so why do we care. Your ads for Rush suck Ten.

  6. same thing with Merlin. “you won’t believe what happens next”, “will do the unthinkable” and always turned out to be nothing when there were usuallyotherthings that could have been advertised that would have really got my attention. Rush and Offspring could have a lot of their problems solved if they sorted out their promos. The movie trailer spoof promo for rush and the introducing nina promos for offspring were such turnoffs.

  7. @frgn8r,
I agree 100%. Yet some people believe this to be the best of the Aussie dramas. Doesn’t say much for the rest. It’s time for Ten to put Rush down & give us something watchable.

  8. Yep, same with last weeks episode. They made it out to be something serious with what Shannon was going to do, but it was nothing. They took 5 seconds from one scene and made it sound like Shannon was going to destroy the whole team and operation. I dont even bother with the overhyped Rush promos, I’ll just read the synopsis on the EPG or online before I watch to get an idea.

A couple of weeks ago, I did an online survey about tv ratings, and I think it was being run for Seven. Part of the survey needed me to watch numerous promos for TV shows, and one of them was Parenthood. They wanted me to tell them my thoughts on the promo. I serioulsy bagged them for trying to advertse that the show was “Ron Howard’s Parenthood”, when this show has nothing to do with Howard. Since then, I have noticed that they stop saying “Ron Howard’s Parenthood” and now just “Parenthood”, with Howard name shown on screen. I also told them how much I hated that annoying song they play in the background, and it is also played lower now. Co-incidence, or are people starting to take notice of some things?

  9. i think Rush should be shifted to eleven next year, where the show can find its feet without the pressure of ratings. Clearly, after 3 years and 2 different timeslots, the show just isn’t working on ten.

  10. I had a little chuckle when I saw that. 10s(and 7s) promos are famously ott ..every promo for SVU is a good example..”you won’t believe…” etc etc..um,yeah whatever.

  11. @tony – if only…

I really don’t ‘get’ this show… every episode I’ve seen, I could point to another cop show that has done a (eerily) similar story line, but much better.

Rush, to me, is like Cop Show, but with bad sets and awkward dialogue… oh, hang on a minute…

  12. Ten’s promos are notoriously bad. Whoever produces them should be sacked! The whispering male/female voices, the regular claim that this week the hero will be “really tested like never before”, or “this is their greatest challenge yet”. Ho-hum! Get creative people! The promos for “Offspring” were so bad I could never watch it.

  13. David, thanks for making a point of this. It annoys me enormously that a really solid, good drama is treated this way. I wonder if the promo department actually watches the episodes they’re creating promos for – totally misaligned with the style and feel of the show. In my mind they’re actually counter-productive to enticing viewers to tune in. Ten. Lift. Your. Game.

  14. There was one earlier Rush episode that was promoted with the line “you won’t believe what she (Stella) did next”.. and then when I saw the episode it was like… what?? I think it was to mark her return to the squad but the ad made out it was such a dramatic life-changing moment, and it really wasn’t that massive.

And whoever makes the promos for Seven would be guilty of the same as well.

Some of the promos for the last series of The Amazing Race advertised such massive drama but when you see the episode it’s over something about as significant as a paper cut.

  15. i saw this promo while watching Glee last night and could not stop laughing. i mean come on anyone would think it was the number one show on earth the way the promo was going on. stuff like this just confirms to me that aussie TV is crap and needs to pull these massive promos out to get numbers to watch.

  16. I agree the promos for Rush in general have been over the top this season, last week with the man hunt and sealing the Police car so of course they show the police pulling up the wrong car in the promo. It does take away for the impact of the episode.

    I’ll still be watching tonight.

  17. This lays at the door of promos. They always go over board. Just tell us what’s happening in the ep, don’t make it sound so good it’s a let down. Very US based promos for Aussie shows never ever work. KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid.

  18. I saw the promo tonight and my automatic reaction was “It’s probably nothing”. I mean, I know some trailers sometimes arrange clips and make it look like something has happened when it hasn’t to intrigue people but that was way over the top.
