GO! nabs Spartacus: Gods of the Arena

GO! acquires the 6-part prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand, to air in 2011.

GO! has picked up Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, the prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

The 6-part series was greenlit, under tragic circumstances, following Andy Whitfield’s cancer diagnosis.

It follows the character Gannicus, the first gladiator to become Champion of Capua. The role will be played by Australian Dustin Clare.

Repeating their roles are Lucy Lawless as Lucretia and John Hannah as Batiatus.

It will air on GO! in 2011.

  1. Please will someone let me know when Gods of the Arena will be shown on GO in Australia. I think it is a marvellous series and am so scared of missing it. Does Anyone know the date it will come to GO chanel please?

  2. I don’t know why they even bother with the international version of this show. A little extra cash on the side maybe for Starz, but the real show is not the one on local TV.

    And get well soon, Andy.

  3. THis promo looks very good. I for one can not wait untill this pre qual hits our screens here in Australia since the first one which just finished last week was really good.

  4. I refuse to see the current show, unless Nine – Go buy and screen the uncensored version and screen it at an 11.30 pm timeslot on a Friday or Saturday evening.

  5. Let’s be quite clear. For the umpteenth time, GO! did not edit Spartacus,. The program’s prodcuers edited Spartacus for broadcast on FTA networks around the world. The uncut DVD release has just been given an R rating by the Classification Board. In Australian we cannot broadcast R rated material on FTA television.

  6. Doesn’t interest me much but it’s interesting to see Dustin Clare in the lead role. He was excellent as the psychopathic Chris Flannery in Underbelly 2.

  7. @Andrew – (for about the sixth time) the version aired by GO! was the “international” version, as supplied by Starz, with the rude bits cut out. Blame Nine/GO! for not purchasing the unedited version but don’t accuse them of making those cuts.

  8. Great news.

Hopefully the prequel won’t be as severely edited (by Starz and/or Channel 9) as “Blood and Sand” was. At least it looks like the Australian DVD and Blu-Ray releases on 1 December 2010 are the “uncut” versions (including material which was cut from the original US broadcast).

It will be interesting to see how far after 21 January 2011 (the US premier date) the prequel screens.
