Negus move to 6:30pm?

TEN could considering moving 6PM with George Negus to take on A Current Affair and Today Tonight.

TEN could considering moving 6PM with George Negus to 6:30pm, to take on A Current Affair and Today Tonight head to head, notes the Weekend Australian.

While the show’s numbers at 6PM are lagging the competition there is some thought that the show’s more serious tone would provide a viable alternative to the offerings from Nine and Seven.

Such a move would also address the low numbers for TEN Evening News -but where the state-based presenters will finish up is unclear. TEN management denies claims Sandra Sully is unhappy in her early evening role.

A recent reader poll on TV Tonight indicated 73% would prefer the show at 6:30pm.

TEN should also consider reinstating its weekend News to 5pm pronto. It is dying at 6pm.

Questions also remain about ONE.

  1. For one, why dont you enter an ownership structure like they have with eleven. If they pared up with espn or sentanta then they could probably have access to decent quality content

  2. Either way it won’t work, it’s the same old news, just because you get George Negus to say it, it doesn’t make any difference. TEN made an awful move with Negus, not every show ends up like Mash or Cheers, I doubt Negus will either, because… how many ways can you report the same minor issues that have been blown up to sound much worse, in a bid for viewership. What was it’s last viewership? 300k? It won’t change much if at all when the shift to 6:30 occurs.

The poll on TVTonight is almost meaningless, the forum posters/visitors are merely a minority, a fraction of the total viewers who switch on their TVs every night.

The issue with TEN is… they already have… 6? 8? 9 hours of news a day… if you cannot make at least One seating of those, thne you’re not trying hard enough, or your life is so hectic, news of Ricky Nixon’s latest sex scandal, or the 10,000,000th report on the “latest” robbery is completely irrelevant to you.

  3. Send George to the ABC or SBS, get rid of News at 5. Run Bold and the Beautiful at 5.00, Neighbours at 5.30. Then have Ten News 6-7 and then 7pm Prpject from 7pm.
    Simple.

  4. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I prefer the news at 6.30 instead of George. For me that is the best time for news (not everyone gets home by 6) and it leads in well to The 7PM Project.

  5. That would be a great move! Let’s finally see what Australian viewers do when given the option of real current affairs versus cameras being shoved in the face of dodgy plumbers and barely disguised infomercials that we’ve been fed by 7 and 9. I’m sure we’ll be disappointed at the number that still choose to watch that rubbish when given an alternative, but I think there are enough intelligent viewers to make this a viable option. And leading straight in to 7pm, with a big common audience between the two shows, should work well.

  6. Currently: First at 5 (only M-F). Tens Evening News 6.30PM (except Sat & Sun 6PM).
Is there any wonder why people are confussed? Should be first at 5 – 7 nights, 6PM News 7 nights and George 6.30 – 5 nights. Why is it soooo difficult?

  7. Moving Negus to 6:30PM would be a very smart move indeed. I never understood the concept of a serious current affairs program being put up against two very strong news bulletins from the other big commercial networks, and I was never ever going to understand why Ten would put its “Evening News” at 6:30 up against the two sensationalist current affairs shows. The way I saw it, they were promising programs put in the wrong timeslots. Negus was never going to pull audiences at 6PM, and Ten Evening News likewise at 6:30. This will be a good change for the network if a move eventuates.

  8. The biggest mistake the show made was calling it 6pm With George Negus! What if they want to change it to 6.30? And what if George isn’t there? Very silly…

I’d love to see the show go up against ACA and TT!!! It may take a little while but I could see it starting to rate rather well. People will get sick and tired of seeing the 78th rehash story on which is better frozen peas or fresh peas or the 89th rehash of the best meats!

  9. Yay. That would be the best thing for George Negus. We’ve been calling out for an alternative the trashy ACA & TT. Ten offer it but put it on at the wrong time. It’s only logical to move it to 6.30 where it can truly compete. And i just hope people choose brains over braindead.

  10. I liked Ten’s weekend news at 5 – it was nice to have a “national” bulletin rather than all the local stuff. I like to hear what’s happening in the country rather than just Radelaide!

  11. Sandra unhappy?

I would have thought that Bill McDonald would be the most upset of the 6:30 readers, because of having to do double duty: i.e 5pm and 6:30.

Ten will most likely drop the separate news and extend 5pm, if it were to swap with Negus.

  12. Would be a good move. I know as a Tasmanian, it is hard to catch local, regional news and the 6PM news on 7/Win is one of the only sources, so i watch that, despite their sensationalism. Would love to watch George.

  13. The problem with locking yourself in with the show name of it’s tim and presenter…will 6pm with George Negus become 630pm with Hugh Riminton? Good work for the graphics oriole and set designers etc.

  14. Yes the weekend should be at 5pm not 6pm

Will they change the name if they more Negus to 6:30?

What more can they do with ONE? Maybe show more ‘encore’ sports events so if viewers miss there sport they can catch it later in the week. Thinks should pick up when the FI gets going in a few weeks. And on that the it looks like the first round in Bahrain has been canceled for obvious reasons, thus Melbourne is now that first race for 2011 on the 27th of March.

Sorry for being a bit off topic.

    Go Negus!

  15. What questions are there for ONE? I watch it all the time even when AFL is in recess. Damn, it needs maybe 1/2 more big sports then it would be a great alternative to Fox SPorts/ESPN/Eurosport. Put it on live where possible and people won’t download, stream or pay for it. This shouldn’t be surprising to any tv exec and especially L&J now running ten (share ownership or not they are “in control”).

Let’s face it, rerun channels will in a year or two become so ho-hum that GO/7TWO/7Mate/11/GEM will be scraping the barrel even further than they do now.

High ratings shows are news, sport and unique formats e.g BB, MC plus the white bread stuff like Rafters and 2.5Men

Leave the channel as is since isn’t the main complaint viewers have is that shows keep moving all over the place.

  16. This is the best decision for the ten network to move forward, I expect the show to be more popular that tt and aca in about a year
    Seriously change it…sooner the better!!
