Paper Giants set to boost Asher Keddie’s Logie run

Asher Keddie and Paper Giants were the toast of Twitter last night, no doubt bolstering her race for the Gold Logie.

Last night’s screening of Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo has no doubt boosted Asher Keddie’s dark horse race for the Gold Logie.

Keddie’s performance and the entire mini-series, were the toast of Twitter last night with both #papergiants and ‘Asher Keddie’ trending nationally.

Tweets were praising her spot-on performance as a young Ita Buttrose along with the ABC production.

Great episode of #papergiants! Ita Buttrose and Kerry Packer played wonderfully. Hopefully some more nude, 1970s male centrefolds tomorrow.

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of the movie i thought that all of the actors were good. Asher was very good as Ita, i could not get around how well she managed to recreate Ita’s voice and that lisp, amazing. Rob Carlton was just great as the legendary Kerry Packer. I think if this is a success on tv and in dvd sales then i think their would be enough to do a Bio film on Kerry Packer i bet that would rate very well.

  2. There’s no doubt in my mind that John Edwards would have pitched this Nine, but of course nothing interesting gets through whatever is Nine’s commissioning process. The ABC deservedly won Sunday night while Nine continues to languish. Congratulations to Asher – that is an amazing portrayal.

  3. I’m a happy little camper this morning. Great ratings, wonderful buzz and so well deserved. This is the sort of drama Australia can make brilliantly – let there be more!

  4. This was the best thing on TV last night and will be again tonight, a great cast, great acting from all.

Hopefully this opens the door to more drama like this, perhaps it could lead to an Australian version of Mad Men, the drama set in 50s or 60s or 70s and not just about a crime family, maybe a political drama or something along the lines of Paper Giants

  5. Great show. Enjoyed it so much, it felt too soon when it ended. Hopefully this means we’ll get more period shows done (especially the glorius 70s).

  6. I thought (after seeing the promos) that this could easily have become a farce with Ita’s lisp but apart from the first “Yeth”, it was a perfectly toned portrayal by Asher Keddie, not just the (very minor) lisp but Ita’s voice, and confidence. Really well done. Other actors were good too but Keddie’s skill in playing Ita was the standout.

  7. I hoped it would be a good show and it has so far exceeded my expectations… Great characters and a really well written screen play. It is the best Australian tv I have seen in a long time.

  8. I normally write in to complain about TV, so it’s a fantastic relief to be able to say something positive!
This show had it all, particularly Asher Keddie, who is a better Ita than Ita ever was – gee she has the lisp down perfectly! The ’70s ‘feel’ of the show is almost perfect too, (the script is lacking a few “groovy, far out man” etc, expressions IMHO – I was there by the way) but otherwise congratulations to Aunty for showing it can still be done.
(Gen Y note well – explosions and gore are not mandatory to create good drama.)

  9. Was absolutely memorised by Asher Keddie’s portrayal of Ita Butrose. She had completely channeled the young Ita. Shut your eys and you’d swear it was Ita – she captured the voice so well yet played down Ita’s much more obvious lisp. Brilliant supporting cast and looking forward to tonight’s conclusion. ABC you need to series link your programs – nearly missed ep two, only found out by checking on imdb whilst looking at the cast list – otherwise really well done!

  10. Wow, it was amazingly good television. Demonstrates Australia can make quality drama that is riveting and clever. Brilliant acting, script and direction. Some anachronisms in the soundtrack and set design but I thought they actually made it more entertaining, pushing the line between drama and docudrama. Outstanding! Asher Keddie gets my Gold Logie vote.

  11. I love Offspring, andhave been a fan of Asher since Love my way, but don’t consider her a chance at all to win the big one. I know that having a show on air will boost her visibility, and possibly the audiences for Paper Giants and Offspring are not dissimilar, but many people consider only 2010 programs, and my sense is that the votes that come in after the noms will boost either Adam Hills or Karl or Chrissie, especially as Asher is a character actor, rather than a more accessible personality who is on air daily or weekly and exudes likeability.
But then again Ian Smith, John Wood and Ray Meagher were for me surprising nominees and in the case of the last two – the actual Gold Logie. You never know.
