Report: TEN redundancies on the way

TEN staff in news, sales, operations and programming will be be handed redundancy notices next week.

TEN staff in news, sales, operations and programming will be be handed redundancy notices next week, following a major strategic review ordered by interim CEO Lachlan Murdoch.

More than 100 jobs are expected to go, including many of the journalists recruited for the network’s overhaul of News under former boss Grant Blackley.

Staff at outdoor advertising division Eye Corp will also be made redundant.

The changes led to News Director Jim Carroll resigning after 10 years, amid reports he wasn’t prepared to sack dozens of journalists who were only just hired.

The Australian today reports another TEN executive, Sydney station manager and head of broadcast control, Darren Farnham, has also resigned.

The network, which has already dropped its local 6:30 news bulletins, is also set to abandon its 6pm weekend bulletin.

The redundancies come at a time when TEN saves costs by not pursuing AFL broadcasts.

Chief programming officer David Mott tells the Australian Financial Review, “the money we save by not having AFL will be redeployed across our entire schedule, not just Saturdays.”

A spokeswoman said the strategic cost review was still underway, but would not comment on the redundancies.

  1. @Knowfirst

What makes you say that? The jobs will start going next week so why would they start repeating stories today? Perhaps it was an expanded piece considering recent events.

I don’t get how everyone still thinks Lachlan Murdoch is working as hard as he is to sabotage the network. He’s not the only big player owning a stake in TEN so i doubt he wants to make more enemies unless the entire board is in on it. Also why poach one of the top blokes at Seven to fix the network with the original intent to have him start work in what would’ve been weeks from now, only to want it go up in flames?

  2. @wei ting: bit harsh on the sales guys. Those “parasites” work bloody hard in a competitive industry, get abused from bosses and clients alike. They don’t need your unfair slander too. And as for the dumbing down of news on 7pm Project, if it means that more people sit up and pay attention to some issues rather than drift through life not giving a damn about anything, then dumb away IMO.

  3. @David@Greenpoint: This is the biggest slash n’ burn I have seen in awhile. He is taking all the value out of Ten and will leave it on life support for the new CEO.

  4. @# cameron- you obviously came down in the last shower and dont remember Jana at the Ollie awards, spouting far and wide about the dumbing down of news media which is exactly what Ch TIN does. ( see 7 PM project for instances) She would Never stoop so low to work there…IMHO

  5. Not surprised – the first story on 6.30 with George tonight on people hacking computers was the exact story shown on Ten News Sydney around 4-6 weeks ago. Same reporter… everything.

  6. Lachlan Murdoch & James Packer took over TEN to protect Foxtel / Fox sports, 1st by TEN not showing AFL from 2012 and 2nd by shafting ONE-HD from just sports to mixed drama, doco’s etc.
Once Murdoch leaves TEN the network will be in debt & losing alot of of money

  7. Ten should keep the local 6pm evening news on the weekends otherwise it won’t show that they are taking news seriously. The network just like 9, ABC and 7 should be able to give viewers local news 7 days a week.

Ten should put in a game show at 6pm weekdays (Wheel of Fortune perhaps) while sticking to 60 minutes of news at 5, 6:30pm with George Negus (when he goes get another great Aussie jornalist such as Jana Wendt) and the 7pm Project. If Ten want an evening news bullitin, put it on at 7pm (including weekends) and move the 7pm Project to 11. 11 should have the Simpsons on at 6pm with doubles on the weekend and it could improve the ratings for 11. The early evening schedule on 11 could be the same as what was on 10 and deliver strong ratings for a digital channel. This is just my opinion btw.

  8. The Nova network has been raped by News Ltd and the Sydney station is now at it’s lowest ratings since launch. These guys know how to strip a media organisation, but wil they know how to rebuild it cost effectively?

  9. So TEN’s massive news overhaul is really just a current affairs competitor in George Negus and an extended broadcast to an unnecessary 90 minutes each evening…

It’s quite an embarrassment to TEN’s planning when such a massive change ends up back where it started… and the poor people losing jobs after just being hired!

  10. Don’t think so Pete… little Lachy is sitting on a potential gold mine with his interests in TEN, Nova Radio & the blossoming digital media revolution.

He’s picked up a lot of his father’s talent in rooting out developing bargains.
