Dani wins second Immunity, but fans question fairness.

Dani Venn won another Immunity pin on MasterChef, but questions are raised about the challenge against swimmer Eamon Sullivan.

25 year old publicist Dani Venn won another Immunity pin on MasterChef Australia last night.

She is the first contestant in MasterChef history to win two Immunity pins.

Venn previously won an Immunity pin which she yielded when facing a previous Immunity challenge.

She defeated former Celebrity MasterChef champ swimmer Eamon Sullivan at his own dessert, a Chocolate Delice.

Venn scored 25 points to Sullivan’s 24 points.

It gives her a powerful Immunity at a crucial time in the competition.

But the challenge itself has attracted criticism because Sullivan is not a professional chef.  Indeed, last night the show also incorporated an experienced chef as guest judge, Phillipa Sibley.

The backlash follows growing criticism of the third series, despite its strong ratings.

Last night, viewers vented their feelings on Twitter:

treehousesweets: I’m going to stop watching #masterchef after tonight’s show. What an insult to previous seasons’ challenges.

Steven_Savona: “Tomorrow night on #MasterChef Australia, Dani is given a full-body massage, a manicure, six more immunity pins and one million dollars.”

stalepopcornau: Barely watched any of #masterchef tonight seeing as it was so obviously a setup for Dani to win. Really? Eamon Sullivan? Ugh.

mschefkitchen: Dani vs @Eamon_Sullivan in #masterchef Choc Delice challenge. How is that a challenge? He’s a swimmer! Predictably Dani wins. Go blue! #fb

skaye: Congrats to the producers of #Masterchef you’ve totally turned me off. Terrible cooks keep getting breaks – Dani and Ellie come to mind.

emsimpson77: Same level of celebrity chefs, same rules, same level of dish difficulty. Immunity has been too easy to win this year #masterchef

justinchiu: Next week on #masterchef Dani/Ellie competes for immunity against a 5 year old. There will be tears, just not sure whose yet.

MissAlienSandra: Eamon Sullivan is a swimmer of course a passionate cook eg. Dani would beat him on cooking a dessert! #Masterchef

Obfus_Cate: what a surprise. dani wins immunity. shock. horror. vomit. #masterchef

The Daily Telegraph even reports about online bullying against Dani Venn, including jokes about death threats.  Last year Joanne Zalm was the target of online vitriol, whilst My Kitchen Rules’ Melanie Maddock also received death threats on Facebook earlier this year.

Rick Maier, TEN’s head of drama said: “It is a very sad day for all of us when contestants on a TV program are subject to any kind of negative commentary from an anonymous few – whether that is Masterchef or any other program.  Dani is a delight on and off set, and has made the same steadfast commitment to the program that we ask of everyone.”

  1. Gosh we are quick to knock down people. If Dani was a contestant that cries every week and yes I know she has cried a few times but if she did it as often as last season we would knock her, if she was arrogant and nasty we would knock her. What is wrong with being a half full positive out going person who seems friendly.

Dani didnt choose who she goes up against. Hayden is well liked by the judges but he is getting through because he hasnt been in any eliminations. I suspect he will be through to top 2 or 3 at least probably may even win.

The judges have got it right this season. I like the remaining contestants and dont care who wins.

  2. Well Rick Maier from Ten, it is a very sad day when networks serve this tripe to viewers and expect there to be no negative comments.

  3. Now i love Eamon Sullivan but even I hardly watched it last night. So obvious Dani was gonna win another immunity and the judges just handed it to her. So to win immunity you don’t have to beat a chef at cooking, you have to beat a swimmer at cooking? Ridiculous. Masterchef. I’m over it. Not one dish this year has been of great standard, the challenges have been lucklastre, where’s the croquembouche? 8 layer vanilla cake? Nope instead they’re making burger and chips. So when’s MKR start cos Masterchef has jumped the shark this season and even though ratings still might be good, myself and many others have taken little interest this season and not a topic for conversation anymore.

  4. Masterchef this year is a joke. This season does not have that hold on me that other seasons had. As this season progresses it makes me more and more angry. It started when Cleo was eliminated, clearly a stand out cook, and it has progressively deteriorated each week.

The challenge against Eamon Sullivan was a joke, at this stage of the competition challenges should be getting harder not easier. He is a swimmer not a chef and although he may have won Celebrity Masterchef he does not work in a high pressure kitchen every day and Celebrity Masterchef was two long years ago.

This show is still rating highly but it has become a laughing stock this year. I for one have had enough and am no longer watching this tripe!

  5. Very disappointed in the immunity challenge last night. How is it fair to the other contestants that the challenge was against a celebrity not a chef? An immunity at this point in the game has a lot more power than at the beginning or half way through so you would think they’d bring in a chef not a swimmer.

I do not agree with people posting hate messages or death threats against Dani. It is just a TV show when it comes down to it and it’s the producers who make decisions on the content not the contestants.

In my eyes Masterchef has lost a lot of credibility and I will only be watching it while my old work mate continues in the show. Go Alana!!!!!

  6. All the other contestants seem happy for Dani, but are they. They have to act it out as they are on camera, truth be known they are feeling gutted. Dani didn’t
deserve that pin as she was competing against an Olympic swimmer not a chef.
.Perhaps now he could suggest that she beats him in the pool. I feel sorry for Alana who doesn’t get as much air time as Dani or Ellie but then she won’t be the winner. Ten’s head of drama said that Dani is a delight on and off the set
but after weeks of her on Masterchef I was hoping that her voice wouldn’t be so
grating. Sorry she is a little hard to take.

  7. Lose the immunity challenges all together, at this stage of the competition they shouldn’t be getting immunity anyway. The challenge was too easy and their is no balance to any of the challenges this year, put them through skills tests instead, at least then we would see who really does have some talent in the kitchen.

  8. the immunity challenges have been a joke. they’ve made it incredibly easy for the younger fresh faced contestants, but it’s been so difficult for the actually decent older cooks. turned me off the show, must say. (and i am a gen y person)

  9. The immunity challenges have become a joke. It should be the same standard each week: professional chefs cooking a signature dish against a contestant. The only way it could get worse is if they bring back the Junior Masterchef winner next week.

  10. Masterchef producers need to take very serious notice of the feedback about the series on Twitter and online forums such as the MC website and blogs like this. Despite rating well, viewers are clearly not happy with the way the series has panned out this year. The chef challenges have been a debacle this year, more so than series one and two. They either have to can the celebrity chef Tuesday episode or tweak it till they get it right. If this segment returns next year, I hope to see it has been changed so that it is not so open to criticism about favouritism, too much help given to the amateur, etc. It is a badly structured episode, they need to fix it.

I don’t have a problem with them using Eamon Sullivan last night. Anyone who saw Celebrity MC knows he is an incredibly accomplished cook who could easily beat most amateurs blindfold. His degree of virtuosity in the kitchen is quite startling. I remember George immediately offered him a job in one of his Melbourne restaurants when he saw how good he was. Eamon works part-time at a patisserie in Perth, so his cooking credentials are not in question, at least not by me.

  11. From misfit in New York back to angel in Sydney Master Chef Kitchen, you are a drama indeed.
Good to see you regain confidence with that familiar laugh.

  12. A joke, a swimmer against her and he doesn’t get a receipe, and Big Matt gives her a 9/10 for that, the judges to get together with their scores after all.

Masterchef 2011 has jumped the shark

  13. Negative feedback can be a good thing, aggressive or threatening feedback is an entirely different matter and should be subject to the full force of the law.
