Seven’s Weekend Sunrise hits the refresh button from today, and as revealed by TV Tonight, takes a more serious tone than before.
Newspaper editors from around the country will be grilled about why they covered stories in a particular way along with a panel of journalists to discuss stories of the week.
“I don’t want it to be Media Watch but I want some genuine accountability, I want to hear from these guys about why they do things,” Producer Adam Boland told The West Australian.
Presenters Andrew O’Keefe and Samantha Armytage will have bigger roles and hit the road to film stories, while James Tobin’s role has been expanded to include social media updates from Twitter, Facebook and email.
George Houvardas (Packed to the Rafters) and Shae Brewster (Saturday Disney) will give a round-up of the weekend’s events on Saturdays.
Sports presenter Simon Reeve (Beyond 2000) will also look at the latest apps. Melbourne indie band Set Sail will perform.
Boland is also on the look out for nannas, to make sure the voice of the elderly is heard on national TV.
It airs 7-9am today and 7-10am tomorrow.
Updated: In an ironic twist of fate, today’s show did not broadcast. Adam Boland told TV Tonight: Server crash meant we couldn’t get to air. Haven’t seen anything like it before. We couldn’t even access stuff already cut to run off tape back-up. Techs in London had to be called to work through it. Anyway, back tomorrow. Sincere apologies.

Listen, any chance we have of escaping that clown AOK is okay with me. If that means more blackouts, Adam Boland, I am good with that.
It costs too much money to have Australian servers. It’s much cheaper to send data half way across the world than from two places within Australia.
Why do they have their servers overseas and not in Australia?
Can’t believe all the comments from people who don’t even watch the show, taking the opportunity to sink the boot in. Andrew & Sam are a great team and I wish them all the best with the show tomorrow
i bet someone just forgot to plug it in. if it wasn’t that maybe they should have tried turning it off and on.
@Adam Boland – +1 regarding you taking the time to let people know what was going on. Really wish others would take your lead, esp when there are late schedule changes, gaps in fast-tracked overseas shows, etc.
What a load of BS
Looks like I was one of many that tuned in especially to see revamped show.
Oh well, 2 hours sleep, I won’t get back.
Nice to see Adam Boland gives David & TV Tonight respect by posting in here.
Kudos to Adam for doing that – I will give weekend Sunrise another chance, if I wake up.
Now if only other networks would answer age old question – programming by numbers ?
Kudos to Adam Boland, he’s the only EP I’ve seen that is all over social media and media websites such as this -there should be more of it!
I bet Prue McSween pulled the plug
Problem fixed. And those who were asking: yes, we have back-ups – but even they went down today. First time I’ve seen something like that in my 10 years at Seven. Anyway, such is life. On with the show, 7am tomorrow.
At least we didn’t have to look and listen to Jessica Rowe. She can’t possibly be part of the new team! Good opportunity to ease her out.
Isn’t this the same system sky news want to use for Australia network? Yikes!
I smiled when I heard the news in my car earlier.
This might even get more people interested tomorrow.
@ Tasmanian de√il, maybe because comments hadn’t been moderated by David when they posted their message, so weren’t aware that the problem was affecting everyone? No need to be a wise guy…
This show really needed a make over. Adam Boland is part genious. He is responsible not only for Sunrise but changed the landscape for morning tv everywhere. If all his efforts is only doing Weekend Sunrise it should be good. I think when he was doing all the other stuff burnout would of crept in.
James Tobin’s role has been “expanded” to include looking at Twitter and Simon Reeve will look at the latest apps? Wow, they’re is so modern and on the pulse I’m surprised they haven’t rebranded it Weekend Sunrise 2.0.
Why are two dozen comments on this post saying the exact same thing? We get it.
😕
Back on topic, Sunrise didn’t go to air today due to technical difficulties, if anyone was unaware…
So having George Houvardas, the class clown, and looking at Twitter and Facebook is supposed to be more serious???
I have a one word review for Saturday Sunrise: Fail.
It wasn’t even on this morning, not sure why
All this brouhaha thwarted by a “technical difficulty” …..
Must have been a pretty big one, goes any info David?
Looks like there was an error this morning –
Might need to click the refresh button again lol!
