Ray questions Big Brother ‘sound-proof’ chamber

Big Brother's sound-proof chamber is not so sound-proof, according to evicted housemate Ray Baxter.

The secret is out… literally.

Big Brother‘s sound-proof chamber is not so sound-proof, according to evicted housemate Ray Baxter.

The chamber is where housemates nominate against one another, with other contestant seated close by.

The buff veterinarian told host Sonia Kruger fellow housemate Benjamin was able to hear him during nominations.

“Let’s just say that chamber wasn’t exactly soundproof,” he told her.

Kruger quickly clarified that producers had checked it was soundproof, but Ray was having none of it, adding that it was “definitely” not soundproofed.

It was an embarrassing moment for producers.

Meanwhile the show introduces a male intruder tonight, no doubt to try and thwart Seven’s live X Factor shows.

  1. The Behind Big Brother website has an update. I’m usure if I’m allowed to post the relevant quote.

Without directly quoting, Sarah apparantly told someone in an airport queue that you can see reflections, and they can definately hear S sounds of the person nominating. My reading of it also seems to indicate they do pipe music into the room during nominations.

Also in the first nominations Big Brother demonstrated its “sound proofness” by asking questions of housemates in the room while someone was in the booth.

I think for the integrity of the process they need to go back to individual housemates in the diary room.

  2. Last night Sonia tried to dismiss Ray’s claims by saying Ben probably read lips. Well to me that’s just as bad. There should be no opportunity to see any of this – put the nominators back into the diary room. Good on Ray for sticking to his guns despite Sonia trying to shut him down.
And while they’re at it, seeing Ray was nominated by Ben (with superpower) on the basis of illegal knowledge – put him back in the house.

  3. The most interesting thing about this is how well the (seemingly multiple) conversations about sound leakage have been edited out. We had absolutely no idea about this based on the daily episodes. It took Ray mentioning it (incessantly) for it to become public, no doubt to the producers’ horror who have managed until last night to keep it a total secret. I think David’s idea of playing music in the room is the best one. If the booth really is sound proof, then music shouldn’t leak in, right? I look forward to seeing what they do tonight.

  4. Behind Big Brother fansite has last week’s nominations episode posted where you can hear Zoe coughing from inside the chamber while Michael was voting, it’s not soundproof.

  5. Ray never claimed he could hear through the soundbooth, only that he overheard Ben saying it wasn’t. (This conversation could be the result of his first nomination where he forgot to properly close the door)

That booth would have to have been rigorously tested when it’s so vital in nominations. Either way producers they will have to this clear up for today’s nominations today by showing further testing and/or airing the footage of Ben talking about it not being soundproof.

  6. Not a fan of this guy but kudos to him for saying it and then sticking with the allegations after the break! Will be interesting to see what happens with nominations tonight!
