Despite their name, Sunrise was without light this morning when a power outage hit its Martin Place headquarters.
The blackout hit at 7:30 am and full power was not restored until around 8:30am.
“The building plunged into darkness and the back-up generator failed,” Executive Producer Michael Pell told News Corp. “So we went to basic battery power. When that ran out the previous half hour of the show was replayed from our broadcast hub in Melbourne until we were back up, which we felt was preferable to a test pattern.
“The irony is our equipment in the North Queensland cyclone was working perfectly.
“We apologise to our viewers for the disruption but thank them for sticking with us.”
During the blackout the team amused themselves with a game of darts. And blaming that damned Cash Cow.

Can the Australian government please give us some money for a new back-up generator? @sunriseon7

This is about the third time, but the first on weekday Sunrise. The first time Weekend Sunrise failed to air because of a major technical glitch, the second time Weekend Sunrise was forced to broadcast out in the plaza because the studio lighting wasn’t working properly.
Things happen I guess but the staff should have been more organised when situations like these happen and with their back up equipments etc, I’ve actually started watching studio 10 it’s actually not bad with good crew not I tuned out from sunrise a while back today is much better.
Someone forgot to plug the generator in…
Why are people so stupid blaming the TV station for a blackout, ok, so the back up generator should have kicked in but didn’t so maybe they will check it regularly now, but how many of us check things on a regular basis if we never need them.
Wait… People actually got *upset* that David Koch wasn’t on air?
It must have been the most exciting thing that happened on Sunrise since Julian Biebar lip-synched a couple of songs.
Should be in the dark more often.
Today is so much better !!!
I bet it still beats the Today show ratings
Signal the redundant and superfluous belief, stance and anecdotes from one of the most extraneous Nine staffers- David Hurley.
The braindead mentality of the viewers complaining about the inconvenience caused was astonishing. “We were on a tight schedule waiting for the Cash Cow…”. As Kochie says, “S#&t happens”. Still wasn’t enough to make me turn over to Today.
So people sent them abusive emails…. Tells me everything I need to know about the type of people that watch sunrise.
Seven need to invest in some better generators. This has happened a few times over the years and the generators have failed dismally. As for all the hateful tweets, emails etc it wasn’t needed. It was out of their control.
Why are people sending them nasty emails? Stuff happens. It’s live.
This is what happens when you don’t test the backup generator regularly. Used to be every Sunday morning at another station. Then they tend to work when you need them.
It seems like Seven’s generators fail every time the power goes out and they need them…
Yeah, apparently people were sending them nasty abusive emails. People are stupid, it wasn’t their fault, these things happen.
