TV Tonight Awards: Best of 2019

Wins for Total Control, Five Bedrooms, Chernobyl, Bluey & Utopia.

Readers have voted ABC political drama Total Control as their Favourite Aussie Drama of 2019.

Voters in the 13th TV Tonight Awards also selected Deborah Mailman as their Favourite Aussie Female -a first for the star.

Deborah Mailman said, “A massive thank you to TV Tonight readers.

“I’m thrilled to receive this recognition.  I’m so proud of Total Control and given the strength of our Australian dramas and performances over the past year, this is a wonderful honour to be given. Thank you!”

Total Control beat off a strong first year by 10’s Five Bedrooms, which won Best New Aussie Show of 2019 and polled strongly in the Drama category. Both outranked Wentworth which has enjoyed a 4 year winning streak in this category.

Kat Stewart said, “I speak for all the cast in saying that we are thrilled that the discerning readers of TV Tonight have voted Five Bedrooms as Best New Show in 2019.

“In an increasingly challenging environment, it’s a joy to work with scripts from the killer partnership of Christine Bartlett and Michael Lucas. Their writing is brave, funny, full of heart, inclusive, progressive and fresh. A huge thanks to Hoodlum and 10 for making a show that we are all proud of. We love these characters and can’t wait to make Series 2 in 2020. Thank you TV Tonight!”

Utopia took out best Aussie Comedy while Shaun Micallef was again voted Favourite Male.

Chernobyl dominated the International category winning Best International Drama and Best International New Show of 2019.

There were new wins this year from Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds, Bluey and The Front Bar.

Special mention must go to those shows that completely swamped their respective categories including Have You Been Paying Attention?, Australian Survivor, The Living Room, Bluey and Survivor (US) -the latter is still unbeaten in its category.

  1. I put down Lego Masters as the best new show of 2019. Caught up watching LM on 9Now last year (due to study commitments) and I found this show to be more entertaining. Hamish Blake was a good host.
I also put down Shaun Micallef as my favourite male. I didn’t have the chance to watch TBYG and MAH as I have been very stressed but I still liked Shaun. Shaun was voted the most favourite male for 10 straight years. Well done.

  2. It’s interesting that three of the winner in the fav new international show are limited ‘one-and-done’ series in Chernobyl, Years and Years and Unbelievable (all great).
Morning Wars was so excellent it very nearly penetrated my Top 5 favourite shows of the year.
Watchmen too was excellent (and also another potential one and done series). I will watch The Mandalorian, but until Disney fixes their embarrassing problem of having no real first run premium TV I won’t be subscribing.

  3. On-screen and off-screen, there’s a very good reason everyone adores Deb Mailman. All talent and all class. Thrilled by this result – but hurry up please with season 2 of Total Control!

  4. Great results. I forgot to vote for Letdown!!! Opps. I picked Rosehaven. I need to get in the habit of writing them down in readiness for voting ? yet to watch Total Control but definitely will given the praise. Sitting on my PVR to watch soon.
