Friday Flashback: Fat Cat funeral

When Fat Cat was cancelled for being inappropriate, Humphrey B. Bear held a mock funeral.

In 1991 Fat Cat and Friends lost its “P” rating after the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal decided the program had “poor production values”, was not educational enough and was “not clearly defined and might confuse the young”.

After 19 years Seven decided to cancel the show and replace it with The Book Place hosted by Lynn Weston.

So incensed was the equally mute (and pants-less) Humphrey B. Bear that he laid a wreath at the door of the ABT for A Current Affair cameras. Brilliant.

There was such an outcry over the move that the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal soon disbanded the Children’s Program Committee.

Meanwhile Fat Cat would live on, becoming the mascot of Perth’s Telethon and still saying goodnight to Perth children on television at 7.30 every night.

Fat Cat: 1. Government fat cats: 0.
