The Paramount Network really need Yellowstone after a number of disappointments, it pinned its Paramount+ hopes on classic franchises like Star Trek but also misread the prospective fan base audience with the choice of screenplays that were developed and is now trying to make up lost ground. I agree that the US studios do still make a lot of tired looking shows but that probably says something about American lifestyle today and the need for some simple escapism.
Wow….I realized CBS was dominating in gross eyeballs but this list makes depressing reading for the other networks. If not for the Chicago family of shows, NBC would hardly feature in the top 20. As it is, there is no ABC in the top 20. I get that the non CBS networks will talk of demos (which is always what they do when not number 1) but this is really quite remarkable from CBS (and clearly not straight forward to replicate in Australia).
Yellowstone was originally sold to NBC Peacock where it was a hit, but numbers are not available. CBS had to buy it back and put it on their anywhere cable/streaming service. The Yellowstone spinoffs were made for Paramount+. Abbott’s Elementary was loved by the critics, but got a mid-season replacement slot and only averaged ca 2.5m and didn’t make the list. Here Disney put it straight on Disney+. It’s a list mostly of tired looking shows that are rating half what they were a few years ago.
