Laura Tingle praised in ABC external review

Review co-led by Laurie Oakes praises 7:30 political editor for her knowledge, experience and authority in reporting, analysing.

7:30 political editor Laura Tingle has received high praise from an external editorial review conducted by legendary Laurie Oakes and former head of the Australian Industry Group Heather Ridout.

The review, which looked at ABC’s economic election coverage, gave passing praise to political reporter, James Glenday, former host Leigh Sales, and finance expert Alan Kohler.

“The importance of Laura Tingle to 7.30 was demonstrated in the campaign,” Oakes and Ridout said. “The way she used her knowledge, experience and authority in reporting, analysing and providing context for issues and events helped to solve what used to be a real difficulty for the program – how to differentiate its coverage from what viewers had just seen on the news.

“Her economics expertise and Financial Review background were particularly valuable because of the dominance of economic issues in the campaign.”

But ABC political editor, Andrew Probyn, received a mild rebuke for his characterisation of Anthony Albanese’s inability to recall the official cash rate and the national unemployment rate.

“Andrew Probyn, like many others in the media, drew too long a bow by suggesting the twin gaffes ‘could derail Anthony Albanese’s election,’” they said.

News Breakfast was commended for crosses to David Speers (also noted for his Insiders commentary), Tom Lowrey and business reporter Nassim Khadem.

Afternoon Briefing on ABC News became “a must see” when Fran Kelly joined Greg Jennett.

  1. When after Leigh Sales announced she was leaving 7.30 but before her replacement was announced, I was one who felt Laura Tingle would not be a good replacement. Live interviewing others didn’t seem to be her strength (not hosting s broadcast) but I did comment at the time that her Canberra reporting and live crosses with Leigh were high quality – I agree with what’s been written about her above. Her reports are often around 5-8 minutes long (probably the envy of other Canberra reporters) and she is able to cover a lot in that time and does it clearly and IMO, in a balanced fashion. Rich in context also. Long may it continue.
