Nine settles defamation case with Laming

Nine agrees to pay former Liberal National MP Dr Andrew Laming an undisclosed amount and apologises over Nine News report.

Nine has settled a defamation case with former Liberal National MP Dr Andrew Laming following a Nine News story in March last year.

Nine Entertainment has agreed to pay Laming an undisclosed amount and apologise for the story which falsely accused him of taking an “upskirting” photograph of a woman while she was on her knees stacking a bar fridge.

Laming was never charged over the incident, and subsequently launched defamation proceedings against Nine last August.

The apology was read out in the federal court on Wednesday morning.

“On 27 March 2021, Nine News Queensland broadcast a report about Dr Laming who was at the time a member of federal parliament. Serious allegations were made about Dr Laming in that report and he sued Nine because of it. Nine News has now seen material which indicates that the photograph Dr Laming took was not lewd in nature. Nine News unreservedly withdraws those allegations about Dr Laming and apologises to him and his family for the hurt and harm caused by the report.”

Laming has already secured apologies from Greens senator Sarah-Hanson Young, Labor senator Murray Watt, former Victorian senator Derryn Hinch, News Corp Australia journalist Eliza Barr, and Queensland Labor party state MP Don Brown.

ABC has previously also settled a defamation case involving investigative reporter Louise Milligan and Laming.

Nine declined to comment.

  1. The media on TV has way too much say at anytime, they just help to ruin lives and damage reputation. Watch Media Watch on the ABC that show has a handle on damage done especially when the media getting it wrong with mixing up pictures and stories of various incidents on news/current affairs, they are just as bad as printed media mixing up pictures of the wrong people. Examples abound on that score.

  2. Will the networks and newspapers ever learn the damage done in the first place will never ever recover even after an apology, its the initial claim that people remember ?
