Frasier sequel gets series greenlight

Goodnight Seattle, hello new city for Dr. Frasier Crane.

A sequel series for Frasier, starring Kelsey Grammer, has been given the green light in the USA.

Paramount+ has given the thumbs up for a new series with Frasier‘s ‘next chapter’ living in a new city.

In a recent interview, Grammer said the character, who moved from Boston to Seattle for the original series, will end up in another new place. “He thinks he’s gonna go off and do one thing, and sure enough, his life takes him in another direction,” he shared. “And he ends up rich beyond his dreams.”

Deadline reports he will be surrounded by new characters, with original cast members potentially as guest appearances, but not as regulars. It suggests a 10 episode season is likely.

Frasier ran for 11 seasons between 1993 and 2004, setting a record for the most Emmy Awards won by a scripted series at the time, 37, including five as Outstanding Comedy Series.

While Paramount would own the rights for Australia it isn’t clear yet whether it might screen on 10 or Paramount+.

  1. This was first mooted in 2018 as a reboot with the original cast, then dimissed, then Paramount was interested last year with only Grammer attached.

  2. The more times I view Frasier, the more I adore it. It is just so witty, and so cleverly cast, staged and written, with performances that still feel so resonant. It will be a steep climb to get to the sort of quality and chemistry that the original had.

      1. very true, David. And with Brit Jane Leeves and English born John Mahoney; British educated Edward Hibbert among others, there was a strong Anglo vibe to it. It also used a lot of eminent stage actors in guest roles. Kelsey Grammer’s mellifluous voice towering over proceesings!

  3. Got the box set. Classy show but will be sad without John Mahoney a diamond in the rough. I imagine Eddie Crane is swinging on a cloud and died from old age. If the rest of the main characters are cast even as guest spots it will be worth a look in. David Hyde Pierce was a perfect choice in Julia on Foxtel recently. Frank Prady was a memorable role in The Good Wife too. Glad it’s a sequel and not a revival.

    1. I so agree with your comments on David Hyde Pierce in ‘Julia’ and his scenes with Bebe Neuwirth were priceless. Her annual appearances on Frasier were always sublime.
