“I’m moving to the other end of the day”

ABC News presenter Joe O’Brien recently signed off a morning news shift he has anchored for 13 years.

But O’Brien is remaining with ABC News channel, now presenting from 5pm weekdays.

  1. 5pm onwards is an interesting place to put him. I hope they allow for his personality to shine like it has for the last 13 years, but I’m sure no matter what format they throw at him he will make it his own. I don’t do the evening news anymore and have not for years but Joe could change that.

  2. Absolutely love the way Joe presents the news each morning in his seemingly off-the-cuff manner and is always flexible in adapting to the breaking news which always seems to derail the ABC’s planned news schedule. I always found that he had the unique skills to adapt to those fast-paced news mornings and I feel that post-5pm there is not a similar quantity or chance of many breaking news stories like Joe has experienced over the past 13 years. Still, I hope he enjoys the evening slot!!

    1. The way the news cycle works these days, I wouldn’t be so sure about there not being as many breaking news stories in the evening when compared to the morning. Some days, the news just doesn’t stop.

  3. Have to agree with the other comments; Joe is a great presenter, and I often keep ABC News on in the background when at home in the mornings, and I am used to him being part of my day. At least I know I can now see him late in the afternoon now, though I guess no more banter with the weather and sports folk from the breakfast show. Is this 5 PM gig a dedicated show, or just part of the rolling afternoon news coverage?

  4. Totally agree with the above compliments. Joe’s ability to visually deliver one story whilst keeping an eye on when to throw to a crucial live cross is professionalism at its sharpest. I’m glad to see him stay at the ABC.

  5. One of the most under-rated news presenters in the country. Such a natural.
That morning shift he’s just signed off from was just bedlam during COVID with all the morning pressers from Premiers and CHO’s, but he always managed it seamlessly.

    1. In hindsight, I wonder if some of those morning pressers should have been held later in the day so that they could have reached more viewers tuning in for the afternoon and evening news bulletins. It would have had the extra benefit of giving Joe an easier time, but he was able to show what a true professional he is by handling all of those pressers, and, if memory serves, his morning broadcast consistently placed in the top 20 multichannel shows of the day during the various COVID waves, often attracting more than 100,000 viewers. The Noon news with Roz Childs was the same way.
