Screen Forever 2023: Right time for NCIS: Sydney

"There will be an incident and there will be a reason for a properly-formed NCIS," says 10 exec.

Not much has been revealed yet about the new NCIS: Sydney series, currently shooting in Sydney.

But last week at Screen Forever conference, Dan Monaghan, Senior Vice President Content & Programming, Paramount ANZ, revealed there will be a story ‘incident’ which requires an NCIS force in Sydney… which could potentially suggest a crossover episode with the US series.

Speaking about how the series got off the ground locally, he said, ” My boss has been talking about it since I can remember, about getting a version. NCIS was hugely popular in Australia for a long time…. It’s such a beautiful setting the harbour that we have in Sydney, to get NCIS out here.

“There is actually NCIS in Sydney, there’s quite a lot of them. But the way the show will form, there will be an incident and there will be a reason for a properly-formed NCIS in the show,” he said.

“We’re obviously owned by Paramount, who is CBS, and we work so closely with them. I suppose if you talk about something long enough eventually the right time happens.

“And the right time happened this year. I think they’re just as excited at CBS as we are to get it off the ground.”

The series was announced for 2023 but 10 has not mentioned the series in its second half highlights yet.

Filming is currently underway.

  1. So is this written by local talent or US talent. At 10 episodes the scripts are probably all done, but with the US Writers Strike on going it may be something that runs into problems.

  2. “NCIS was hugely popular in Australia for a long time” until TEN, and 10, destroyed it by umpteen reruns, mixing new eps with repeats so no one knew what was new and who was were, continuity wise. This Sunday night they have scheduled three eps back to back, all reruns, plus others during the week.

  3. I have never watched it, but know there were lots of loyal fans. This line makes me laugh “NCIS was hugely popular in Australia for a long time” Key word was, I think they’ve missed the boat. Pun not intended!

    1. It’s being made for US audiences, not us-a new NCIS offshoot will be cheaper to make, with a new less expensive cast and tax breaks from the state and federal govts here-that it makes no sense will be ignored as there is no permanent US military presence here except for some US Marines in the NT and some personnel at Pine Gap, both a very long way from Sidanee!

      1. There’s an NCIS field office in Perth, but maybe there are individual staff in Sydney (which seems to be the sugegstion). Not sure how the jurisdiction works! Agree it is pitched to global NCIS audience.

        1. Exmouth used to be a major communications base for USN submarines here in WA and their ships often pulled into Fremantle for R ‘n R-much less so these days-NCIS are only here for liason, not running around the country packing and using heat…
