Yellowstone to end with Season 5

Updated: Season 5 resumes in November as a final season, but a sequel has also been ordered from Taylor Sheridan.

Updated:

Yellowstone has confirmed its final season with season five set to resume in November on Stan.

Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits – from 1883 to Tulsa King, and I am confident our Yellowstone sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life,” said Chris McCarthy, president & CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios.

However an untitled sequel series will debut in December.

“The Dutton story continues, picking up where Yellowstone leaves off in another epic tale. We are thrilled to bring this new journey to audiences around the world,” said David Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios.

Kevin Costner is not returning to Yellowstone after season 5, according to ET.

But the news is not yet confirmed.

The news comes after reports of alleged drama with co-creator Taylor Sheridan over his filming commitments.

There is no update on when the cast and crew are going to return to Montana, where the series is filmed, to finish shooting season 5’s remaining episodes. As a result, there’s been a lot of confusion and frustration.

The news cames nearly two months after it was first reported that Yellowstone might come to an end in its current form sooner than expected amid a Deadline report alleging disagreements over Costner’s filming schedule.

At the time, a spokesperson for Paramount Network told ET that the network had “no news to report,” while adding that Costner “is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come.”

Puck News reporter Matthew Belloni was the first to report on the on-set challenges and disagreements.

Yellowstone is really in limbo right now until they can figure out whether Costner is coming back or, more likely, whether he’s going to be written out of the show,” Belloni explained. “Once that determination is made, they can finish writing the second half of this season, shoot it, and it will likely air in the fall.”

News of Costner’s exit from the show comes a day after it was revealed that his wife of more than 18 years, Christine Costner, filed for divorce.

“It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action,” Costner’s representative told ET on Monday. “We ask that his, Christine’s and their children’s privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time.”

  1. Yellowstone is a very different show without him. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure I’d watch it without him. Certainly I’d be more “turned off” by his absence. It’s always disheartening when things extrinsic to the series have such a marked effect on it. Rumours have been going around for a while that his soon-to-be-ex-wife has been unhappy about how long Costner spends away for home for at least a couple of years.

That said, the start to season 5 was … not its strongest. I know it’s a glorified soap opera at its heart, but we verged on ridiculous at times. A premature exit while not ideal for any series, I feel these developments might force hands.

  2. The reason for the on set problems, according to some sources, is that Mr. Costner whose career had been in a slump before his Yellowstone’s success, fell out with writer Taylor Sheridan over the screenplay, but then it turned out that in reality Costner was developing his own Western movie called ‘Horizon’ which will have three sequels made, Horizon will star Sam Worthington among others. Kevin wanted to spend less time on the Yellowstone set because of his involvement developing his Horizon movie series and made life difficult for Sheridan and his fellow actors who would have to work around his much shortened Yellowstone acting schedule. Part of the reason to develop the Yellowstone spin-offs was because Mr. Costner looked increasingly unlikely to continue working on the show, and Mr. Sheridan didn’t want to replace him in the main role.
