Returning: Yellowstone

Updated: Returning in November, but Kevin Costner confirms, "I’m not going to be able to continue."

US drama Yellowstone will return on Monday, November 11, same day as the U.S., on Stan.

The megahit series is currently filming in Montana but without Kevin Costner, who has expressed a desire to return “under the right circumstances.”

Costner has today taken to Instagram to tell his followers:

“I want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that’s required, and thinking about Yellowstone, that beloved series that I love, that I know you love, I just realised that I’m not going to be able to continue season five B or into the future. It was something that really changed me. I loved it. And I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning and I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop and I’ll see you at the movies.”

Yellowstone chronicles the Dutton family who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect – the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders – an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park.

Yellowstone is co-created by Oscar®-nominated screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (Wind River, Hell or High Water, Sicario) and John Linson. Executive producers include John Linson, Art Linson, Taylor Sheridan, Kevin Costner, David C. Glasser, Bob Yari, Stephen Kay, Michael Friedman, Christina Voros and Keith Cox. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

  1. It was my understanding the half season renewal was meant to be Costner’s final. This is a real punch in the guts to the loyal fans who now likely won’t see the series end how Sheridan had envisaged and instead get a second rate ending at best. Very disappointing indeed.

  2. I’m sure if Kevin ever writes an autobiography about his long acting career a chapter could be devoted to ‘Yellowstone’ , especially the tense negotiations between himself and the producers just to finish up his role in the show. When Kevin says; ”I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning and I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop and I’ll see you at the movies.” This tells us about Mr. Costner’s true character as a businessman and where he believes the declining part of his acting career will be best served. Yellowstone was increasingly becoming a saga with Kevin in the main role and maybe Taylor Sheridan saw the writing on the wall for ‘his’ show, which is why we have the Yellowstone spin-offs, just to keep the franchise going.

  3. Forgive my confusion, but isn’t ‘Yellowstone’ “ending” because the erstwhile (?) Mrs Costner didn’t like how long Mr was spending away from home? Or are they just priming us for the next spinoff?
