2023 Gold Logie: It’s Sonia!

Seven's versatile and glamorous go-to host has taken out TV's top award.

Sonia Kruger has won the Gold Logie for 2023.

Her win caps off a year hosting Dancing with the Stars, The Voice and Big Brother for Seven, as well as Academy Awards red carpet and tonight’s Logie Awards red carpet.

She takes out the win over Hamish Blake, Julia Morris, Leigh Sales, Mark Coles Smith, Osher Günsberg, Shaun Micallef.

It was her second nomination for the Gold Logie and first win.

“This is so weird!” she said.

“To have you present it Daryl,” she said to Daryl Somers, who presented her with the the Gold. “I’ve been so lucky. I’ve worked with some absolute legends and some great people.

She thanked those who worked on Dancing with the Stars, The Voice and Big Brother, “God AKA James Warburton, who hd the brilliant idea of stealing a successful format from Channel Nine and putting it on Channel Seve. No-one had done that before,” and family “their names escape me.”

She dedicated the Logie to her late father and referenced a backstage sign that said, “Hosting is not about what you do, it’s about how you make other people feel.”

Onya Sonia.

  1. So we’ll all just pretend she wasn’t found guilty by the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal of racially vilifying Muslims on air and called for Muslim immigration to be stopped to Australia? Nice voting Australia. Don’t believe in cancelling people, but this was all a bit much for a commercial, professional presenter.

  2. Lisa Wilkinson: “Are you saying you would like our borders closed to muslims at this point”

    Sonia Kruger: Yes, I would

    Gold Logie Winner Sonia Kruger.

  3. Ugh not a fan of Sonia at all but clearly Channel 7’s relentless marketing and campaigning to vote for her paid off. The other point to consider is that many of the other nominees are fairly similar (comedian/presenters) and they would split votes amongst the younger demographics. Sonia probably appeals more to an older demographic that only had her or Leigh Sales to choose between. I’ve never even heard of the actor who was nominated for Gold, has he done anything other than Mystery Road?

  4. Given that he beat her to the best presenter award, one does wonder what might have happened if the ABC had put Tony Armstrong forward for the gold.

    1. Tony definitely has some sort of following. From Yokayi Footy, ABC and Ten had saw potential to get Tony to be a presenter on ABC News Breakfast, A Dog’s World, and The Project.

Usually people will say that it’s box ticking, though I do see someone who is very engaging and good at presenting, and has merit, and so do the headhunters when it comes to talent.

  5. I was really happy Sonia won. She has been a funny, lively, and entertaining host for years and years.

What I did find interesting in the ad break just before the Gold, and there was a brief pointer to the 7 – i noticed that none of them had won anything earlier in the night – nor their shows! Leigh Sales’ Australian Story’ had won, but that wasn’t for her introductions. Hamish, Julia, Shaun, Osher, Mark had all been empty handed by the time the Gold was presented, making it impossible to predict who had the momentum. Normally the Gold winner will have also taken a Silver for presenting or acting as well.

When Daryl came out to present, I thought, yep, it’s Sonia.

  6. sonia is a natural its not an easy job it looks easy but get up there under the cameras shes got far more talent then julia unfunny morris she couldnt do what sonia done but lets be honest the logie is to see tv week its just a bit of fun not to be taken seriously people need a bit of a lift specialy if you live in vic

  7. Sonia is terrible, over used and doesn’t really have great screen presence for presenting. The Logies are meaningless now. I don’t understand why a presenter who is only nominated for their volume of shows on tv is even nominated.she hasn’t done anything spectacular. Gold should be for actors who breathe life into meaty stories. Presenters getting the award are boring

  8. There was a time when people with real talent won this. Bert Newton. Graham Kennedy. Actors ect. It is amazing how many shows and people with such low ratings won an award. The Logies are becoming less relevant each year. Yawn!!! No I did not watch it.

  9. Well it’s not surprising… she hosts practically everything on Seven and their relentless campaigning was an avalanche… but it is no less baffling. And what’s crazy is that she’s not even amazing at what she does imo. I’ve always found her to be a very mediocre host. I fear this is what they’ll do with the Vet. It’ll be him and Sonia in a few years fronting every single tent pole show. It is beyond me how this guy gets any gig at all with his off-putting, wooden style. The red carpet was close to embarrassing the way it was edited… I watched the last 5 minutes only for the anticipation for Pang’s opening (which was very good!).

  10. After Tom Gleeson campaigned to be nominated for a Gold (and then win it), TV Week changed the way we nominated for the “popular awards”.

These days, an industry chooses the nominations for the popular awards, in which the public then votes for the winner. Seven decided to go on a publicity stunt and watermark every single tv show to vote for Sonia Kruger to win.

What’s the difference between Tom Gleeson’s win and Sonia win?

  11. All of the people asking how she won need to think about three distinct shows she fronts, each with different fan bases. And also the network ran countless ads promoting the nomination, encouraging people to vote. Luck might also have something to do with it like it does with all awards. Sometimes I find it healthy to remember (though it’s easy to forget) that if you haven’t got anything nice to say don’t say it all. And we have all said things we regret in the past, though everyone is entitled to their opinion and to be judged for having it.

  12. Seven did a good job giving her a plug every chance they could..she even made Seven News tonight (another plug of course)…strange though Seven had the right to the Logies and surely it’s no coincidence she just happens to be one of their star pupils who won the gold….and now I’ve no doubt Seven be will be getting plenty of mileage out of this…ho hum 💤

  13. Won done Sonia Kruger!!! She had unfair advantage having her name being watermarked across several programs and Daryl presenting award. Thanks David for providing updates.

  14. So, reading off a teleprompter is now Gold Logie worthy?

There’s no acting, no drama, no substance, just being a b-rated TV host. There’s a reason FTA and these ridiculous awards are about as useless as the word ‘woke’.

      1. I’ve had a problem with the Gold Logie since it it became nothing other than a popularity award for a Network. Going ‘off script’ for a segment of less than 15-30 seconds isn’t GL worthy.

  15. Yes, she’s had a career (briefly on film) and mainly on the telly. But as a Gold Logie winner? Sigh……

Sorry Shaun Micallef for the loss.

    1. How much did 7 pay for Sonia to win Gold and unbelievably for Amy Shark to win the Graham Kennedy award?
The few minutes I saw of the Red Carpet was awful. The editing was atrocious & the interviews all seemed to feature 7 network talent
