TV Tonight Awards 2014: ABC, TEN top winners list.

"Better than a Logie," says Shaun Micallef, voted Favourite Male yet again by TV Tonight readers.

ABC and TEN have dominated the 8th annual TV Tonight Awards, as voted by readers.

ABC won Best Free to Air Network and ELEVEN took best multichannel with both networks securing a slew of category wins for individual shows.

Offspring was voted Best Aussie Drama once again while Asher Keddie won the Favourite Female for the fifth year in a row.

The unbeatable Shaun Micallef clocks up six wins as Favourite Male despite a strong social media campaign by Please Like Me fans for Josh Thomas -but the latter did win the Comedy title.

Micallef thanked readers for their undying support.

“I’ve always felt that awards are meaningless baubles; trite and inconsequential and, frankly, insultingly gauche – but when I receive one, they somehow become very special and real indications that the quality of one’s work has been genuinely appreciated by a discerning majority of right thinking people,” he said.

“This is particularly so of the TV Tonight Award, which I have been fortunate enough to have received several times and for which I congratulate the TV Tonight Readership (now 8 years old; exactly my demographic) on their good taste.

“This award is much better than a Logie because I don’t actually have to turn up to some dreary, tedious, poorly hosted ceremony and collect it (and I’m not saying that ‘cos Housos won last year and we weren’t even freaking nominated).

“Thank you TV Tonight click-onners and thank you David Knox – or Knoxland, as the industry calls him (Ed: they do?) – for your support over the years.”

Wins for other networks were modest: Sunrise and the AFL Grand Final won for Seven, Fargo and First Contact for SBS and Survivor for Nine.

But while there were plenty of repeat winners in categories, Showcase has finally toppled FOX8 as Best Subscription channel.

There were 596 surveys completed this year.

  1. I did not vote….I looked at the list and thought ..oh yes….wish I had voted for that….but remembering 5 minutes ago can be an issue sometimes *G*….so that is why I did not vote…really would have liked to..

  2. This is excellent news – even though not all the performers and TV shows I voted for won I quite agree with the outcomes stated here. Also re comedies by the FTA networks – every now and then Home and Away come out with some good comedic lines – especially Emily Symons who plays Marilyn, and I think she is a great example of a performer who is very under-used (and under-rated) by the show she is in.

  3. Oh wow – a lot of the shows/performers I voted for won.

Looks like there are 595 other people out there with the same good taste.

    Well done everyone.

  4. Fascinating as always David. And once again i find myself wishing that the ratings meters were exclusively in the hands of TV Tonight readers and their excellent taste…

  5. Asher Keddie won favourite female three years in a row. That was unbelievable.
And I just want to see Julia Morris win the favourite female for the first time in 2015.

  6. Love this – TVT readers do have good taste. Also glad to see Masterchef’s getting back on track winning over MKR’s awful descent into selling gossip mags. Fargo and Survivor are deserved wins, too, though Wentworth deserved the win for being the best Aussie drama of recent years, not just 2014.

  7. I was going to make a comment about ABC cleaning up the Aussie comedy award. But then I thought about it, and wondered if the commercial networks actually made any comedy, other than A Current Affair.

  8. The ABC is the best for Australian comedies. It’s interesting that The Living Room keeps winning for Best Lifestyle. In the Logies it’s a different story as Better Homes and Gardens has taken out the TV Week awards for the past few years.
Where is The Voice? In a season that had talent such as the quirky Kat Jade and amazing Anja Nissen I find it most strange that no-body voted for it. Come on Kylie was a judge.
