malcolm-in-the-middleNeighbours will be replaced over summer by reruns of Malcolm in the Middle.

TEN will begin the series from the Pilot episode.

Malcolm introduces us to his world, dominated by omnipresent schoolyard bully Spath and made worse by his enforced friendship with Stevie, an asthmatic wheelchair genius.

It begins 6:30pm Monday December 7th.

  1. I’m just wondering, when did Channel 10 trade Seinfeld & Just Shoot Me with Channel 9 for Friends & Malcom in the middle. Does any long running sitcom that goes into repeats stay on the network that aired most of it’s original episodes??

Dave, Nine got Just Shoot Me! & Seinfeld, with others such as The Nanny from their studio output deal with Sony, while Ten got Friends, & presumably Malcolm In The Middle as well, by themselves from WB and Regency respectively. There was no trade so to speak.

  2. Oh TEN, give up on the re-runs! They suck diddly ukk. If you ask me I’d watch a show until it is re-tooled. This one failed me. I think they could cut the 7PM project, and put MasterChef on at this time slot between 6:30 and 7:30pm! It will be a killer and knock off even the ACA and TT Fans.

  3. 9 never even finished the series, it’s a shame 10 won’t get up to this point so we can see these episodes for the first time, maybe next summer or the one after that.

  4. Christine,

I’m sure 70% of the country that doesn’t have Pay TV would like to disagree with you. But thanks for letting us mere mortals know you have Pay…

  6. @slydoggie: I’m aware of the production costs, but at the same time, you want something that people will actually will be watching. Malcolm had its day, and while I’m not suggesting they slot in something from the current calendar year, which, as you rightfully stated, would be too expensive, I feel like they’d have something in their vaults that’s a bit newer than Malcolm, and not as recycled.

From memory Ten has output deals with Fox and CBS. With a bit of digging, I’m sure they could find something. Hell, if they could clear it with the censors, old episodes of Cops might work.

  7. @Lucas: Not really that bizarre. There are not many quality 30 mins programs going around. You mention that TEN has many continuing and potentially hit series…care to name at least one?

@Vinny and Vic: You’ll probably find that Nine’s rights have lapsed on the older series’ and TEN has picked them up in their US Studio output deals which may see them sharing some content with Pay TV (although likely to be different series to what is on FTA). New content costs money to produce…something like this from the US would have had very little associated cost. Why do you think GO! and 7Two are full of really old series? It’s cheap. It’s not a programming strategy, its what the debt ridden Ch9 and Ch7 could afford to try and pass off their channels as legitimate digital FTA channels.

  8. @Justin: Channel Nine never aired any of the final season (well in Adelaide at least). They stopped early on in season 6 after putting double eps on a Saturday night during summer for two or three weeks – with no advertising of course.
It then went to Arena in 2007 from ‘Pilot’ S01E01 to end of Season 6, then Comedy took over and aired season 7 (the final). Then 111 had it when it premiered, and now on Comedy again. The first time I got to see the final season was when it premiered on Comedy.
I wonder where TEN will dump this after the Neighbours break. I assume no where, or the new channel in 2010.

  9. I guess they figure no one will be watching anyway or they need 40 plus eps to fill 2 months 5 nights a wee… oh wait why not run The Office from the pilot to promote it along with new eps they have planned for 2 x a week.

  10. Doesn’t really matter does it? It’s only temporary after all and even then no one will watch during that time and Neighbours returns a few weeks into January anyway, long before ratings begins.

  11. cool, will be watching since its from the very beginning.

boy, Nine sure do like to give away older shows!

Band of Brothers, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Wire, Friends, Smallville etc.

they’ll never give up any of their crime shows though!

  12. My guess is that they sold them to the Comedy Channel, which now must be “leasing” it to Ten.

Eh, at least it’s something different. I feel like they could have slotted in something better, or newer in that spot, but whatever, at least it’s not double episodes of The Simpsons or something like that.

  13. Ten definitely likes to give other channels US sitcoms a second chance. Maybe its because there cupboards are bare with new content these days?

Not that I’m complaining with this choice, I’ll be tuning in when I’m home that early.

Did 9 ever finish showing the series? After a few failed attempts at Saturday evening screenings over the summer, it was making an appearance on weekend afternoons about a year ago.

  14. Yes I love this show. One of the best comedies ever. It brings back memories of my childhood and the crazy stuff me and my bro use to 2 (we were complete animal children like in malcom but settled as teen) Im always watching it on comedy and now i can see it on ten. hope it rates well and replaces the simpsons at 6pm when ratings start

  15. What an incredibly bizarre decision! Why waste the opportunity to promote a continuing and potentially hit series (of which TEN have many) by inserting an axed program??
