Panic stations as TEN dumps more shows

The cure or the cause? Trigger-happy TEN cuts out Rules of Engagement, Don't Forget the Lyrics, repeats of Glee and 30 minutes of Friday's 7PM Project. Updated.

engagement1It’s ‘Panic Stations” at Network TEN this summer as another raft of shows gets the chop from its schedules.

Rules of Engagement, Don’t Forget the Lyrics, Glee (repeats) have been dumped -even the extra 30 minutes of The 7PM Project has been ditched from Fridays, despite the network promising longer episodes through summer.

In their place are more Accidentally on Purpose, repeats of Malcolm in the Middle, new Simpsons and movies.

TEN’s trigger-happy programming follows it cutting Supernatural, Stargate Universe and a number of other shows.

The network may be reacting to a dwindling summer share, but it’s cure is also part of the symptom. Audiences respond to consistency and don’t like shows disappearing without explanation.

It’s not exactly a great way to start the year with your audience.

In fact, TEN’s programming seems to be so sidetracked, its amendments even incorrectly slated Simpsons episodes as “All New Simpsons” with “Homer the Whopper” noted as a “Season Premiere.” For the record it aired here in October. Note: TEN has since advised of an error and updated with new episodes for Mondays and Wednesdays beginning with S21E5 “The Devil Wears Nada.”

One hour editions of The 7PM Project appear to have been saved from trimming. Mondays are generally the show’s best night.

Amongst all the changes, TEN still hasn’t found room to reschedule Supernatural yet…

TEN’s changes will take effect from Thursday.

  1. hi
was looking for a reason i couldnt find stargate universe on this week
lead me here and guess what
    they’ve axed it?
you have to be kidding me after just a few episodes, in the middle of summer?
with no word of where its going – a “new” hd channel perhaps?
man i thought c9 were bad with the sopranos etc
i still havent forgiven c10 for messing up b gallactica and the shield
now buying the dvd’s from the US
unfortunately dont like sgu enough to buy the videos
god i’d even promise to watch some ads if they’d keep these shows on …..

  2. Ten are dying here.

And two new Simpsons a week? o.O Only five new episodes have aired since Ten last aired the current season, and seeing as that The Simpsons season lengths are set to drop to around 20 episodes (as Fox are now commissioning 20 episodes a season since its switch to HD).

I could care less whether or not Ten air The Simpsons promptly after the U.S. I just want them to air them uncut. A single verbal mention to “cocaine” gets censored from The Simpsons in a PG timezone (even though such incidental references are permitted under the G rating), yet last week’s RoE contained constant visual and verbal references to marijuana, including sight of a bong, and that got away uncensored with a PG rating. What gives, Ten? =/

I’m not complaining about Malcolm in the Middle though. As long as they continue to air it after Neighbours returns, I’m dandy.

  3. Surley Ten has bought some movies in the last few years as part of their buying agreements
Even if their made for tv ones is better than showing the same old s— movies over and over .Should be limit on repeats
We all know ten is struggling financialy But just hand the licence back and would be happy with GO and 72 as they have clearly taken over as tens core audience now.
    Ten has missed the boat
Another 4th place for them tonight with 7 pm bore back

  4. I don’t understand why there are complaints about these latest changes. Accidentally on Purpose has been played Tue 1/12, Thu 3/12, Tue 8/12, Thu 10/12, Thu 17/12, Tue 22/12, Tue 29/12 and tomorrow Tue 5/1. The only time it was taken off on Thursday was for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Ten probably scheduled Rules of Engagement repeats for this Thursday before Christmas because they weren’t sure of the CBS schedule, and now given that they still have new episodes available, they have replaced the ROE repeats with AOP first run episodes. This is actually making their schedule more consistent. I don’t understand why that is a bad thing?
First run Simpsons replacing repeat ROE and Simpsons is also a good thing.
Movies replacing 2 shows on Sunday that nobody is watching is also a good thing.
Supernatural and Stargate were taken off last week…and even though I love both shows, they appeal to a niche audience and would be better off on Ten’s third channel if it turns out to be for general entertainment.

  5. Enough already, this is getting ridiculous. There must be a spinning wheel where they just throw darts at things and see what stays and what goes and what is supposed to be the new flavour (Malcom? come on!) As a side note, that other new show The Middle (?I think) – such a copy of Malcom in the middle!

  6. So long as they don’t touch the 5PM and late news, and news teams, I could care less what they do with whatever irrelevant shows TEN shows these days.

A shame really, because it was only a year or two ago that TEN was my channel of choice for viewing. They’ve axed the 6PM Simpsons (a staple) and stuffed around great shows like The Office and Nurse Jackie. They need to introduce a 3rd channel ASAP and show all the shows they refuse to air (regularly), for the fans of these shows. Throw in Simpsons episodes every 2 hours and it’ll rate better than TEN.

  7. For Fraking sake, will someone please reach into their TV’s and throttle the people responsible for pulling our favourite shows (eg Stargate, Supernatural). It’s Non Ratings period channel 10, give the shows a chance to build an audience during the holiday period, people are away or doing things with their families, and not necessarily watching TV. That’s what video/DVD recorders are for.

  8. The only logical explanation for this is that 10 have directly polled the 1000 or whatever families who actually have ratings boxes in their houses and these people do not like sci-fi, Love malcolm in the middle, adam sandler and other indifferent 90s movies.

  9. I notice that in response to 9 and their 2.5 Men and 10 with their Malcolm, 7 has rolled out trusty old Home Improvements once again.

I suppose we should be thankful it’s not MASH again?

  10. And surprise! Ten trots out their by now very worn out copy of Billy Madison to show on Sunday 10th. Let’s see now…Happy Gilmore was on not long ago, Billy Madison is scheduled Sunday, and I’m sure David posted a week or so ago that Love Actually will be on Ten before the end of the month. So, any guesses on what tired old movie Ten will air out next? Mean Girls anyone?

Ten’s “new” schedule sucks. They truly have NFI. Bring back Supernatural for a start, dig up the seasons of Smallville that are sitting on the shelf somewhere and show them, and give Malcolm a break! Is that really all you have? Oh yeah, and The Simpsons. *Eyeroll*.

  11. Oh my that’s a lot of Malcolm. Ten let me help you out a bit, you have Monk and Psych, two brillaint shows, how about playing them? I’d rather watch them than millionth repeats of Billy Madison, Die Hard and Home Alone.

  12. if i remember correctly, glee isnt returning to the states until march / april……….does that mean C10 are gonna fit in Another “encore” screening of the already aired episodes? If they air about a boy/mean girls/love actually 3-4 times a year, no reason why they wouldnt run glee another time before the next batch.

    *shudder*

  13. last Friday, there was 5 eps of Malcolm in The Middle. 6.30pm – 8.30pm as well as on at 11am

i’m not complaining though, haven’t seen these eps for a long time

And i think you can add the Die Hard movies to C10’s “repeat this movie” list.
I loves the movies, but little overkill? Die hard 3 was on a few months ago….

Also what the deal with Die Hard 1 sticking to C7 whereas the other DH movies been on C9 and C10 over the years?

  14. So they take of new shows and put more Malcolm in the Middle on a show that finished years ago and all the episodes have already been shown I just don’t see the logic in that

  15. would it be fair to say they’re “doing a channel 9” – chopping and changing all over the place ?

Oh C10, you really have lost the plot haven’t you? Im amazed The office is still airing when it does – though im not getting too comfortable with it.

Home alone 2…….ummm – isn’t xmass prettymuch over? Isn’t the idea of xmass movies to have them During xmas? While i am enjoying malcolm in the middle, 3 episodes on one night screams of desperation.

  16. Ohh one more thing. Networks should be given a time limit on how long they can hold on to new episodes of a series. After that time is up, it should be released on DVD and Foxtel immediately. It is not right that they can hold back three seasons of a show being released on Foxtel or DVD becasue they do not want to air it.

  17. Wow, so Many Malcolm in the Middle’s. Pity I have seen them to death on Foxtel – Good for no Fox people though… I notices the 4 episode run on Friday Night, how desperate of TEN.

@Happy_aussie : Threre were 7 seasons of Malcolm at an average of 22 eps a season, so about 150 episodes in total.
I noticed with Malcolm the other week, they aired a Season 1 or 2 episode and it was enhanced to 16:9, however the next episode was not. The show did not go to 16:9/HD until season 6. Don’t know what is going on there.

Rules of Engagement has never been overly popular here, so I dont know why they keep repeating it, plus, there have only been 35 episodes made so far, as the show is only given three short seasons (7, 13, 15 eps)

There was no need to repeat Glee in the Sunday slot, thats where the show should have been in the first place with new Eps. Idol should have been a mid week show like in the US, such as a Thursday.

The new Simpsons are starting early this year, and twice in a week, most probably because they are not that great.

Last week I was able to see all of Season 6 of Monk (by other means) as TEN did not show this in 2008 when they should have. Soon I will have season 7 and 8, 8 being the final.

  18. Ryan is right, there haven’t been any changes to programming for Accidentally on Purpose, it was always on Tues and Thurs at 7:30pm. I’ve watched it on both nights before
