Panic stations as TEN dumps more shows

The cure or the cause? Trigger-happy TEN cuts out Rules of Engagement, Don't Forget the Lyrics, repeats of Glee and 30 minutes of Friday's 7PM Project. Updated.

engagement1It’s ‘Panic Stations” at Network TEN this summer as another raft of shows gets the chop from its schedules.

Rules of Engagement, Don’t Forget the Lyrics, Glee (repeats) have been dumped -even the extra 30 minutes of The 7PM Project has been ditched from Fridays, despite the network promising longer episodes through summer.

In their place are more Accidentally on Purpose, repeats of Malcolm in the Middle, new Simpsons and movies.

TEN’s trigger-happy programming follows it cutting Supernatural, Stargate Universe and a number of other shows.

The network may be reacting to a dwindling summer share, but it’s cure is also part of the symptom. Audiences respond to consistency and don’t like shows disappearing without explanation.

It’s not exactly a great way to start the year with your audience.

In fact, TEN’s programming seems to be so sidetracked, its amendments even incorrectly slated Simpsons episodes as “All New Simpsons” with “Homer the Whopper” noted as a “Season Premiere.” For the record it aired here in October. Note: TEN has since advised of an error and updated with new episodes for Mondays and Wednesdays beginning with S21E5 “The Devil Wears Nada.”

One hour editions of The 7PM Project appear to have been saved from trimming. Mondays are generally the show’s best night.

Amongst all the changes, TEN still hasn’t found room to reschedule Supernatural yet…

TEN’s changes will take effect from Thursday.

  1. Meh – don’t like any of those shows anyway (well I’ll watch new Glee, but not repeat Glee). Ditto with Supernatural etc.

7PM needs to sort itself out quick smart – they aren’t even making any real comment about anything now e.g. last night talking about the hunger strike man who was annoyed re property clearing. What sort of clearing did he want to do, why wasn’t he allowed to, can he be exempt etc etc. Are you making comment on current affairs or are you competing for silliest joke of the night?

  2. Ten lost me when they dumped Supernatural. I can’t even be bothered with the NCIS repeats, which is a show I usually enjoy, and the remainder of their schedule is just rubbish. I’d much prefer to watch the 30 year-old Magnum PI repeats on 7Two than anything Ten has to offer at the moment. At least Tom Selleck had great legs back in the day!

  3. funny people mention double dare. That was their 4:30pm offering some 21 years ago where the Bold and the Beautiful sit today.won’t someone think of todays children

  4. 10 is in a huge hole this summer that I don’t see them climbing out of anytime soon, the increased competition from Go and 7TWO are going to mean its going to be a huge uphill climb getting eyes back on the network in Feb!

  5. These schedule changes scream out one thing, “Turn off Channel 10”.
Obviously they have monkeys in their programming department, of if they don’t maybe monkeys would do a better job.
PS: All the schedule changes are rubbish and I won’t be watching.
    Bye Bye 10

  6. Nurse Jackie is the only show I have watched on Ten in years. I persevered through the timeslot changes and set the DVR to record two hour blocks for this 30 minute show.

I don’t commit to much on FTA these days because I can’t be bothered playing the follow the show around the schedule and the now you see it now you don’t games. Used to watch heaps of Ten, even followed them through the car crash years when they showed Family Double Dare, Doogie Howser and Sledgehammer. I now gravitate to the relative safety and stability of ABC and Seven for the few hours of FTA viewing I indulge in.

    RIP TEN.

  7. Remember the days when you could use the tv guide to see what was on for the coming week? Or when ads were only seen in ad breaks? And rember the days before ad breaks were 4+ minutes long? They seem like so long ago.

  8. I wish Lyrics rated better, i loved watching/singing along to/playing that (granted they do the annoying ‘suspense’ building moment and occasionally ruin the suspense by doing a coming up which shows them singing a particular song, so you know they get it right upto that song).

This is exactly the reason people are turning away from regular TV and downloading instead, shows dropped left right and center with no idea when or if its coming back, if i didn;t read this site i wodulnt even know about it and go to tune in next week.

Ch 10, you make it really hard to love you. Your only saving grace is that 7 and 9 suck more.

  9. “Popup” adverts over programs, annoying watermarks, constantly changing the schedule so you never know when anythings on …….

And the networks wonder why people are turning to downloading ……

  10. I know it was in repeats … but no Glee 🙁

About time they did something about The 7pm Project an hour was just too long.

And just to keep myself amused. Ch10 why don’t you try America’s Next Top Model again …. anything is better than more Malcolm in the Middle.

  11. Why is Channel 10 turning into Channel 9? Seriously, I love both SGU and Supernatural and I can’t believe both are getting pulled. And I’ve been watching those Glee repeats and loving them. >:( Looks like I’ll be heading elsewhere to watch them now.

  12. I Suggest that on January 31, Ten should hold off the Season Three Premiere of Dance Australia until the next night with a Two Hour Premiere on February 1 to avoid a Ratings Clash with the Australian Open Mens Final on Seven and Australia vs Pakistan One Day Cricket Match on Nine, becuase last year the three Networks saw a Ratings Clash which saw the Ratings for Dance’s Season Two Premiere Drop from the Season One Auditions which topped the first week of Ratings in February 2008 and i don’t want to see a similar clash again.

  13. I can’t say I’m surprised by this… are people really angry that a repeat Simpsons, a repeat Glee, a repeat Lyrics and a repeat Rules have been taken off and 2 replaced by New Simpsons? I must say the Malcolm overload is a bit much… maybe the 7.30 ep could be replaced by some of the lost Guerilla Gardeners eps?

  14. @ Nathan : Channel Ten don’t schedule the repeats of Letterman, they screen the eps that are on CBS that week which sometimes are repeats.

@Janey : I don’t think people are complaining thet there are new eps instead of repeats but having the same show on numerous times a week is overkill when there are many shows that aren’t even getting a chance.

  15. You know what? They all stink. We’ve been watching GO.. it reminded us of why we got rid of cable… you see the same shows again in a few months time… I’ve seen the same episodes of Seinfeld now about 6 times and all on GO and in a lot less time than cable rotates shows.. At least 3 times a day.. then every 14 days it happens again.
9&7 keep on with that annoying scheduling .. that is, play it about 5-10minutes late in the hope of hooking more viewers. Well for us, the ABC is on time and we flick over regardless if the pretty hostage gets unitied from the tracks … More often than not, we’ll be coming from ABC to 7 or 9 only to find the previous show’s is still on. We then flick around and guess what? We go elsewhere.. like the pc .. bypass the lot of them…

  16. Not impressed. My wife and I are 46. We both really enjoy “Goren” and “The Boys”. No wonder 10’s ratings are slipping like a drunk supermodel on an icerink. It is really difficult to keep up with their scheduling. The contempt commercial tv has for it’s audience is astonishing.
They know they’re up against PS3’s ,Wii’s and more channels,so what do they do in the fit of sheer panic? 10, you’re supposed to pull the gun from it’s holster First.. now you’re going to have that foot seen to.

    Y’ Idjit.

  17. Every now and then I look at other country program guides such as NZ and UK the stations there seem to be able to schedule shows to late night or daytime etc if they don’t rate why can’t Australia?

  18. Are you people not reading the changes correctly? Repeat Rules of Engagement and Repeat Simpsons have been replaced with First Run Simpsons Monday and Wednesday! Repeat Rules of Engagement on Thursday has been replaced with First Run Accidentally On Purpose. Don’t Forget the Lyrics (which rated 365,000 last night) and repeat Glee has been replaced with family movies.
7pm Project has gone back to half an hour on Fridays (the hour shows were only temporary) and instead of another repeat Simpsons, Malcolm In The Middle has been scheduled just for Summer.
These are not bad changes, unless everyone would prefer repeats over first run episodes?
Ten are not panicking, they are just trying to get more eyeballs watching them so they can promote their regular schedule with new and returning shows when official ratings starts again in February. They made similar changes this time last year. With no cricket or tennis, it is hard to promote their shows at this time of year.
David, why don’t you do a story on what you think will be hit and miss shows this year?

  19. As an avid Supernatural viewer. I really would like an explanation to why they are taking off Supernatural when things are really heating up and getting interesting. Just when they show a promo for upcoming eps. It’s time to give these shows a real chance before dumping them because some of the viewers prefer movies that have been on so many times before.
Channel 10 does have Sci-Fi fans as well. Are they really that stupid that they can’t see that?

  20. At least I don’t feel like just the Supernatural and SGU fans have been picked on! Clearly Ten has completely lost the plot. It used to be practically the only channel I watched because it has all my favourite shows on.
Why can’t we have a new FTA channel dedicated to showing all the Sci Fi stuff? It could show Supernatural and all the other shows in a consistent time slot each week.
