Daryl “surprised” by Gold Logie snub

Daryl Somers admits he is surprised his name was left off this year's shortlist of Logie contenders -but he is in good company.

A tactful Daryl Somers has spoken about being left off TV Week’s Logie voting list this year.

Somers hosted two Hey Hey reunion specials last year that attracted stellar ratings and wide acclaim. He wasn’t listed as an option for Most Popular Presenter, which subsequently rules him out of the Gold Logie race.

“I’m just pleased the show is nominated -you’ll have to ask TV Week why I am not on the list,” Somers has told the Herald Sun.

“Maybe I’m not their demographic. I have to admit I was surprised – I thought I might be on the list when I saw the show was nominated.”

Co-star John Blackman called his omission “an absolute disgrace”.

“Of course he should have been nominated. He put in a sterling effort. But nothing surprises me about this industry any more,” Blackman said.

“I am pleased the show’s been nominated, though, because it’s a team effort.”

As TV Tonight pointed out last month, there are a number of names absent from Logies contention in the Popular categories: They include Ed Kavalee, John Waters, Tom Oliver, Ryan Moloney, Dave Hughes, Steve Bisley, Alan Fletcher, Sam Clark, Cornelia Frances, Ajay Rochester, Brian McFadden, Hamish Blake, Andy Lee, Kestie Morassi, James Morrison, David Reyne, Kim Watkins, Tim Ross, Merrick Watts, Andrew Denton, Henry Roth, Jimmy Barnes, Larry Emdur, Kylie Gillies, Matt Passmore, Peter Berner, Peter Helliar, Andrew Daddo, Jonathan Holmes, Cariba Heine, Garry McDonald and Magda Szubanski.

But Somers and those who are in his company would do well to look to their own networks for an explanation.

The Logies shortlist is drawn up from names submitted by networks but TV Week does limit the amount of nominations they can forward per category, and denies voters the chance to add “Other” names.

The Logies is also yet to induct Somers into its Hall of Fame.

The 2010 nominations will be announced on March 29th.

    1. Somers should have been on the list.

People need to remember, the Gold Logie list is drawn from the lists of Most Popular Actress / Actor / Presenter. So it’s not that Somers was left off a Gold list (as there is no list yet), but that he was left off a very extensive list of Presenters which includes people like Daniel Amalm, Dannii Minogue, Simon Reeve, Jack Thompson, Paul Vautin, Anh Doh, etc. Sarah Wilson was also off the list. Hey Hey and MasterChef both rated through the roof.

Somers should have been on that list. Logies should have added an “Other” option.

  1. I dont think any of those names do deserve to be on the list. Good call as I see it by tv week. Cornelia and Tom should be short listed for hall of fame in my eyes, there bulk of work over the years speaks for itself. As for Daryl? over-rated, over-stated(by himself) and unfortunately over here

  2. I have to agree with Somers. He’s 2 Hey Hey specials rated through the roof, and each episode lasted 3 or so hours each, which means that he was on air the same amount as those in some drama, which are 6x1hour episodes.

And we all know that the Logies Always leave out people from the lists, and they’re usually the good people who are left out!

  3. I couldn’t care that Daryl got left off, I think he’s won more than his share of Logies, however it shocks me at the names that have been left off mentioned above. It puts a shaddow over the Entire “most popular” section as it’s not a true representation of who the viewers want to honour. It just confirms what a joke this award ceremony has become and how much further it is deteriorating. Someone out there should start an online awards ceremony with actual statuettes which honours the actors for real, without the need for four hour ceremonies with B-List overseas guests to get people to watch.

  4. Oh no it’s got to his head. Really, he’s past he’s used by date that’s why DWTS got rid of him. Although Footy Show is well past too yet still seems to win Logies.

  5. Thank heavens he’s not in there. Somers is the 80’s version of Eddie Everywhere, and most of those who are in his company would do well to look at how crap their own shows are before asking why they’re not on the shortlist.

  6. Is Somers and Blackman for real. Somers did 2 episodes and it wasn’t like a telemovie or a drama. There are others who genuinely deserve a Logie nomination more than Somers did for 2009. Maybe next year he might be nominated if he does well this year.
