Returning: The Cleveland Show. Gone: Supernatural (again)

Sorry Supernatural fans....new episodes of The Cleveland Show are moving in.

This one probably won’t go down too well….

Next Monday night will be the last screening of Supernatural in its 10pm slot, and it has been spooked from TEN’s schedule.

In what seems like deja vu, the show will disappear after poor ratings (gee can we get any more puns in?).

The following week, Monday 19th, TEN has a lengthy MasterChef premiere followed by GNW and TEN News.

A week later, April 25th, The Cleveland Show returns with “Field of Streams” as a Series Return at 10pm, following a 90 minute GNW.

On Monday night Supernatural took just 330,000 viewers, despite fans running online campaigns championing its return.

  1. Season 3 is screeing on FOX8 on Saturday nights at 8.30pm. Season 2 is screening weekdays – back next week after the school holidays – every morning at 10am.

  2. a lot of people have been saying Ten should give supernatural to FOX8, but no-one seems to be aware that it is currently screening on FOX8 on friday or saturday nights, i can’t remember which because i haven’t been watching since its only on season 2 or 3 which i own anyway.

  3. Aus Supernatural show fans have mostly all already seen the episodes and since it appears the show will be dumped to Ten’s 3rd channel, that won’t be coming till July at the earliest.

  4. You can not expect a show to rate when you hold it back months after it’s US premiere date, bump it all over the schedule and promote it appallingly. Surely that is TV 101? Supernatural is never going to be a smash hit rater, it’s just not, that does not mean that it doesn’t have a place on TV as the bombardment of comments continue to show. I personally know no-one with a ratings box, I do know a lot of people who were watching Supernatural on Channel 10 regardless of the fact that they were up to date with watching it via download – and currently at episode 17 not episode 9.
I hope Channel 10 do put this greatly Underrated show on their new digital channel. I hope they take a lesson from 7Two in that regard. Doesn’t matter. I long ago lost faith in Channel 10 and the FTA channels in general who have completely lost touch with the fact that they provide entertainment and can no longer see the point in taking a risk to keep their audience loyal. Why should we care for and be loyal to a brand that cares so little about their audience. Bye Bye Channel 10, thank God for subscription TV.

  5. Imagine if 9 or ten had their hands on lost. I feel almost certain that they would nit have stuck with it past the third season. Thank you seven for always giving lost a slot and sticking with the show.

  6. @Dave “so there’s like 500,000 Australian Supernatural fans that are all overseas right now??”

Nah, only needs to be 250 of them with ratings boxes (1 person with a ratings box equals approx 2000 “viewers” in the reported figures).

So when Supernatural has “330,000” viewers, that’s actually just 165 people with ratings boxes watching. A million “viewers” is just 500 actual people.

This is why I have little to no faith in ratings figures for genre programs – the audience is never going to be a majority, and the accuracy of the ratings gets worse the smaller the real audience, since it’s standardised to demographics, not viewing preferences.

  7. To say I am disappointed with Ten’s decision would be an understatement, however I am also not surprised. It appears to me that Network Ten somehow lost the plot in how to market Supernatural effectively back in season three. The idea was good in theory, however the writer’s strike had a massive impact on some fast-tracked shows and that combined with the long breaks in airing new episodes in the US added to the problem. Constant changes to viewing times and days continue to impact especially with an episodic genre show like Supernatural.

Supernatural doesn’t really fit the mold/label people would like to attach to genre/niche show. Contrary to how many people would like to view Supernatural, it is Not specifically a teen show, it is a show that can have appeal across all ages and considering the subject matter, it deals with real human emotions in an incredibly realistic portrayal. For some the show can be viewed as just a bit of fun or for others it can be a fascinating study into the world as we know it now with deep complex issues and parallels to be drawn between mankind and good versus evil versus shades of grey over black or white over where is the line, that vital line which protects our humanity.

  8. Hands up anyone who’s been included in the ratings count? I’ve asked a ton of folks since Ch10 first axed Supernatural and ratings blamed, and I’ve yet to find one person. How was the figure of 330 000 calculated? Ch10 have had it in for Supernatural for the last three seasons – spasmodic airings, prolonged absences mid-season, lack of promotion, later than scheduled airings without notice, and inconsistent timeslots. No wonder we find other ways to view our favourite show. Ch10’s insincerity to Supernatural’s fans is once again duly noted. Hand the broadcasting rights of this fabulous show over to another channel that will do it justice. We haven’t bailed on Supernatural, but Channel Ten, we’re bailing on you.

  9. Awesome, Cleveland’s back! I was never interested in Supernatural, but this is disappointing for those who are fans of that show but comedy leading into (animated) comedy makes more sense then comedy leading into sci-fi/fantasy/whatever you wanna call it.

  10. Why are Supernatural fans complaining? Its obvious they aren’t watching the show or it would have gotten better ratings. It’s really up to them to keep Supernatural on air by watching, they have nobody else to blame but themselves.

  11. @ Franz Chong,

How would The Cleveland Show be able to replace the 7pm Project one night a week when it’s M-rated?? They’d either have to break regulatory guidelines or completely cut each episode to bits.

Let it stay in the later timeslot.

  12. Firstly I’ll say that I don’t watch Supernatural, I never have and this news doesn’t concern me. And sorry for changing the subject, but I think it’s plain biased to pull Supernatural due to poor ratings yet insist on keeping The 7pm Project which wouldn’t rate any better than Supernatural in the same timeslot. I’m not saying that Supernatural shouldn’t have been pulled, because it was rating too low anyway, but what I’m saying is that if Supernatural is fair game to be pulled, then The 7pm Project is too. And don’t blame the fans for not watching – obviously fans are watching but there are just so few of them that it doesn’t generate a high enough figure.

  13. Some of you may think sticking this after Good News Week as a bad thing but given the lack of decent alternatives elsewhere It deserves to do well.In an ideal world I would rather them drop 7pm Project on weekdays back to four shows a week and have Cleveland in there somewhere but will Ten go for that

  14. @ Craig

If Supernatural is 1,000 times better than The Cleveland show, shouldn’t it be getting 1,000 times the viewers and I’m sure The Cleveland show can get more than 33,000 viewers.

Accept it that Supernatural is Over rated and crap!

  15. The decision by Ten does not surprise me. I was actually surprised they listened to fans in the first place. But it was all just lip service. Of course Supernatural does not show up well in the ratings, it’s not that fans aren’t watching it’s the ratings system that is not capturing a true representation of viewers.

Well, Ten, you gave Supernatural a second chance so I gave you one. I’m done. Channel Ten is being deleted from my TV channel settings.

  16. @Elise – yes that is right, up to a point. When the rights laps then they can go else where, but that usually takes years and you’re much better just getting the DVDs on Amazon or eBay about 6 months after the end of the season.

BTW those knocking Supernatural, No matter what you may think of the show it’s still 100 times better that The Cleveland Show! who bets they have another change next week?

Accidentally on Purpose just returned to US screens with new eps TEN is yet to air!

  17. Ch 10 only have themselves to blame for this. I gave up on them and how they’ve treated Supernatural back when they showed only a few episodes of Season 4 then made us wait 4-5 mths for the rest of the season, since then I’ve bought the seasons from the US, which are actually cheaper than buying it in Oz. Plus, the US have it on DVD before the seasons even finshed here in Oz.

Since Supernatural was the only show I watched on TV, I now don’t watch anything on 10.

  18. I can understand why they are doing this. There just aren’t enough Supernatural fans to keep Ten happy.

I’m 100% sure that Ten’s new general entertainment channel will have a permanent timeslot for Supernatural.

  19. What about using Friday night to play Supernatural, The Cleveland Show, Futurama and The Simpsons. Put Simpsons and Futurama from 7:30pm, double Supernatural from 8:30pm then Clevenland Show from 10:30 to 11. News and Sport at 11 and Letterman at 12. TEN would end up with either the same rating it has now or increased.

  20. @Craig – Ok so the tv stations don’t get a cut of the dvd sales etc. But am I correct that if the station owns the screening rights in Australia, and are withholding it, it can’t be released on dvd/iTunes here?

David – It seems like alot of shows aren’t released on dvd in Australia until they have been screened on TV. Burn Notice being one example. Is that how it works?
