Australia’s Got Talent outplays MasterChef

I see you Matt Preston and I raise you one piano-playing child protege....Seven's talent show beat TEN's cooking show last night.

I see you Matt Preston and I raise you one piano-playing child protege….

These are the moves that TV execs will be mulling today after Australia’s Got Talent beat MasterChef Australia last night.

Seven’s talent show pulled an impressive 1.5m viewers for its first semi final, beating TEN’s cooking show on 1.46m and Nine’s Top Gear with 1.27m. Having watched its factuals lose to the culinary juggernaut it actually managed to beat it with a little showbiz.

The fact that Seven’s show scored a higher average across its 90 minutes against the 30 minute cook-off is even more significant. This year Seven had hoped to kick the show up a notch and it has succeeded in doing so, including with less pre-production time to find its annual contestants.

Both shows are produced by FremantleMedia Australia which is a good return for the company so long as one show doesn’t wind up helping to kill off another. Whether the ‘re-plating scandal’ has contributed to MasterChef‘s defeat is still unclear.

Melbourne remained the strongest market for both shows.

Seven won the night with its news / current affair hour also doing good business. There was, however, a significant drop from Talent to Grey’s Anatomy, which had to settle for 953,000.

TEN still did good business with NCIS (1.42m), Bondi Rescue (1.32m). But Neighbours was under 600,000. TEN will soon be forced to address its 6pm lead-in with the same vigour it brought to 7pm.

On Nine Survivor was 971,000.

ABC2’s Dirty Jobs ranked an impressive 199,000.

  1. Anything is better than masterbore. I watched a bit of AGT, that 15 year old kid has certainly got some talent.

As for koverstreets comments, totally dismiss them, demos mean nothing in a country this size (except for the perenial loser channel and its fans that is).

7pm’s ratings are so false, as many shows are that have huge lead ins or huge lead outs. I would think greys figures are around 100k over done and 7pm’s a good 150-200k. I’m sure that will be proven when both shows lose there lead in and lead out (respectively).

Just a comment about Merlin also, we turned off 20 minutes into it on sunday, could not face another masterbore commercial. No more watching that, will record and watch at a latter date, as we do with neighbors now also for the same reason.

  2. I think it had to do with Jonathon, and possibly having to select a piece of meat from a carcass – I switched the channel and didn’t come back to it until the end of the ep to see the result.

  3. Not a major fan of AGT, but at least a show which is more about being entertainment rather than losing weight or cooking got higher numbers at last.

  4. I watched AGT for the first time last night.. I would like to be disowned from Australia if that is our talent. The kid can definitely play piano but that was the only act worth rating… I was so glad that I had 24 to switch over to!

  5. Am I the only one who noticed that 7 were advertising AGT as the ‘Finale’? I reckon that these figures have been boosted by false advertising on behalf of 7. Also Masterchef certainly didn’t seem to appealing last night so I too like many others didn’t actually set the recorder but rather wait till next ep.

  6. Probably Johnathan and Donna Hay. He is one contestant that seems to be the eliminator, when it comes to team challenges and Donna hay is one who might not fair well with some poeple. Could also be some people who suggests that AGT is a better view than MC. And then again some people might be turned off by the ‘Re-plating thing’.

  7. the celeb chef cookoff is clearly the most boring night of the week as it is a 30min show and too much editing is done. also all 3 of the cookoffs have been a no-contest with the contestant having no chance. even the judges have been saying that based on yesterdays article. they need to add some form of twist to handicap the celeb chef as a 15min head start is not effective.

  8. It could have something to do with the Re-plategate, however, it could also be that some episodes aren’t worth viewing, such as the celebrity chef challenges and masterclass. If MasterChef’s ratings tonight are lower, it could signify that MC is beginning to lose its prominence.

  9. AGT beat MC… la la la la… that just made my day…… cant watch those judges on MC anymore… at least they are smiling on the cover of their magazine, more than they do on that show… they shouldnt take themselves so seriously..

  10. shame that agnt beat MC MC is so much better than agnt

if ten made MC 60 minute episodes it may have helped personally i think 30 minute episodes are to short i thought that same with BB and TBL

i actually went and saw camp biggest loser last weekend

  11. I watch AGT, but what was with the audio during the first performance. The sound of the audience was so load it drew attention from the first performance. It was great to see the production team put some effort into the acts, with the lighting and the extra props really making AGT a top notch watch.

I think it has more to do with the fact that no one wanted to see a Jonathon-filled ep of Masterchef
    ]

That was the reason I didn’t watch MC

  13. jason, I’m with you! I wouldn’t be watching it because Mr Beckala likes Top Gear, but I usually record. Once I saw him on the ad for Masterchef, I immediately deleted the timer entry to record and re-set it for next week!!

  14. AGT almost ran for 2 hours (finishing at 9:13 here in Syd) so Greys is now basically a 9:30 show which makes its figures semi respectable.

Given the success of AGT I can see Seven trying to go ahead with The X Factor for later in the year.

  15. i don’t think it’s that significant that agnt beat master chef. master chef went half an hour and the agnt went an hour 40 minutes. 7 might thinks that’s a big win, but the public and master chef fans won’t

  16. Choosing between Australia’s Got Talent or MasterChef – it’s like being asked if you’d like to be stoned or whipped to death!
