ELEVEN to launch in early 2011

Updated: Neighbours, Dexter, Futurama, Supernatural, Stargate, Smallville, Nurse Jackie, 90210 are all coming to ELEVEN -and more News on TEN.

TEN has confirmed it will launch its new digital multichannel, ELEVEN early next year.

The new SD channel promises ‘fun and bold programming with particular appeal to the distinctly youthful market.’

It will air all-new episodes of Futurama, The Cleveland Show, Supernatural, Stargate, Dexter, Smallville, The Office, Nurse Jackie, 90210 and more.

It will also be the free-to-air home of the iconic The Simpsons.

Neighbours will also move to ELEVEN leaving question marks about the Network’s plans for local content on TEN. It will remain at 6:30pm weeknights.

Chief programming officer David Mott said: “Neighbours is an important and cherished member of the Network Ten family.

“We believe Neighbours is perfectly suited to ELEVEN’s audience strategy and will find a successful and enduring home on ELEVEN. We will round out the first 25 years with a bang, and give Australia’s most successful drama a new home to keep it vibrant in the schedule for the next 25.”

FremantleMedia Australia CEO, Ian Hogg said: “Just as Neighbours forged new territory for TEN in 1986, so we will again for ELEVEN in 2011. We are very proud of the faith being placed in Neighbours and the key role we will be playing in ELEVEN’s launch and line-up. Our storyline plans for 2011 are both bold and dramatic. Neighbours fans have much to look forward to for many years to come.”

Shifting Neighbours and The Simpsons signals changes for TEN’s early evening line-up. Following from News at Five bulletins, TEN will introduce a new half-hour national news-based program at 6.00 pm weeknights targeting viewers seeking a smarter, more informed, considered and insightful approach to the stories, issues, events and news-makers of the day.

Then at 6.30pm weeknights and at 6.00pm weekends, TEN will present a half-hour locally-presented and produced news service in all markets, focussing on the key issues in each State.

ELEVEN will also draw upon more than 70,000 hours of content from CBS’s library, including Everybody Loves Raymond, Sex and the City, JAG, Frasier, Judging Amy, Happy Days and MacGyver, to name a few.

In addition, Network Ten Pty Limited and CBS Studios International announced the proposed formation of a joint venture, ElevenCo Pty Limited (ElevenCo), which will provide content to ELEVEN. Network Ten will hold 66 2/3 per cent equity in ElevenCo, with CBS Studios Inc. holding a 33 1/3 per cent share.

As part of the arrangement to form the proposed joint venture, CBS has agreed to extend its existing long-term output deal with Network TEN.

CEO Grant Blackley said: “CBS Studios is a leading producer of quality programming for the global marketplace. In addition to its successful pipeline of content to the CBS network, which has been the lead network in the US for the last 8 out of 10 years, CBS produces content for the youth-targeted network, the CW. Our established output deal with CBS has been long and fruitful, delivering hits such as NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Rules of Engagement, Medium, The Good Wife and the much-anticipated Hawaii Five-0 to Australian audiences.”

“Importantly, the joint venture will ensure long term continuity of this prolific US content pipeline, underpinning the sustainability of ELEVEN and also delivering continued supply of high quality international programming for TEN.

“ELEVEN will deliver a distinct destination for Australian consumers and advertisers. The channel’s ‘distinctly youthful’ focus will be well suited to fostering a strong level of online community and social media engagement, and the format will provide opportunities for a high level of sponsor integration – such as segment and program hostings – delivered in ways that will resonate with ELEVEN’s audience,” Mr Blackley said.

ELEVEN will replace ONE SD.

A week ago Seven announced its new digital channel 7mate would launch in late September.

  1. Anyone who questions why there are no big local productions slated for multi-channels displays a very poor understanding of network business models. There is no way a network is going to splurge $800,000 on a local drama with a maximum
potential audience of 200k. Multi-channels are built on output deals, cheap syndicated series and paid local content. 11 like Go! before it looks like a clever, distinct and economical brand.

  2. I seem to recall people shunning the logo of GO!, but it all comes down to the idents for the channel. Idents can make even the worst logos look good. In saying that; the worst idents can make nice logo’s look bad as well. But who cares, the logo is nice and simple and purple works considering TEN is mainly blue.

Plus everyone mentioning Big Brother being on the channel; I agree that it’s expensive, but hopefully Eleven will free up room on TEN for the show to return. But not for a few years, please!

  3. I love the logo but I seem to remember Ten previously saying that the channel will have a unique/origin name. Looks like they’ve ditched that, it’s still better than “10mate”.

It looks like a great lineup of shows and I’m glad they’re keeping the Simpsons but how exactly are shows like Macguyver, Happy Days and The Love Boat ‘distinctly youthful’?

What I would like to see are Letterman and Craig Ferguson and some anime including old sentimental favourites like the original Pokemon and new shows like Naruto, Code Geass, etc. Maybe even the return of Cheez TV? I think with this new channel, Ten could once again provide a great kids lineup.

  4. What do they have against Australian shows ?
    The CBS library ??
What about the Crawfords or Grundys or Southern Star libraries ? !!
The channel still has something missing !!

  5. Three back to back news bulletins‽ Have Ten gone crazy? And I thought the original plan of 90 minute news was overkill. There are so many reasons why this won’t work and I’m not going to burden myself by listing them. What happened to the Jennifer Byrne show, that could have worked and I was looking forward to seeing how it would compare to 7 and 9’s “offerings” in that timeslot.

11’s logo looks nothing like E4’s. The only thing they have in common is the colour purple, and hundreds of logos have that. I don’t know why people are treating it as such a big issue.

  6. Oops what I meant to say before is with no ONE SD I’ll need the HD STB to record the F1 live and WRC or any other sport I want…

It’s not listed but David can we assume the rest of Swingtown will likely make an appearance on 11 at some point?

  7. So Get Smart and Hogan’s Heroes will soon be dropped by Go! when they move to 11. I used to enjoy watching Get Smart when it was on at 7pm. Hope 11 gives it a decent timeslot. It may be old but its still good.

  8. I’m guessing the 6pm in depth News Show will be the rumoured Jennifer Byrne one, if George Negus joined her it would be a big big thing to happen and worth watching (given there 7pm Project connection), if in depth ends up having Steve Price or anyone like that, then urgh I ain’t watching.

  9. Not much there I haven’t seen, else where. Shame Letterman will make the move, it’s means I’ll at least have to buy a HD STB to record the show, pity they haven’t included Craig Ferguson to follow Dave if they are making this move.

  10. I’m glad they haven’t done a ‘7’ and called it 10Two, or 10’insert name’. 11 is a great name and the logo isn’t too bad.

I wonder how long Ten News 24 will last though (I say that because they’ll be having news from 5pm-730pm), I reckon they’ll race back to the simpsons, it seems to be the perfect alternative.

I’m a bit disappointed that we won’t see new futurama or CleveLand until next year though.

  11. ffs, how many times does this need to be explained to people. Each channel can only have ONE high definition channel. There is not enough bandwidth for two HD channels and an SD channel.

Since Channel Ten already have an HD channel (ie, ONE HD), then 11 will have to be an SD channel.

    For god’s sake people, Learn.

  12. I wouldn’t write Ten’s 6:30pm state news bulletins of yet because it is an alternative to 7 and 9 current affair programs and everyone is home by 6pm to watch 7 News or 9 and that’s why ABC News rates 1 million each night.
