Denton says Logies are stuck in the past

Bert and Graham were great says Andrew Denton, but when is Aussie TV going to pass the torch?

Former Logies and Enough Rope presenter Andrew Denton has labelled the Logie Awards as continually living in the past.

Denton told media and marketing website Mumbrella, “With due respect to the late and the living, Graham Kennedy and Bert Newton, I’m sick to f***ing death of hearing them eulogised every Logies.

“They were 30 years ago. They were great. We’ve said they were great every year for 30 years. We’ve had so much fantastic talent since then. When are we going to pass the torch?”

  1. And who told Denton he is on the cutting edge of comedy? Bert has wit. The laughs he gets are genuine laughs. Unlike Denton. When ever he is front of a audience, who aren’t latte drinking snobs. All he seems to get then are pity laughs. Someone should tell him, envy is a bad trait.

  2. Why doesn’t the industry vote for these awards…makes them more official rather than the public just voting for who they like…it’s a popularity contest rather than an award for great ability in acting

  3. It’s hypocritical for people in the industry to bag out the Logies and then be recalcitrant about taking part in them. It’s much easier to tweet funny stuff from under the table than it is to get up there and have a go in front of your peers and a television audience.

  4. I think the whole idea of these TV Awards shows should be scrapped. None of these actors really deserve to get awards for just doing a pretty basic job.
They get paid, sometimes too much for what they really do.
All this does is to hype them up so they think they are more special than anybody else.
Really, do they actually do anything worthy of these awards?
Agree or disagree, that is your choice.

  5. I think the Logies should celebrate the old and new.
It’s important that the younger generation are aware of our TV heritage, but I tend to agree with Andrew that it’s time to move on from Bert and Graham.

  6. Well why doesn’t Denton put his money where his mouth Is , he should put his hand up to host again and get his buddys from The Chaser to produce the show .

  7. I actually beg to differ with Denton’s comments and not sure why this has come up right now? I have long been a fervent critic of the Logies, have watched them since 1977. I have worked on programs that have been nominated, and have watched purely as an observer as well as an industry member. They need reworking, but to overarch a critique that they are living in the past i cannot agree with. They try each year it seems a new host in recent times: shared hosts, comedians, the quintessential host – Bert. For years, people said bring back bert, bring back Bert! Whatever the Logies do, they are criticised – Gretel, Harmer, Micallef, Newton – sure Denton got praise, but then he bowed out. For me, it is the narrow mix of categories and compulsion to bring out international stars that irks me. We have a great number of dramas of all sorts and yet we have just 2 categories of peer judged acting – what about the supporting actors? New talent – Matt Preston!!!! An overhaul of categories is one thing. An overhaul of the telecast itself is another. Why shouldn’t we honour our history and legends, along with the new, the cutting edge and the breakthrough talents. It is never going to please all people.

  8. Very sad reading negative comments about our past masters. The days of the Graham Kennedys & Don Lanes & Bert Newton’s are our golden days.No one compares to these people or even come close. The only male host i get excited about is Shaun Micallef. He has that something special.Andrew Denton is also a major talent & has been part of many wonderful programs over the years.I am fed up with awards shows in general being a stand up comedy routine for everyone. While comedyshould be a part of the show, does it have to be the whole thing? Why can’t it go the other way & be a little classy, something it certainly has not been for many years.
