ONE to relaunch with entertainment in May

ONE will relaunch on May 8th with more drama, factual and movies in HD but retain its premium sports as it chases males aged 25-54.

TEN has confirmed it will relaunch ONE in May with more entertainment.

The sports-channel will now include a mix of entertainment and sports aimed at males aged 25-54.

It will include a mix of premium sport plus additional drama, movies, and factual. Many will be in HD.

First run titles include Ricky Gervais’ An Idiot Abroad, Terriers, Lights Out, Breakout Kings, Everest.

It will also air Sons of Anarchy, new episodes of COPS, Airline, Long Way Round, plus shows that have already aired including Ice Road Truckers, Extreme Fishing with Robson Green

AFL, Moto GP and Formula One will remain on ONE.

The move follows the exit of sports boss David White and the failure of the channel to attract significant numbers on an on-going basis.

‘‘The bold, broad appeal of TEN along with the already proven performance of the distinctly youthful ELEVEN and now with the broader content offering for the male-skewed ONE positions us to capitalise on viewer and advertiser engagement,’’ chief programming officer David Mott said.

ONE has been trialling entertainment shows for many weeks and noticing an increase in its audience.

“We found that has already boosted our audience with a 27% share jump in those timeslots, so we know there is an appetite for this,” a TEN spokesperson told TV Tonight.

“Where we have things in full HD we will play them in full HD.”

Entertainment will air Monday – Fridays, with sport on weekends. ONE is aspiring to a 2.5% share with its new line-up.

TEN will also launch The Bolt Report, hosted by Andrew Bolt on May 8 on Sundays at 10am. Meet the Press will be move to 10.30am.

The announcements come on a day when TEN reported “unacceptable” half year results of
group earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) before Non-Recurring Items was $106.0 million, down 9.8 per cent on the prior corresponding period.

Interim CEO, Lachlan Murdoch said: “The half year results are not acceptable and
immediate action is already underway to address them. Disappointingly for TEN’s 1300 employees and 22,500 shareholders, these results do not demonstrate TEN’s underlying strengths and potential.”

“TEN is at a crucial juncture in its history. Free-to-air television is an excellent business with strong growth prospects. However, TEN has been under-delivering and this must change.”

“Importantly, this change has already begun.”

  1. As there is currently a significant legal dispute between The Board of Control for Cricket in India (which owns and controls the commercial rights in the Indian Premier League) and the company through which Network Ten secured the Australian broadcast rights, Network Ten has decided Not to broadcast the IPL.

The matter is currently before the Court in India so we will not be making any further comments at this time.

  2. That was my concern about the American sports, but if they don’t rate well, I gotta feeling that they’re going straight back to pay tv because of this re-launch!

  3. @roy4hire – what’s your source for SBS 3 “coming soon”? I don’t think they’ve got the $ to splash out on more content for another channel.

  4. It’s about time

I don’t see what’s wrong in having a sports channel that shows some drama content. There are so many films and tv series based on sports, they should be on ONE.

There also needs to be better cross promotion across TEN. When you watch 7 you get a promo with upcoming content on 7 as well as 7two. Ten should do the same, saying “you can catch all the action on ONE” during the sports News is not enough

  5. As long as they keep broadcasting netball games, this male will keep watching One. Why babes in mini-skirts is not more popular sport is a mystery I can’t understand.

  6. Cam, there is no SD ONE on channel 12.
The SD version of ONE (that used to be on ch 11) closed down when channel ELEVEN started.
The signal seen on ch 12 is a simply a redirection to ch 1 thus HD and not a separate channel.
Similarly ch 70 and 71 redirect to ch 7.

  7. With the Ratings figures for ONE HD that we see here on TV Tonight, are they bungled together with the SD ONE on Channel 12, or are they so low they don’t get recorded/reported by OzTAM.

    1. Cam, it’s up to the channel for simulcast shows, they pretty much have a choice either way. Generally speaking ONE shows that are separate from TEN are listed separately. Everything is recorded by OzTAM but I report data from Top 100.

  8. Does anyone know if there still going to show the NFL and the NBA? Because apart from the AFL thats all thats worth watching on ONEhd.
Also they should try and get 1 premier league game on a saturday night because the Serie A and the Bundesliga are so boring to watch. seriously who wants to watch Borussia Dortmund vs Monchengladbach.

  9. The problem with ONE HD was that it was launched at the wrong time. If they had launched it just before the analogue switchoff in 2012 or 2013 then it would be rating better then it currently is. Secondly the channel needed or needs more primtime content. Whether it is australian or from europe ie the EPL ONE HD needs it. The time difference from the states really hurts the channel, iam not saying that it doesnt hurt pay tv it does but on FTA it matters more.
Thats where the problem was or is. Thirdly the launch of movies on it clearly didnt work and in my opinion it made the channel worse. I think the new direction is interesting but not bold at all. I was watching lateline business on ABC and the interim chief executive Lachlan Murdoch said that there aim is to have be the bold fresh exciting channel it used to be. Well in my opinion thats what ten still is its just that they have been a victim of bad timing thats all. For those of you who are saying that the content they purchased is wrong or bad then i have to say thats simply not true. The network needed as many sports to fill its channel and since all the primtime content was already snapped up well they had to go for the less atractive content. personally iam happy that the NBL is on. As far as the NBL is concerned they must be sweating over this big time, because Ten have a contract for 5 years and the coverage of games will increase from 2 or 3 to 5 at the last year of the contract, thats if they get there. ps iam male in the targeted demo and i dont like Ice Road truckers or any of that documentary style shows which are airing on 7mate or now on ONE HD. i know what i want and i dont want that.

  10. “Where we have things in full HD we will play them in full HD.”

1080i resolution is not full HD. That’s just misleading. However, it is good to see ONE HD going in a different direction. There’s no success in showing many sporting events that will only attract niche audiences.

  11. I sure hope they keep baseball during the week, One shows better games than Foxtel. Fox Sports seem to always take the cheapest games which is why they keep showing Detroit, like they are this morning.

  12. @ Bass & Pheonix727. Fox8 owns practically all the rights to WWE: RAW, SmackDown, NXT, Superstars, Vintage Collection and in the last week they’ve added Tough Enough as well. I think that just leaves AM RAW that could be purchased but I’m not sure WWE distributes it internationally. Alternatively, Fox8 has let their contract with TNA run out so One could pursue the rights to TNA Impact.

  13. I am sure somewhere on this site there are comment by me, or under the old name I used to post to. Saying how One was a huge mistake and would fail if it stayed sports only.

  14. Very disappointing that it has come to this. Ten needed to heavily invest in live sport for the channel to work, and instead they just tried to go for cheap deals or sports that no-one else wanted.

  15. Lets face it, ONEHD never had what it needed to succeed – big name sports events on a regular basis, so it only attracted die-hard sports fans, which is obviously not a big market.
I think a compromise is a great idea – keep showing mostly sport, but entertainment shows around it.
The Ten network is easily my most watched network, I only wish they could get the ratings they deserve, because they have more respect for their viewers (starting most shows on time), and programming that is a little more risky and innovative, rather than a rehash of what’s been done before.

Looking forward to the new ONEHD!

  16. Didn’t TEN/OneHD sign a 3-year agreement to broadcast the NBL? I wonder what impact this decision will have on that agreement?
Also I hope that the NBA and NFL continue to be shown…whether it be live or delayed telecasts.

  17. I watch ONE for Wrestling UFC and Nascar, TNA got dumped in favour of WWE crap, UFC I haven’t seen for weeks, so I hope at least Nascar stays!

  18. The thing with Murdock and Packer is yes they want to protect their Foxtel investment, but they’d also want to greatly increase the value of their Ten share holdings, which so far hasn’t happened. Shows like Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five 0 haven’t been the hits Ten were hoping.

  19. It was expected. I won’t be too fussed as long as they don’t downgrade their current motorsport commitments. Will be watching Sons of Anarchy and An Idiot Abroad and will check a couple of the others out.
