2013 Logie Awards: It’s Asher!

Asher Keddie has won the Gold Logie for 2013.

It was Keddie’s third nomination for TV’s top award.

The Offspring star snatched glory from Adam Hills, Carrie Bickmore, Hamish Blake, Andy Lee and Steve Peacocke.

She also scored a Silver Logie as Most Popular Actress.

Keddie was overwhelmed by the win and struggled to express her gratitude.

“I think this is for a body of work?” she asked.

“It’s not lost on me just how fortunate I am to have such generous, supportive people around me, including the wonderful Offspring family.

“I’m absolutely thrilled and so grateful and it’s such a pleasure to be working on such a wonderful Australian drama.”

Keddie continues Logie’s love affair with golden girls including Rebecca Gibney, Lisa McCune, Kate Ritchie and Georgie Parker.

But the win from the delayed broadcast was leaked by News Limited for the second year in a row.

Offspring is expected to return in May.

  1. David – we get the point…! You’re on the “Joel Madden shouldn’t have won or been nominated” side 🙂 As I said a few posts down, if TV Week isn’t happy with the outcome, then they need to change the rules, or Ricky Martin will be up there next year. I still maintain that if it had been Keith Urban up there, it wouldn’t have been as big of an issue (even though he and Joel are in similar situations except for their place of birth).

  2. Sorry – I should have said, “She’s still considered to be eligible in years in which she appears on Australian TV”. People complained very loudly about Kate Ritchie’s last Gold nomination, since she’d only appeared on air for eight weeks that year. Dannii Minogue doesn’t live in Australia when she’s not working on Australian TV, but would people have complained if she’d been nominated for AGT?

    1. Rachel Griffiths may spend half her time or more in the US, Guy Pearce sure does, but I don’t see anybody begrudging an Aussie actor being recognised for a performance on Aussie TV. What we’re talking about is New Talent, designed to recognise emerging local talent. If the rule were adjusted to Australian / Australian resident it would solve this. Will Dawn French or Ricky Martin take these out next year?

  3. This is where the waters are muddied. David Campbell has an existing fan base outside television, so it could be argued that he has an unfair advantage, too. The same goes for Clare Bowditch. She’s hardly an “emerging talent” in general, although she’s achieving success in a field that is completely new for her. Kylie Minogue hasn’t lived in Australia since the late 80s, yet she’s eligible for everything. Ditto Guy Pearce (I don’t think he’s lived here since the early 90s). If TV Week aren’t happy about Joel winning, they’d better change the rules for next year, because Ricky will be in with a shot otherwise. Would people have been happier if it had been Keith Urban instead of Joel (even though he hasn’t lived here for many, many years)?

  4. JD: Should Australian actors be deemed ineligible for the Emmys, even when they work on shows produced in the US? Don Lane was brought to Australia directly from the US to host his own TV Show, and won multiple Logies. For a time, he was the most popular personality on Australian television – people didn’t care where he came from, they just enjoyed watching him. What’s so different about Joel? If people want non-Australians banned from The Logies, then non-Americans (including Canadians) should be banned from The Emmys. Oh, and let’s ban Rebecca Gibney from The Logies, too. She’s a Kiwi, not an Aussie! Good grief….

    1. Don Lane lived and worked in Australia, not the same thing. New Talent is there to recognise emerging actors, presenters etc. and was created before reality show had fly-in / fly-out music stars with big Facebook fan bases.

New Talent rules specify first major appearance in a series (ie more than 2 eps for actor). David Campbell has been a guest on DWTS and It Take Two but not fronted an FTA series before. He did front a Foxtel series.

  5. Absolute joke – these are Australian Awards …Joel Madden should not have even been eligible (he was on our screens for about 12 weeks) total joke and a kick in the face to all australian talent!!!

  6. Congrats to Asher and the whole cast. Offspring is a great drama.
Hope 10 put it in their schedule soon, I assume after Murder.
While others doubt she is the most popular? She won the Logie, so she is in that context! I doubted the previous winners from 9, but believe this win!

  7. I still find it fascinating that Asher Keddie is a 4 time Logie winner, but has never won a peer voted prize here. She should have been included in the Outstanding Actress category this year.

  8. Great, really happy she won. And I think ch 10 even beat 7 for logie wins & even ch 2 did too, so take that ch 7!!!!! I didn’t mind 9 winning so many, 7 have dominated for years and it’s about time 9 did again.

People were complaining about ch 9’s promos, but it they had been held on 7 or 10 they would have been doing the exact same thing.

I agree, they should start it earlier and telecast it live. I actually thought it was live till someone said it wasn’t. I know it used to be live. When did they stop doing that? They used to start at 7.30 and move 60 mins to 6.30, but now with The Voice being on before it puts it back, then that ran late.

  9. Her speech was wonderful she was truly great full all though I think Carrie Bickmore or Adam Hills would be more popular, but in the end it comes down to who votes.

  10. Congrats to Asher. so happy she won. I was hoping Adam Hills would have got it. I was very surprised Anthony Hayes won Most Outstanding Actor, yes he put in a good performance, I think that the amount of brilliant acting that Lachy Hulme put in last year was more deserving. Please channel 9, next year the logies early and finish the logies early. Adam Hills or Dave Hughes needs to host the logies next year or maybe the 2 of them together.

  11. They really need to scrap the 40-minute delay. Why not go for a 5-minute delay to allow for censoring etc.? Making people wait until 12:20am to find out the Gold Logie winner is beyond ludicrous. While I don’t believe that Asher Keddie is Australia’s most popular television personality, I was impressed by how humble she was in her speech.

  12. Congrats to Asher, very deserving. Ugh! to so many 9 programmes winning. Just goes to show that if you are desperate enough to screen a “Vote for…” commercial every ad break it will get stuck in people’s heads like a one hit wonder.
